Potential Anglican Church joining Catholic Church ?

i think the “Journey Home” on EWTN last week featured an ex Anglican minister named Doctor William (Audi ??).

He spoke about a few parishes who previously joined “the Catholic Church” in England but thought that the local Catholic Church wasn’t too keen on it and disbanded the churches.

The validity of changing to allow women ordinations seemed to be a current issue of disagreement. He thought that once they allowed women bishops that can ordain priests that would be the trigger for large numbers to move across.

He hinted (me reading between the lines) that this time around ‘high church’ Anglicans were in direct talks with the vatican to establish an Anglican rite instead of the previously just joining the local “Catholic” system.

I saw EWTN too and I also heard on the radio the same…This time they will go directly through Rome because unfortunately our own Bishops are too political instead of pastoral at times it seems. Unfortunately I wish that wasn’t the historical truth.

Boy, I wish we could find a way to differentiate between using the term “Rite” to refer to a specific liturgy vs “Rite” meaning a sui juris Church.

There already is a way. “Rite” means liturgy, and “sui juris Church” means a Church with her own liturgical and spiritual patrimony in communion witn the Roman Church.

Is my sincere hope they do not"

God’s peace

Blessings
Lilyflower,
I’m curious why you would say this. If this small group of Anglicans confess to believe the doctrine of the Catholic Church, and accept the Pope as the Leader of the Church, infallible in doctrine and morals, how would that be different than your profile statement on religion thus:
Orthodox-Catholic: when Rome has spoken, the case is closed.
?
One would think Catholics would rejoice in this mass “coming home”.

Right, but most folks don’t use the technical latin “sui juris”. In common parlance they refer to the “Latin Rite” or the “Byzantine Rite” when they mean the Latin Church or the Byzantine Church. I was just pointing out the confusion that can arise when having discussions of inter-Church liturgics or other such things

Right!😉 I was thinking Rite I, Rite II of the Holy Eucharist. I am a Rite II person and my husband perfers Rite I.😃

Willaim Oddie, former CoE priest.

The issues of females in collars or miters, while applicable to TEC or CoE, does not apply to the TAC or any other traditionalist Anglican jurisdiction. It was precisely for reasons such as those that the traditionalist Anglicans separated from the official Anglican Communion in the first place, beginning around 30 years ago. There are no females in sacerdotal garments in the TAC.

There is always expectation/hope that something is about to cause a mass exodus from the Anglican Church to the RCC. Cardinal Vaughan guaranteed Leo XIII that it would occur after
*Apostolicae Cuare * was isssued. It didn’t. And when the CoE first started putting collars on females, the moderately large number of orthodox Anglo-Catholic-inclined CoE priests who wanted to escape to Rome were told to make their individual submissions, no larger groups need apply. Generally (esp. in Great Britain), the RCC hierarchy is not fond of anything more than individual submissions. The Pastoral Provision, at least availble in the US, was specifically not made operative in GB.

Anglicans making individual conversions is wonderful and reason to celebrate. But conversion ‘en-masse’, I regret I am very cinical because we have seen it all before.😦

The REAL reason behind this I suspect is more to do with protestations in what is happening within the Anglican communion than a genuine desire to embrace Catholicism. That is not in my view a good enough reason to accept them. In short: becoming Catholic out of protest is not genuine and an insult to the authentic Church of Christ.

Such conversions rarely last. At the next whim they will probably move on.

I just do not believe that they will accept all things Catholic without expecting some sort of special concessions. Now sorry but that is just not Catholic! 🙂

Vocatio & Chris Molter:

The Anglican Use is most precisely a “Pastoral Provision” allowed by Local Ordinaries by request and under the Authority of Pope John Paul II and renewed by Pope Benedict XVI. So far, fewer than a dozen parishes have taken advantage of this in fewer than 7 Dioceses and only in the USA. Part of the reason for this (I’ve been told) has been the reluctance of Local Ordinaries to allow the Anglican Use in their Jurisdictions.

