PRATT: WHAT MEDIA WON’T TELL YOU ABOUT THE NEW ZEALAND MASSACRE

10:00 AM 03/19/2019 | OPINION

Erich Pratt | Gun Owners of America. Daily Caller

News of the New Zealand shooting brought the usual calls for gun control in the United States. And while the mainstream media is helping fuel the prejudice against gun rights, their greatest bias is in what they refuse to print.

True to form, here are at least three things the media will not tell you about New Zealand’s shooting.

First, New Zealand has far greater gun control than we have in the United States.

New Zealand requires gun-owner licensing, registration for certain guns, universal background checks and more.

Authorities will even investigate gun buyers by interviewing family members before issuing licenses. So-called “assault weapons” are legal, but heavily restricted.

Taken together, the country’s gun control far exceeds what we have in the United States. And yet their extreme restrictions did not stop a bad guy from using firearms to commit a heinous massacre last week.

The failure of gun control is not unique to New Zealand. Consider Venezuela . . .

. . . Second, the shooter broke off the attack only after being confronted with a weapon.

That’s right, a potential victim at the second mosque grabbed an unloaded shotgun and threw it at the shooter. This shattered his car window which presumably made him think that he was being fired upon. The killer sped off, and lives were undoubtedly saved. But few outlets have mentioned this.

Likewise, the mainstream media have steadfastly ignored the many legitimate examples of self-defense in this country where good guys use loaded guns to bring attacks to a halt.

For this reason, few people know that FBI reports on active shooters show several examples where armed civilians either stopped or prevented mass shootings in recent years.

These examples are just the tip of the iceberg. FBI “active shooter” reports show that when a gun owner is present, mass shootings are either prevented or mitigated 94 percent of the time.

But the mainstream media is silent . . .

. . . Criminal psychologists have begged the media to stop printing the pictures and names of mass murderers.

Why? Because subsequent investigations have shown that several shooters were specifically intending to commit their evil deeds, in part, using media coverage as way to become immortalized. . . .

A way to become immortalized.

That’s almost certainly WHY the New Zealand shooter felt compelled to invoke President Trump’s name, and why the Aurora shooter brought “Batman” and “Joker” into his crime for the same reasons.
. . . Another fact the media won’t tell you is that researchers in the British Journal of Criminology studied Australia’s crime rates and concluded the “gun buy-back and restrictive legislative changes had no influence on firearm homicide in Australia.”

And news outlets in that country have reported that police departments around the nation routinely fail to report all the crime statistics which, of course, produces the appearance of lower crime rates.

One thing is for sure. Given that New Zealand already registers semi-automatic firearms,
officials will now have a target list which they can turn into a gun confiscation list.

But just as gun confiscation failed to stop mass killings and mass shootings in Australia, it will most certainly not make the people any safer.

Just ask the people of Venezuela.
Bold mine.

.

Given that New Zealand already registers semi-automatic firearms,
officials will now have a target list which they can turn into a gun confiscation list.

And THIS is what it really is all about in the mind of many of the gun controllers.

Please just stop using the murder of 50 people to promote gun ideology

Please just stop using the murder of 50 people to promote gun ideology
Please just stop using analysing the murder of 50 people to promote the inability to dissect the problem of defenselessness in the public sphere.

If these people were allowed to defend themselves, there wouldn’t be the “murder of 50” here.

Is it “gun ideology” for YOU, when YOU need protection and help from the police?

Or is it only “gun ideology” if someone else
needs that level of force for protection?

Please just stop. This did not happen in your country. Promote your own gun ideology with examples , or not, from your country.

Mores, values, culture, nationalism is not the same for each country. So your arguments about gun ideology do not translate well with respect to other countries. You start mentioning gun law for New Zealand, and quite fail to mention any factors that might be relevant, or any culture that might see several small weapons and hunting supplies stores in very small towns in NZ. Ever been there at the start of the roar?

Please just stop.
I was just thinking about saying the same thing for your comment.

So if these people were allowed to protect themselves it wouldn’t have made a difference?

Or do you think that is ONLY true for Americans??

Like it or not, there is a global discussion going on here.

And it is for the better to discuss it.

It is a privilege that we at CAF are part of that global discussion.

Don’t take such ability for granted.

Good grief. The paranoia continues, and apparently the only solution is that every man, woman and child pack heat.

Cathoholic, LateranBasilica,

Just a friendly reminder, so we don’t lose an opportunity for a good discussion …

Conduct Rules CAF
  1. Messages posted to this board must be polite and free of personal attacks, threats, and incendiary, divisive, crude or sexually-explicit language.
  2. Messages should be short. Do not post lengthy replies (including replies that consist largely of quotes from an earlier message). Lengthy consecutive posts will be deleted.
  3. Do not view the discussion area as a vehicle for single-mindedly promoting an agenda.

This is HOW an argument with no standing needs to be framed.

Because leftist ideas that many people have imbibed, cannot compete in that idea comparison.

Here we have the fallacy of equivocation where my premise gets changed to "every man, woman and child ", and no reference to the article I cited.

This is the kind of discourse that we run into, when attempts to have a real discussion occur.

Niceatheist. I would suggest dissecting the article (not with straw men, but in actuality) making your point, and testing the ideas.

I’m all for it.

But I am not going to argue against the straw man set up here. If you want to discuss it, I am happy to. If you want to insist that is what I am saying (I’m not but if you want to insist on it) go ahead without my (name removed by moderator)ut.

I’d say having firefights between civilians and armed terrorists in confined spaces probably won’t reduce the body count significantly. But what do I know?

I’m not anti-gun, quite the opposite. I was raised around firearms and enjoy using them. But I’m not under any illusion that they can magically make mass shooters go away.

truthnlife.

That’s right truthnlife.

Nobody has leveled any “personal attacks” at least so far.

I’ll try to truncate my messages shorter. Guilty of being long winded at times.
Do not view the discussion area as a vehicle for single-mindedly promoting an agenda.
I agree.

Especially with the agenda of overturning our liberties in America.

But of course this issue right now, like it or not, is a global discussion.

Look. I agree with all your caveats here.

Thanks for the advice. I’d be interested to hear your (name removed by moderator)ut on the issue too.

Well read the article because that topic is addressed and linked to.

I am OK discussing this too. Let’s look at it.

Thanks for the invitation. I’m relatively new here, but been around long enough that I don’t really want to get involved in the conversations in this category, but just observe the interactions out of interest in sociological aspects of opinions on current events.

I think that the issue here isn’t gun control–it’s selective reporting by the media.

That’s really scary to me–censorship of facts. Decisions about public policy can’t be made without a full and accurate presentation of the facts.

Well stated Peeps.

(I love discussing issues on CAF. There is never a dull moment. Good people here. Absolutely the best forum by far in my opinion.)

The ironic thing is that the killer specifically stated that he chose to use guns to get politicians in the US and NZ to go for more gun control legislation. And that is the first thing the PM wants to go after. So good job being manipulated by this sicko.

The issue here is that these mass shootings are usually meticulously planned over months or years. In this guy’s case he planned it for two years. And they take into account how to get around all the laws so they can kill dozens of people. And that is one of the main reasons all these retroactive laws are insufficient to stop these things.

we can have a wonderful discussion. Lets not use a situation where the majority do not know the culture of New Zealand in respect to guns, as a vehicle.
It negates the discussion.
