Love of money has never been one of my vices. That’s rare, but I try to make up for it with others. I really just don’t care about money and stuff. My wife has the problem and I tell her not to worry about what the rich people do or have. That’s about all you can do. Just get by the best you can. Learning to live without will help your kids in the long run.

I had a husband who kept us in poverty years ago. It was a huge drag. He, also, said he just wasn’t materialistic and made fun of people who worked hard to get ahead. After we split up he never paid child support, and instead of working hard kept hitting up his family. He felt entitled because they had more money than him. Now that his folks are gone he hits up our sons. 🤷

I haven’t been able to read through all the comments, but I would recommend checking craigslist if you are looking for items that are still in good shape but used. Check right after Christmas, when people that get new things are going to try to sell the previous version of something like a gaming system. Also check used CD and DVD stores. Most of them sell electronics at a deep discount and you can still find the new versions. I tried to sell a brand new ipod to a store like that one time (I already had an iphone so I didn’t really need it. My old ipod was ancient but it was affected by a recall so Apple sent me a brand new one to replace the recalled one!) I ended up not selling it to the store, but situations like mine happen where a person has a perfectly good item that they do not really need so they sell it and YOU can get the discount because it is second hand.

I try to buy as much as possible second hand. I like to let other people take the big depreciation hit. You can do this with all kinds of things (exceptions being soft furniture, mattresses, underwear, swimsuits, etc…you get the picture).

There are all kinds of things you can get at a deep discount if you scour thrift stores, classifieds, and similar things. It’s getting quite trendy due to the economy, too. You will find all kinds of blogs where people brag about their 2nd hand finds!

That must have been hard to live through. I think it is in my genetic makeup - and would have thought that this was true for most men - to want to be able to provide for their families.

God bless,