IN THE NEWS - CATHOLIC NEWS
**TAC Appeal for Unity sent to the Vatican

**10th May 2008
From the Primate of the
Traditional Anglican Communion
*This letter was used earlier this year in an Appeal to both our own Traditional Anglican Communion people and Roman Catholic people in several countries who have shown interest in helping us. It has since been published in other places, although seemingly not in full. It contains brief quotations from the Traditional Anglican Communion’s letter to the Holy See (the original letter runs to some eleven pages). The Traditional Anglican Communion will not be releasing the full text until the response of the Holy See has been received, in accordance with a commitment given by the three delegates who handed the letter to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The Primate has released this text in order to obviate any confusion arising from its partial distribution. He has also expressed the hope that the last page, where he appeals for support, might receive as much attention as the rest.

We’ve realized that many of the problems with Anglicanism and with PECUSA had to do with the Absence of Clear Authority. You’ll see that once you read the excerpts of the letter given to the Vatican (the rest of the letter has been withheld at the Vatican’s request). The Vatican has spent 16 years working on our problems of Authority. I got to see the fruits up close and personal a couple of years ago when we had to deal with a Rector who was guilty of misconduct and who refused to submit to authority or repent.

Unlike in PECUSA (now the TEC), most of the Anglican Communion (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) or even in the Anglican Continuum, Bishop “CAG” had the authority to “relieve the Rector of his position” once he decided that’s what needed to be done.

I think you’ll agree that’s an improvement over what you see in the Anglican Communion. and esp. over the situation in TEC.

Please keep us, and this, in your prayers,

Your Brother in Christ, Michael

It would be truly wonderful if our seperated brethren were coming home. It would indeed be occasion to celebrate and I for one would be most jubilant. But it has to be for reasons of personal conviction, not out of protestation at what is happening elsewhere within Anglicanism.

Blessings and peace.

Lilyflower, since when did you start reading people’s hearts and minds? I thought that was God’s Department! And, What “en Masse conversions” are you talking about? Or, Have you forgotten that the Early Church and the Early days of the Church’s expansion in the New World after the Vision of the Virgin of Guadalupe were filled with “en masse conversions”?

The TAC has been negotiating with the Vatican for over 16 years, and both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI have been intimately involved in the negotiations. Have you heard about any of that?

In case you wanted to know, the Holy Father has no less than 16 churches in union with him, many of whom are former Orthodox Churches brought into communion with the Catholic Church under exactly the same conditions you’re criticizing now.

Take a look at the list on this link:

I strongly urge you to look into the history of how most of these were received into communion with the Catholic Church and the Holy See - You’ll find out that our circumstances are little different from theirs, and that you would have cut them off from the grace of God just as you are trying to cut us off from the grace of God.

As I said, We’ve been negotiating with the Vatican for over 16 years, and both Pope John Paul II and His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI have been intimately involved in the negotiations, and they’ve both disagreed with your assessment of the leadership and members of the TAC.

I believe you would do well to heed Our Lord’s warning to the Pharisees:

“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither enter yourselves, nor allow those who would enter to go in.”
Matt. 23:13 RSV

Please don’t press what you’ve been saying - All you can do is contradict your own Pope and sound like a Pharisee as you do so. All you can do is try to shut the door God Himself, through His Popes, has opened. If you and others like you succeed in doing that, it will be a great triumph for the Devil, the Father of Lies and the Adversary of the Brethren.

I beg you not to aid in such an evil enterprise.

Shlomo Michael!

Great to hear that you are anxiously and hopeful for reunion. Praise be to Jesus Christ!

Do you know what would become of the married bishops in the TAC? I had read somewhere that they would be willing to step down from their positions and be “downgraded” (for lack of a better term) to priests.

I think it would do wonders ecumenically if the Patriarchate of Rome granted the TAC sui iuris status. They would still be under the umbrella of the Latin tradition, but making them Latin Catholics en masse as some Latin Catholics would like it could have severe implications in the future, espcially for ecumenical relations with the Apostolic Churches.

