Memorare (Prayer to Our Lady)
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen

Hail Mary,
full of grace,
the LORD is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
JESUS.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

My creator, I am now willing that You should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to You and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do Your bidding. Amen.

From the Imitation of Christ,chapt.20,#3:Would that You,most powerful God of Israel, the lover of all faithful souls, would look upon the sarrow and struggle of your poorest servant, and come to my assistance in all that I must do.Strengthen me,O Lord, with heavenly fortitude,so that the old enemy, the devil and my wretched flesh-not yet fully subject to the spirit-may not prevail over me:for it is against them that I must fight continually during this wretched life. Amen.
Amen.

  • Praying for all so afflicted and their loved ones, whether able to post or not…
Lord Jesus Christ, You have willed that St. Dymphna should be invoked by thousands of clients as the patroness of nervous and mental disease and have brought it about that her interest in these patients should be an inspiration to and an ideal of charity throughout the world. Grant that, through the prayers of this youthful martyr of purity, those who suffer from nervous and mental illness everywhere on earth may be helped and consoled. .

Be pleased to hear the prayers of St. Dymphna and of Your Blessed Mother. Give those whom I recommend the patience to bear with their affliction and resignation to do Your divine will. Give them the consolation they need and especially the cure they so much desire, if it be Your will. Through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done, on earth as it as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day, our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive
those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil.
Amen

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee.

blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us now, and
at the hour of our death.
Amen

Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, as is and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell,
lead all souls to heaven, especially, those in most need of Your Mercy.
Amen

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle,
be our protection against the malice and snares
of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray;
and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host,
by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and
all evil spirits who wander through
the world for the ruin of souls.
Amen.

These things I’ve learned…

All addictions have a spiritual, psychological & physiological aspect. True recovery requires addressing all three. The Catholic Church provides us with many tools on the spiritual side; Confession, Mass, Eucharist Adoration, Spiritual Counseling, the Rosary and more. However, many addicts find themselves not recovering in spite of years of genuine attempts on the spiritual and religious side. That is because the physiological & psychological components are not being addressed.

There is a neurochemical component to the addictive cycle. The brain has been taken hostage. For this, the addict needs therapy led by an experienced addiction mental health professional. To ignore the need of therapy is to delay the chances of true recovery.

Sex addiction is now being recognized by the mental health field to be the most complex of all addictions. Masturbation and porn are a gateway to sex addiction. It re-wires the brain with a surge of neurochemicals in action during the addictive cycle. These processes are slowly re-wiring the brain. There is a tidal wave of sex addicts today and “in the make” due to exposure to porn content that does a number in the brain circuitry before, during and after the acting out episode. It is a serious addiction, but not hopeless.

For sex addiction, only those experienced mental health professionals treating other sex addicts seem to be most effective. Many (not all) alcohol & drug Counselors do not yet totally understand the scope of sex addiction. Part of recovery involves digging deep into the emotional wounds of the sex addict, which leads them to the acting out behavior. This addiction is very complex. The addict cannot do this alone. Joining a 12 Step sex addiction program improves the chances of recovery. The 12 Steps fellowship is in complete alignment with the teaching of the Chuch. It is a spiritual program that has brought countless Catholic men and women closer to Christ. Ask any practicing Catholic that belongs to AA and is in long term recover.

For the advanced sex addict, in-patient treatment is necessary.

I believe the sex scandal in the Church is the result of priests with sex addictions and not receiving adequate treatment from the right resources that understand this addiction. Sex addiction within the Clergy is not exclusive of the Catholic Church. It is within all religious organizations. This is not a religion issue. To keep it at a solely religion, sinful level is counterproductive. It’s is much more than that. What is happening within the Church is a mirror of what is happening outside the Church. The good news is that Church can now take a sincere and honest look into the complexity of this disease, and resolve to minister to the sex addict by pointing them to recovery resources that address all 3 components of the addiction. I am a practicing Catholic in recovery. Please keep me in your prayers.
