Prayer request for Lourdes, France

At 9:30AM today, just as I do every day, I went to the live web cam at the Shrine at Lourdes for the rosary in French. What I saw was the entire shrine totally underwater. Benches and kneelers before the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes were gone. The Gave River overflowed its banks. There is reported to be 2.5 million Euros in damages. Also, parts of this small wonderful town near the shrine were flooded including shops, restaurants, hotels - places where these people work and live to earn a living.

Please pray.
 
I am praying, I did the same thing this morning and was :eek: I think they got the benches out because they show a video where the prelate is talking about the last flood, so I think they had some notice the river was getting high. But it will still be a big clean-up when the river finally goes down.

Here are more recent video clips from the flooding, it is worse now, and there is more debris in the water as its power grows from the volume. I am praying for the rain to stop soon so the river can go back down.

This is so sad to see :(. I was there two weeks ago for the first time in my life and it was such a holy place. Really touched me deeply and I felt at home.

Oh this breaks my heart to watch! It feels like it must for people who lose their homes in floods or fires. I left part of myself there, I’m going back in September “come hell or high water”, literally.
 
Lourdes TV The Clean-up Begins

You can see the latest clips on Lourdes TV - the water has gone down and the clean-up has begun. Lots of mud, lots of debris, lots of pavement washed away. Quite a bit of damage in the underground cathedral but at least the water didn’t get up high enough to damage the altar or the pipe organ. This was much worse than October 2012, and it comes during the high season for pilgrimages.

Two people lost their lives in other parts of the Pyrenees. Please pray for them.

It literally makes me weep to look at these pictures. And yesterday the web cam was up and running (evening here in NY) and the river is very high, it’s right to the top of the banks and it’s running very fast. This might not be over. I’m wondering how “random” this event was, if this is a sign that God is losing patience with us, knowing Pope Francis is most likely making plans to do the consecration. I’d be interested in any comments he may have made on this disaster, should anyone have them. I pray for those who lost their lives and for the thousands of pilgrims whose pilgrimages were turned into something they didn’t bargain for. May the Lord bless them for being witnesses.
 
The Grotto will be open at 3:30 pm French time (8:30 am where I am) for the first rosary since the flood. The cam is on again and shows the work being done on the Grotto to get it ready.

I would not interpret this as a sign of God’s wrath. Natural disasters are what they are. This earth is not a paradise and many places are outright dangerous for humans to inhabit. Natural disasters have happened since time began and they happen in good times and bad.

The water is about 2 feet under the top of the retaining wall this morning.
 
Well, the rosary is NOT being said in the Grotto, but in another location on site (don’t recognize it but it looks to be a chapel). Maybe the Grotto will be ready by tomorrow, there is a lot of activity inside it.

So sad to see this. It seems like quiet a lot of damage.

On a positive note, maybe they can make some additions while rebuilding the Pius X basilica to make it look more like a Church as well. The current design of it was very bland and the twisted metal crucifixion scene at the altar was very hard to grasp as to what it was.

But still sad to see these videos.

Agreed on all counts.
 
Yesterday the rosary was said in the Grotto for the first time, two chaplains and I think the Rector in attendance. They prayed for continual restoration and thanked God for the work that had already been done. It’s amazing how fast this restoration is going and it was wonderful to say the rosary with them again while, at the same time, watching back hoes and equipment working hard to bring the shrine back to itself. Praise God.

Thank you, Lord, for giving these people the wisdom and strength to restore your precious Mother’s beloved shrine.

👍 Yes, they have a long way to go, but they’ve done a lot in a very short time. I pray that they are at least able to raise the level of the walls a few feet to keep the river out of the shrine and the town on the other side. These 2 floods, in October 2012 and now this one, have cost the town and area a lot of money, time and effort to repair.

God bless the firemen with their hoses to wash all the mud away!