Just my :twocents: on the matter.

I hear Anglicans protesting about what is happening within the Anglican communion and wanting to proetst by becoming Roman Catholic to hurt Anglicanism where it really hurts.

Brother Andrew:

I’ve heard nothing about any “Downgrading” - The Bishops of the TAC passed a resolution stating that they voluntarily step down if that was needed to allow for union between the TAC and the Holy Pontiff. Bot Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI have refused to accept the resignations.

The seem to believe it’s important not to make changes unless they’re absolutely necessary. That’s probably why Archbishop Hepworth said the Vatican had expressed a willingness to accept the married Episcopate on a temporary basis until we could ordain enough celibate priests to begin applying Eastern (Catholic/Orthodox) Discipline.

I agree that it would as well - There are a lot of “Anglican Catholics” who would have joined the Roman Catholic Church during the last 30 years except for the banal liturgy and lack of respect for our Lord’s Body and Blood in the RCC in the prosperous West during the last 35-38 years.

I’ve listed the benefits to the Catholic Church elsewhere, along with how many Anglicans will come on over from the soon to be “near-defunct” (most of the faithful will simply leave) Anglican Communion. The 300,000-350,000 members of the TAC (out of a worldwide membership of 500,000) who’ll actually “Swim the Tiber” will make the “Anglican Catholic Church” (Name proposed by member of the Vatican) one of the three largest *Sui Iuris *Churches in union with His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI and in communion with the other Churches of the Catholic Church. The 3 to 5 million Anglican Catholics who would then join the Anglican Catholic Church over the next 4 or 5 years would make it the 2nd largest Church in union with His Holiness (The Roman Catholic Church being the largest).

And, The Orthodox are watching this with interest… They do want to see how the TAC is accepted by the members and hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church.

Shlomo, Michael!

My apologies for the use of the word “downgrade.” At the time I could not think of another appropriate word. Are there monasteries within the TAC? Traditionally, in the Eastern Churches the Bishops are chosen from amongst the monks. Do you think that would be a possibility? I do agree that it would be best for the Bishops to retain their offices until another course of action is deemed appropriate.

I would love to see the Anglican Catholic Church gain sui iuris status. To me, it would not make sense any other way. However, if they are given sui iuris status, do you think they could be given Patriarchal status as well? That would sound so cool: Anglican Catholic Patriarch SO and SO!👍

Praying for the will of God in this situation.

Brother Michael, I have read the passages. My OWN rule for life is 1Jn 17. I often fall short but that is the ideal, reiterated in Jn 15:17. I assure you I would welcome any brother or sister into ‘coming home’ providing they are doing so out of genuine conversion regardless of what is happening elsewhere within Anglicanism.

I would ask a brother and sister one question: ‘If Anglicanism were to embrace the priniciples you hold dear, would you still be converting to Catholicism?’ If the answer is ‘no’ then I think Mother Church should be cautious but if the answer is an inequivocal ‘yes’ then I say ‘let’s kill the fattened calf proclaim a season of festival and let us celebrate!’

The following link is Geographically revealing, but this parish is 2 blocks from my house. Now GOOGLE EARTH it and tell me which Church is directly diagaonally across the street from it. That is the Church that began my journey back home to the Catholic Church. Long story. I thought about becoming Anglican or Episcopalian at first. Then I learned more. So I wanted to become Orthodox but my wife stuck to Catholciism…then I wanted to become Eastern Catholic, but my wife continued RCIA. And then I realized, I’m where God wants me to be Latin Catholic.

Traditional Ang, Harpazo, et al.,

I wouldn’t complain the slightest bit if an Anglican-Rite sui iuris Catholic Church were created.

But having said that, I skeptical about whether that will actually happen.

The Pope is still considered “Patriarch of the West”, even if that title is no longer in the Annuario Pontificio. Having a second sui iuris church in the West is certainly possible but … as I say, I’m a little skeptical.
