Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done, on earth, as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now,
and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Well, I don’t know if we had a breakthrough tonight or not. Tell me what you think. At the counselors, my wife shared more details on the types of threats her ex leveled against her years ago, more than she had ever shared with me. Clearly her fear isn’t just in her head. Numerous times he threatened her life and the lives of the kids if he didn’t get his way, even to the point of forcing intimacy when she didn’t want it.

That said, the head of the marriage tribunal in our diocese some time ago said the process for anulment required the notification of the ex (and it appeared that meant without exception). He figured that since its been 17 years since the civil marriage ended, that the danger wouldn’t be there anymore, though he was willing to have a letter sent out from another diocese for the notification so as to avoid him figuring out where we live (assuming we had already moved since he knows where we are now), but she’s not convinced he couldn’t figure it out anyway.

So knowing that we weren’t likely to get any different answer with the head of the marriage tribunal, (or at least trying to spare my wife from having to share her painful story more than once in case I felt the need to appeal a decision), I offered to see if I could arrange a meeting with the diocesan bishop (who might be more tactful and sensitive in the very least) to see if my wife and I could meet with him and have her explain her past and how she now feels (that she can’t bring herself to have her ex notified out of fear of what he might do). She agreed to that and said if the Bishop were willing to make an exception for us (not requiring notification of her ex) that she would be willing to go through with the anulment so as to let me convert.

So this is a sort of breakthrough insofar as she will have her first meeting with an ordained person of the Catholic faith on this subject. I don’t know if it is within the ability of a bishop to make an exception here. Perhaps not. But if not, maybe the meeting could result in something positive happening that I cannot foresee? What does everyone here think?

This is another gift of God isn’t it Steve, that your wife has been able to share just how much she’s been carrying from that first marriage. It must be painful for you to know how much your poor wife has suffered in the past, and what strength she has. She’s a great lady.

God bless you both and help you both continue the journey, as you find out some of the reasons why God hasn’t rushed to change things.

It’s an opinion that he ex isn’t still dangerous and selfish as he appeared to be from what you’ve said, but I ask You our God to ensure this family’s safety and to ensure that Your will be done in their lives. Please if at all possible let there be exceptions made in this instance.

I agree with Trishie. This whole experience may help your wife overcome some things that have thus far hindered her growth in becoming the best version of herself (Matthew Kelly speak :)). It may also be a tremendous blessing for your marriage.

Dearest Lord,
As always, we trust in your divine providence and tender mercy. We again entrust Steve and his wife to your loving care. We also pray for the conversion of her ex-husband. Help them to lean not on their own understanding but relinquish all control of this situation to you, knowing your will is the ultimate good. Replace worry and anxiety with your peace. Help Steve to know that his desire to please you does, in fact, please you.

Bless the meeting with the Bishop, that the Holy Spirit will be present and the gifts of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding will prevail.

In the name of Christ, Our Lord, we pray. Amen.

I’m sorry I’ve been out of communication for quite awhile but my clinical depression meds quit working like they used to and it has taken several months and a few changes and tweaking of dosages to get back to feeling normal again. For the longest time after being almost useless for nearly a whole weekend, I got up to being barely functional and had very little ambition for more than the bare necessities.

My wife and I have continued counseling and have solved other issues as we await the resolution to my being able to convert. The Bishop of our diocese has granted the chance to meet him to discuss the possibility of a dispensation from the usual process of notification of her ex regarding the initiating of a process of annulment of her first marriage. However, there have been a couple of times where scheduling conflicts have kept us from getting a date set on the Bishop’s calendar. The time between his scheduling sessions is quite lengthy so we await another offer of a time, and try to wait patiently as hard as that is. I feel selfish in asking for prayers given the greater needs of others, but any and all help is sure appreciated. I do long for the day when I can “come home.”

In relation to gaining a secret annulment/desanctification of a marriage . . . the Church has acted rather ambiguously about granting secret annulments in some cases in the past . . . below is a link in relation to the infamous Kennedy clan annulment regarding young Joe Kennedy’s marriage here in the United States . . . who received a secret annulment of his first marriage . . . which was granted in complete secrecy . . . and his Godly ex-wife was not notified and found out about it after the fact . . . and she subsequently . . . though not a Catholic . . . petitioned the Roman Catholic Church and got the secret annulment reversed and wrote a book about it . . . "Shattered Faith" . . . so . . . going by this particular annulment as a precedent . . . it is evident that . . .
sometimes *. . . it is possible to secretly gain an annulment of a marriage . . . without notification of the former spouse . . .

O Father, in the name of Your Son Jesus,
and in the power and authority of the Holy Spirit,
I ask that You fill this couple
with the knowledge of Your will
through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.
Enlighten this precious child of Yours, dear Lord!
Teach this dear one to live in a manner
that is worthy of You,
so as to be fully pleasing to You,
full of good works bearing good fruits
and ever growing in knowledge of You.
Strengthen this lost lamb, dear Lord,
with every power of Your Holy Spirit,
in accordance with Your might,
for all endurance and patience,
with joy, giving thanks to You O Father!
Make Your child fit to share in the inheritance
of the holy ones in the Light.
Deliver this beloved one from the power of darkness
and transfer this couple
into the kingdom of Your Beloved Son, Jesus,
in whom is redemption and the forgiveness of sins.

Amen.
