Hey all,

I hope you can forgive me for being away for so long. I’ve been so busy for such a long time and bouncing back and forth with a lack of energy. Now I’m feeling better and have a much more normal schedule again. Here’s an update:

The bishop who had our case for anulment was reassigned and the diocesan administrator has it now. We’ve not had any contact since the transition which happened Jan. 4. I meet with my spiritual director on Feb. 22 and if there has been no contact by then, he said he would put in a call for me. Meanwhile through much discernment, I believe I’m being called to chaplaincy (which can be done as a layman or as one ordained) so I sent in a very lengthy application to a program here locally for a 12 month residency program that will make me eligible for licensure if I am accepted which will give me a path to gainful employment at the point of completion of the program (there is a stipend to carry me and my family through the residency). Should I be accepted, then I will be able to resign my current pastorate and begin RCIA while waiting for a resolution to the request for a dispensation in regard to the anulment process. Though things have taken quite a while to sort out, and though I’m still waiting in regard to a chief piece (the anulment) in regard to my conversion (so I can receive the sacraments) I do believe a path has been revealed and that is progress. In the meantime God has kept me on a roughly even keel spiritually and emotionally, helping me to be patient as I wait for him to do what needs doing. Your prayers for my acceptance to the chaplain residency program as well as for resolution to the anulment dispensation question will be greatly appreciated!

Heavenly Father, please, I beg you, have mercy on all here in this prayer site who come before you with needs great and small. Let your light shine sufficient so that all who walk in darkness can know you are leading them and that your grace will lead them out of the fog they are in. Please heal those who have come asking for healing and those for whom others have come asking. And through all of these blessings great and small, move hearts - the hearts of those asking and the hearts of those being asked for - that all grow in desire to be closer to you, that all find and grow in a zealousness to live for you and love all people as you have loved us. I ask this through Christ our Lord and with the help of the intercession of our Mother Mary under the title of “Our Lady of Guadalupe”, St. Bridget whom you allowed to perform a miracle that opened my eyes to a dimension of your power that I was blind to formerly, and all the saints and angels. Amen.
 
After going through much counseling with my wife over her issues with me leaving my Lutheran pulpit, now its like we are back to square one. I don’t want to minimize her feeling of loss (recently expressed as a loss of the tangible element to her memories here at the parsonage we live in). She is very angry and feeling hurt about the fact that my conversion means we have to leave the house we live in and the worshipping community we’ve been with for the last seven 1/2 years. I feel like I’m in a no win situation. The only bright spot is that the counselors asked her at our last session to think about what could be done to resolve my dillema over my need to convert and at present feeling like a hypocrite for staying in my current position because I have to live a double life and can’t really put all of myself into my ministry (implied in this is that we keep our marriage together). I am getting the cold shoulder right now. I wonder what her response will be next week. Please, I do need your prayers. I’m sorry I was away for so long.

Thanks to all here for the continued prayers. I don’t have the body sores and I haven’t lost all my children in a house collapse, but I sure feel like Job. I was led to believe that a Diocesan Administrator would have no trouble in resolving the request of my wife (up or down) for a dispensation from notifying her abusive ex in an anulment procedure - but now my spiritual advisor thinks that it may have to wait for a new Bishop to be appointed (6-8 months from now) and then who knows how long after that because the new Bishop will have a ton of requests and getting to know folks, and my little anulment request seems to keep finding its way to the bottom of the pile.

Then last night at counseling, my dearest let on that I was selfish for wanting to convert to Catholicism given that not only does it require a job change for me with most likely a drop in pay, but that our family has to leave the parsonage house we live in (and likely move to a trailer we can afford, meaning having to give up a number of the possessions we’ve aquired), and leaving our worshipping community of 7 1/2 years which she figures will end in a loss of friendships as well (even though I’ve agreed to wait at least a year before being public locally about my conversion). Three weeks ago we had all the compromises worked out and now its like we’re back to square one.

I’m not to the point of telling God I wish I never had been born, but oy, I’m already 43, I don’t think I can survive another 39 years in the wilderness. I asked my spiritual advisor about what happens if the dispensation doesn’t come through and I’m not able to receive the sacraments, and then God forbid, I die. He said I would still be in a state of grace. But I’m not sure I’m in a state of grace now. So how can that be accurate?

I’m sorry, Steve. I know how difficult this must be for you and I will continue to pray that God will open doors for you to come home to the Church, that he will soften your wife’s heart, and that you will look back on this time and praise God for the crooked path that brought you to Him in the sacraments.

I guarantee that if God wills for you and your family to come Home to the Church, it will happen. I wouldn’t doubt that He’s giving you a story that will later give others courage in adversity and faith to the faithless.

I can’t speak for God, but I know He is not held bound by His own sacraments. His mercy abounds and He knows your heart. To worry about what happens if you die means your heart loves His law and He is very aware of that. For myself, in the times I’m tempted to worry about those things, I find the Brown Scapular has been a great blessing. I’m not superstitious, but I do love all the sacramentals of the Church.

My prayer for you:
Dearest Lord Jesus, all praise and honor and glory be unto you. Thank you for your many blessings, including the gift of adversity that leads us into deeper dependance upon you and intimacy with you. Lord, I lift up Steve at this time. Please shower him with your grace, that he may accept your will in all things. Grant him the gift of trust. Help him to surrender this situation completely into your hands. Help him utter that beautiful phrase of our Blessed Mother, “Let it be done to me according to your Word.” Lord, we know that you will for all your children to receive the sacraments that you have given us. Please open the doors for Steve to come home to the Church. In your Holy Name we pray. Amen.
