your prayers were answered.
Grant to us that same fortitude, patience,
and trust in the Lord.

Dear God, I pray concurrently for each person You place in my life, for each member of my family—earthly and spiritual—as if each were the only one. I commit them totally to You so that Your love becomes the source of all their thoughts and actions.
For all who cannot at this time in their lives pray or believe, I ask You to allow them a share in my prayers, my sacramental participation, and my acts of kindness. In Your infinite love, draw them speedily to Yourself in joy and peace!

Thank You merciful God who wish all souls to live in You. Thank You for the blessings You have given to our loved ones.

Our children and family love

God, in Jesus’ name, please give us unconditional love for each other. Let us be sensitive to each other’s needs, and ready to make allowances for each other’s weakness or disposition. Help us to interact courteously and honestly, without fear of rejection. Let us encourage each other to develop our talents and potential. Help us lead each other to goodness and wholeness, through mutual encouragement and kindness.

Where it is beneficial, give us wisdom to correct each other lovingly and firmly, without harsh criticism that damages relationship and self-esteem. Give us wisdom not to be reactively unkind or restrictive, or opposed to change that may enrich anyone’s lives. Help us to forgive others when they hurt us, and to repent our own offence to anyone. Forgive our failures in prayer, penance and witness towards others, and supply what is lacking with fullness of life in You.

God please form our children into true Christians. Inspire them to desire and love You and to consecrate themselves as delightful channels of Your goodness. Develop and enhance their gifts, so that each grows in wholeness and holiness. Preserve them from sin, but make them aware of Your great mercy.

Should our children abandon Your Church, please restore them quickly to Sacrament and divine truth. Through Your Spirit, enlighten those who doubt You, ignore You or are lukewarm. If their absence is protracted, please nevertheless fulfil Your will in them.

Through their journeying, allow them to bring new gifts into our midst. Please always watch over them and their families in all their needs and endeavours. Thank You for Your love of them, which infinitely exceeds our own. Please always guide and protect them.
Jesus may we walk with You. Let Your promises be fulfilled in our lives for Your honour and for others’ blessing. Use us for Your purposes. Let Your Holy Spirit guide and empower us with gifts to serve You and people for You. God, let us love each other with Your love.
*
“Stop your crying and wipe away your tears. All that you have done for your children will not go unrewarded; they will return from the enemy’s land. There is hope for your future; your children will come back home. I, the Lord, have spoken.”* [Jeremiah 31:16-17]

My Family

God, I thank You for everyone in my family, for their goodness and abilities and for the difficulties that they have overcome. Thank You for our mutual love and forgiveness of flaws or failures.

Jesus taught that whatever our other achievements, it is upon our charity that You will judge us. Scripture tells us “charity covers a multitude of sins”. Let charity cover the sins of everyone in our families, whether they believe in You or not. Let it implore Your everlasting mercy and redemption for each of us. Let each one remember Jesus’ account of the final judgement, and be encouraged to continue in loving and charitable works.

Lead each family member to heaven, welcoming the loving and kind intentions and acts of their lives as evidence of their worthiness to be counted with the “sheep” of “the Good Shepherd on the Day of Judgement”. If any of them overlook relationship with You or doubt Your existence, let the love and life manifest in their lives prove their fidelity to Your Spirit. Let them experience and embrace Your merciful love as they enter eternal life.

I offer my family to Your divine mercy, through the merits of Jesus, with the prayers of all saints and angels. Make us a delight to You in the way love characterises our lives.

Prayer for unbelieving Spouse

God, through the love and merit of Jesus and Mary, I offer You all my spouse’s good deeds, sacrifices and trials, in prayer for his salvation, fulfilment, happiness and peace.
Foster him/her as Your own child, for if he/she truly knew You, he/she would be a loving, obedient son/daughter.

I offer every frustration and disappointment, all sadness and suffering of his life, together with his pleasures, satisfactions, and achievements. I offer him to You, united in that terrible hour that Jesus cried out to You, “My God, my God, why have You abandoned me?” Thus may his sufferings be powerful prayer for souls. In Your mercy, please unite him with the Mystical Body so that even without his knowledge his life is a living prayer pleasing in Your sight.

If in any way, I fail to convey Your love to him, or I do not enrich his life with warm gifts of my nature, please forgive me and heal him. Guide me to give him the love, joy and goodness that you have united us to share, and lead him to love me freely and honestly.

Please forgive and overcome his cynicism and doubt. Open him to Your Spirit. Let him experience Your love in his life, so that he enters into sacramental faith and dedicated Christian ministry. Grant him resurrection with Your Son Jesus.

The prophets argue with God for their people

Our God, I emulate Moses and Abraham in praying for my dear ones, for the Church, for priests, and for numerous others throughout the world, whether or not followers of Jesus or members of His Church.

This temporal world obscures the spiritual world, thus many good people sincerely do not believe in You. Life is complex and challenging, as the people of Abraham and Moses knew. They turned aside from a God who seemed unresponsive to some of their genuine needs for security and progress. A natural human response is to move away from pain of hope in God and religion. The Jews desired a manageable, tangible God, as even do some of Your modern followers.

