As a few of you know, the past several months have been very difficult for me. I have been suffering from financial, housing, neurological, medical and caregiver related issues that have made life very difficult for me.

During this time, I lost the phone number of someone who was an important part of my spiritual support group, who had gone to a great deal of effort to help me out should my living situation turn intolerable. For some reason, I kept losing this ladies phone number.

Tonight I wrote her daughter [as her mother does not have email] asking for her forgiveness. I feel as if I don’t really deserve it and said as much in my email. Yet I finally overcame my shame and reached out tonight.

Please pray that she does forgive me, or at the very least, that she receives some sort of healing for any hurt that I may have caused her. She does not have to forgive me, but I at least would ask for prayers that any harm or distress I may have caused her would be lessened or removed before Easter. Shame and embarrassment is a heavy burden, and i would feel much better knowing that at least her burden was softened.

Thank you for your consideration and prayers.

What is to be forgiven? Losing something is no sin. Even throwing it away might be only a poor decision. In the case of sin, it is so good to remember what Pope Francis recently said. “God never tires of forgiving us.” This provides us with great hope, as we are saved by our hope (Romans 8:24).

**Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now,
and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.**

E,

There is nothing to forgive! If scattiness and losing things were mortal sins; I’d have to bring a sleeping bag into the Confessional!

I will pray that your friendship with this lady is renewed and that God gives you the grace of strength and courage to carry your burdens. I’m a carer too and sometimes it can be very, very difficult. Be kinder to yourself, my dear.

Steps to Forgiveness
A summary from Judgment, Justice, Vengeance, and the Law of God vs. Forgiveness
Michael Burris
  1. Remember that forgiveness means to untie (ourselves from the “ball and chain” of the “evil” in a person), to leave behind or give up (surrender to God), to “Let go and Let God” (take the responsibility from us), to “Let it Be” as the song says. Forgiveness is the fastest way to “untie you from the cords of destiny that have painfully bound you two together.” The Law of Liberty (unconditional agape love) means no more “strings attached!” Forgiveness lifts or “looses” the burdens off both of your backs! You’ll feel lighter right away. But judgment and unforgiveness “binds” heavier burdens on both of your backs. “Holding on” to another’s “evil” is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. Bitterness and resentment (keeping lists of wrongs) are an acid that eats you up!
  2. My wife asked the Lord “How are we set free from being judgmental and condemning” and this is the rhema word God gave her. I’ve inserted words in [brackets] for clarity: “Repent. Look at Jesus. He did not come to judge and condemn, but to save. My grace heals you from the pain that the world and sin inflict. You are an inflictor of [your own] pain, and the worst of [this pain] is your own judgment and condemnation. What you use to make things ‘right and fair’ * is the thing that hurts others and yourself the most. Love makes things ‘right and fair.’ Forgiveness makes things ‘right and fair.’ It is ‘fair’ to give love when you have been given love everlasting. It is ‘right’ to give forgiveness when you have been given forgiveness. Yes, I heal others when they come to me, but I can heal others through you when you love them. When you do not ‘win’ with judgment and condemnation, you save the world from much pain and [therefore much] needed healing. Trust Me to make the world ‘right’ through love. Give to Me what I have given you. When you give to your fellow man, you are giving to Me. I am the judge of men’s hearts and of good and evil. You may look forward to eradication of evil, but it will be my work and not your own.”
  3. When my wife asked “What is forgiveness?” this is the rhema word God gave her: “It says to the other, ‘I know your struggle. I know your need for love, significance, and joy. I know you are searching for it. You have looked in the wrong place. You have hurt me and others in the process. I pray that you find Him, the source of all that you need and are looking for. I will not stay angry with you or hold you to repaying my pain or loss. If I did, then I would be making the same mistake – going to the wrong place. My God is the healer of my pain, my vindicator, and my provider. I have hurt many people; may God heal, vindicate, and provide for them.’ ”
  4. When she asked “How do I then forgive?” this is the rhema word God gave her: “Pray for them; love them; release them; hope for the best for them.” When she asked “What do I release them from?” the Lord said: “Their debt and your control. Unforgiveness remembers and reacts to their wrong done. It keeps the event in the present and prevents healing. It clogs the conduits of my power. Christ gave you the power to forgive. You find it in Him.”
  5. Remember the dream I had about the black gentleman being tempted by those around him to lash out in their bitterness and resentment about the inequity, unfairness, and injustice of prejudice against blacks. They were urging him to fight for their rights against “Whitey.” His peaceful face became distorted and he made his hand into a fist to hurt me. I pleaded with him in the Spirit, saying “You don’t have to be like them. There will always be racism. Your angry behavior will only reinforce the stereotyping and prejudice. It won’t fix anything; it will only perpetuate it. The way to help fix it is to Rise Above it! Rise Above!” I knew the dream was Jesus telling me that my bitterness, resentment, anger, judgment, and unforgiveness wasn’t going to fix the problem (the hurt) done to me, but that it would perpetuate it. The answer was to “Rise Above.”
  6. Like that dream, realize unforgiveness won’t change anything. It keeps you tied to “evil” in limbo land, in the status quo, and therefore stuck and unable to move forward in life. Nothing ever gets better this way. Unforgiveness doesn’t even make you feel better! The avoidance of the “pain of forgiveness” actually perpetuates your pain forever. Unforgiveness is like getting stuck in a record groove – you just go around and around, never getting anywhere, never moving forward in life. It’s like the stubborn Israelites wandering in circles in the desert. You end up stuck with your pain until you finally die! Why? Only because you didn’t learn the lesson to “Let Go and Let God!” If they thought they could stop you with their hurting words, prove them wrong by “letting go” and getting back on track doing what you intended.
  7. “Be like a little child about forgiveness,” my wife said to me. So I asked, “How so Lord?” Then I saw how often I argued and fist-fought with my neighbor when I was a little kid. Yet, in a day or two we were back together laughing and playing together. Then I thought about my dog, who after biting the heck out of me because of something I did that accidently hurt him, and scared him to death, in 30 minutes was back playing with me like nothing ever happened. I’ve wanted that kind of unconditionality! So, I’m hearing: “Be a little child, for the Kingdom of God is theirs.”*

Holy Michael the Archangel defend us in the day of battle.
Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,
by the Power of God,
thrust down to hell satan and all the wicked spirits,
who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession and was left forsaken. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand, a sorrowful sinner. Despise not my words, O Mother of the Word, but in your mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen

Praying that the Lord may heal and restore your friendship. Also praying for all necessary graces for both of you.

I promise to pray for you! At times things seem just impossible to us, I have been tested too in the past- God at times asks a lot from us but it can all be offered in union with the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross. I hope all works out, sometimes forgiving ourselves is harder than to forgive others and for them to forgive us- do not worry, lay your scruples in the hands of Jesus in the Sacrament of Confession- he will absolve and cure you!
