Prayer for Priests

Almighty Father, grant to these servants of Yours the dignity
of the priesthood. Renew within them the Spirit of holiness.
As co-workers with the order of bishops may they be faithful
to the ministry that they receive from You, Lord God, and be
to others a model of right conduct.

May they be faithful in spreading the good news, so that the
words of the Gospel may reach the ends of the earth, and the
family of nations, made one in Christ, may become God’s one,
holy people.

Amen.

I didn’t write the following, but this is a prayer I found when searching for prayers through the intercession of St John Marie Vianney. As most of you probably know, the Pope has declared this the year for priests honoring St John Vianney (began June 19, 2009).

Dear Saint John Vianney,

Your childhood dream was to be a Priest, to win souls for God. You endured years of toil and humiliation to attain the Priesthood. You became a priest truly after God’s own heart, outstanding in humulity and poverty; prayer and mortification. Totally devoted to the service of God’s people. The Church has exalted you as model and patron saint of all Parish priests, trusting that your example and prayers will help them to live up to the high dignity of their vocation to be faithful servants of God’s people, to be perfect imitators of Christ the Saviour Who came not to be served but to serve, to give His Life in ransom for many.

Pray that God may give to His Church today many more priests after His own Heart. Pray for all the priests under your patronage, that they may be worthy representatives of Christ the Good Shepherd. May they wholeheartedly devote themselves to prayer and penance; be examples of humility and poverty; shining modelss of holiness; tireless and powerful preachers of the Word of God; zealous dispensers of God’s Grace in the Sacraments. May their loving devotion to Jesus in the Eucharist and to Mary His Mother be the Twin Fountains of fruitfulness for their ministry.

Amen.

Heavenly Father, grant that Your servant priests cling to our Lord Jesus when their pastoral boat is tossed on the waves of this life. May they trust Your Son with their very existence, not asking love of Him, but returning love to Him. For it is in clinging to the Rock that their lives will regain the calm that they seek. Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, gives us peace not as the world gives it, but as You, Father, grant it to us. Lord God, graciously strengthen them to hold tightly, to remain faithful, and to persevere, as their eternity is within their grasp. We pray that their calm example will call young men to follow them into Your service. May we, who struggle daily to become and remain faithful, follow the example of Your priests, knowing that You are with them and bless them continually. Grant this through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Your only Son, Who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God for ever and ever. Amen! Alleluia!

Prayer for Priests

Holy God, our Father, we thank you for the gift of the priesthood. Thank you for calling these men to dedicate their lives, their desires, their bodies, their service to You and Your Church. We pray that you would protect them from doubt, excessive trial, despair, or frustration and grant them abundant supernatural joy. Fill our priests with an eagerness to serve, closeness to Your Sacred Heart, patience, and humility. Mother Mary carry these men in your own heart and present them to the throne of your Son that their witness would inspire and encourage. Grant the Church holiness in all Her members. Amen.