When You sent Moses back to the people, determined to bring Your wrath against them for displacing their God and Rescuer with a statue, Moses argued with You to spare them. Moses, scripture tells us, was ‘the humblest man on earth’, yet he won in the argument for mercy, and Your wrath therefore did not come against his people. They remained the chosen people of God.

Like Moses and Abraham, I humbly bargain for the eternal happiness of my dear ones, and of all benevolent unbelievers. In their sincere choices to be considerate in the relationships and events of their lives, they effectively choose to stand with the sheep at the last judgement—that yardstick by which Jesus, Your beloved Son, measures charity. I plead the judgement story of Jesus for my dear ones and for all unbelievers who offer kindness to others.

Bless and flood them with Your love, goodness and truth. Bring them to love and worship You. Let them merit a final judgement with the ‘good sheep’. Transform them into the image of Christ, following His path. Restore anyone whom they have wounded or failed. Grant that they live the Gospel in love and forgiveness.

Thank You for the beauty and goodness in the lives of my dear ones and of all persons. Thank You for the love and service they give others and therefore Yourself, even where they are unconscious of this union in Your love. March 2005

Spirit, draw my loved ones into faith and Sacrament

Dear God, the welfare and happiness of my loved ones is radically important to me. When they suffer, I suffer with them. When they are happy, I rejoice. I wish them to attain their happiness and potential, their welfare and security.

They labour to develop and excel in their talents, to overcome difficulties, and to be generous to others. Thank You for the love and goodness in their hearts and interactions, for love is the action of Your Spirit. Jesus said that kind and generous acts are what “separate the sheep from the goats”; and “whatever you do for even the least of my little ones, you do for Me.”

Thank You, God where I had grace to witness love to them as a legacy. Although I tried sincerely, I failed to lastingly transmit to my descendents that Jesus came to teach us, to save us, and to give us the Sacraments when He commissioned His first priests and the Church through the Holy Spirit in Confirmation after His ascension.

Despite John the Baptist’s objection, Jesus sought baptism as example to us of the necessity of this Sacrament. He gave us the Sacrament of Reconciliation through His first priests, the apostles, when he said, “Whose sins you will forgive, they are forgiven, whose sins you shall retain, they are retained”.

On the eve of His sacrificial death for our redemption, Jesus gave us Eucharist as His crowning gift, changing bread and wine into His body and blood, enjoining us through His first priests to do this in memory of Him. If we live as if the word, example, and desire of God Incarnate are meaningless, are we not calling Jesus Christ, God and man, a liar and a fool?

However, if my loved ones lack the gift of faith from the Holy Spirit, they cannot fake it and it is unrealistic and unfair to expect them to sacrifice their time, energy, or regret. Clarifications of their ideological positions reveal that, without extraordinary grace, they are unlikely to seek the Sacraments or to embrace the Catholic Church. I cannot change their feelings about God and the Sacraments, as You gave everyone free will.

My loved ones are Yours also. They are sincere and live good lives. If You want them to love You, call them to Yourself, in time, if not now. They see that the community of the Church is imperfect, because people are imperfect. The Church suffers human shortcomings and restrictions, because many Christians are not committed enough, and because for decades few men whom You have called to priesthood in Western countries have responded, thus a shortage of priests cripples the Church. Please override these imperfections to allow Your Spirit in the Church to speak to society and to family.

Jesus said that some things are not achieved except by both prayer and sacrifice, so please help me make the sacrifices necessary to obtain for them a genuine faith in You, an active relationship with You in faithful Spirit-filled lives. Help my loved ones in every way as I continue to pray and offer Mass for them. Please fulfil Your intentions for my dear ones and me. I want to love You wholeheartedly and to live a Eucharistic life for family, priests, and others’ souls. You are my life, and my hope, and I am Your child. I wish to live in the Spirit according to Your dream of me, for me, and through me. September 2005

God, please forgive anything in my nature and behaviour that blocked graces intended for loved ones. I offer the incarnation, life, sacrifice, resurrection and divinity of Jesus, for their sake and for everyone You desire me to love and serve. God please go back into the moments where I failed make others’ lives easier and happier. Please warm the moments, heal the issues with Your love, and please make up for any way I have failed or hurt anyone.
Code:
My family, forgive any way that I fail you. I love you and I am grateful and respectful of your goodness and kindness, and of all your amazing achievements. I hope that God is very proud of you. I honour God for creating you, for shaping you and giving the gifts that are hidden in your being for God’s secret delight, and for giving you those gifts that you share with others. God’s love shines through you in many colours and subtleties, whether you realise or not. You are beautiful prisms of God’s love. God is honoured as another facet shines through in something you do or say for others.

I know that you are not ‘perfect’. Yet a concept of ‘perfection’ is confusing because Jesus’ humanness portrayed itself no less humanly than yours. His love for others, like yours, was evident. He displayed the range of human emotions and responses, “without sin”, despite what seemed like rage in the temple, and occasional harsh words to the self-serving and indifferent. His disappointments and discouragement appear sometimes amid his efforts and suffering as do his grief, his joy, his tenderness, and his friendliness.

May you grow ever more Christlike, more wholly human, as God shapes you, unknown perhaps to you. I love you, as you are, with your wonderful strengths and your natural human weaknesses. I love you, with your successes and failures. I love you with the shadows you hide and with the beauty you reveal. I love you as you are, now, and always, while I live and when I die, my darling ones.
