I’ve been away for a bit also and just saw this update. I will offer my Mass tomorrow morning for your health and for your daughter’s married life.
Thank you for your prayers. I’m not feeling very well these days. I ask that you remember me in your prayers.

Also, I want to thank those who were interested in my daughter’s wedding. The wedding took place on April 6, the evening before Divine Mercy Sunday. It was a beautiful wedding. I had the honor of planning the liturgy. It was quite beautiful, in Greek and Latin with lots of candles, incense, organ music and sacred polyphony. There were many priests, deacons and brothers on the sanctuary. There were also many religious sisters in the congregation.

I had the joy of walking my daughter down the aisle along with my son. The three of us are the only remaining members of our immediate family. We thought it appropriate that father and brother give away the bride. She said that she wanted to walk down the aisle with the two men who had been, as she put it “My anchor (father) and my lifeboat (brother).”

For a while, it was touch and go whether I would be able to attend the wedding at all. After some creative thinking, it was possible. She married a wonderful young man who is a very good Catholic. They are off to a great start. They pray together daily and attend daily mass as well as confession together (not in the booth at the same time). They are committed to serving and protecting the voiceless. My new son-in-law is very active in pro-life ministry and my daughter is active in ministry to people with disabilities. They have a truly Franciscan home.

I want to thank those who remembered the wedding and who prayed for them and for me. Please know that even though I’m not here as often as I was, you are all in my daily prayers. I pray daily for those who struggle with the faith, for those who are struggling with the changes in the Church, who are looking for their place in the Church and who are looking to understand. I also pray that God will give all of you and your families that great love and passion for his Church that he has given to me. If I died today and went to hell (which I hope not), I would die with gratitude in my heart and mind for the gift of the Church, warts and all.

If I could leave all of you one single message it would be to repeat what has so often been said, “Be children of the Church.” Mother can make prudential mistakes, like all mothers do; but there is only one Mother. Love her. Cherish her. Obey her. Live and die in her bosom.

I will return as soon as I feel better.

I remain, always your brother,

Brother JR

Great advice. I will also be praying for you.

Your posts have always educated and helped me.

Maltmom, thanks. Tell him we are worried and have been asking about him.

Really! He should leave us with his schedule so we know his whereabouts at all times!! 😃
I agree about the schedule. That way, no matter where he is, he has a safety net of CAFers available to him if he needs help! 🙂

Brother, you have been such a blessing to me over the years here on CAF. You are in my prayers daily. God Bless.

Dear Lord, please grant Brother JR good health and finger dexterity! (We poorly educated laymen still need his help and insight for a good long time…)

Amen!

You are much in my heart & prayers Br JR

Hail Mary full of grace
The Lord is with thee
Blessed art thou amongst women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus
Holy Mary Mother of God
Pray for us sinners
Now and at the hour of our death
Amen

Our Lady of Ollignies

“I am the Mother of fair love, and of fear,
and of knowledge, and of holy hope.
In me is all grace of the way and of the truth,
in me is all hope of life and of virtue.”
Ecclesiasticus 24: 24-25

I thank you for your prayers. I’m actually feeling their effects. My mind is sharper, which is good. I was in a slump for a few days. You know how it is when you’re not feeling well. You can’t concentrate too long on anything. I’m doing much better in that department. I’m doing some reading and listening to sacred music, which I love. Right now I’m reading St. Louie de Montfort, the autobiography of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the autobiography of St. John Bosco and The Confessions of St. Augustine. To break the heavy reading, I’m reading a really cute historical romance. I love history.

Besides feeling more focused, I’m also finding greater spiritual strength. The Blessed Mother continues to be my guide and inspiration. I’ve read St. Louie many times. Every time I read him, I notice something new. I was particularly struck today by how he explains that God’s humility is best understood precisely because of the fact that he submitted to be hidden in the womb of a mere creature. Not only that, but he submitted to her in obedience as we’re told when he’s found in the temple. “And he was obedient unto them.”

It just reaffirmed for me what I’m always preaching to the brothers and everyone else. Obedience, obedience, obedience. God, created the laws of nature. He created Mary and submits to the very laws of conception, fetal development, childhood and parental authority that he created.

St. Francis of Assisi referred to Our Lady as The Virgin Made Church. It’s a very strange ecclesiology, until you read St. Louie. She is the first to show Christ to the world. She is the first through whom God gives himself in body, soul, humanity and divinity as he does in the Eucharist, which is only possible through the Church.

I’m also enjoying being with St. Max. That’s our dog. He was born on the fest of St. Maximilian Kolbe, one of the patron saints of our little community. Like St. Max, he’s faithful. When I’m worn out and lay down, he lays down at my feet. If I move about the house, he follows me. I go outside to get a breadth of air, he’s right there. When I attend mass in the morning or the LOTH, he goes with me and lies down next to my chair.

St. Max was the guardian of the last house where he lived before being arrested. Not only did he run the first and largest Catholic press in the world, he also led the largest Franciscan house in the world. There were 800 friars in that house. The beauty of it is that the friars all knew him personally. He made time for each one of them. If someone told him that a friar was sick, Brother Max dropped what he was doing and went to sit with the friar, at least for a short while. He was known to bring them food. He had a special wing of the house rehabilitated for the sick and elderly friars. He never went to bed before he took a walk down that wing to make sure that his older and sick sons were being cared for. My little St. Max is just like that. He never goes to sleep or to eat until he checks in on me.

All of this has made me very grateful to God not only for the Church, sacraments and people in my life, but also for the creatures that He gives us. I don’t know if they feel love. I do know that we feel love for them. Love is always a sign that one’s heart is close to the Immaculate Heart. The Immaculate Heart knows only how to love.

All these things are products of your prayers. They’re having an effect on my mind, body and soul. I truly appreciate them.

Thank you, Brother Jay, for letting us know how you are doing. You are always in my prayers, day and night.

What biography of St. Louis are you reading? I have one here, and I think that the author’s last name is “Renault”. I would have to go check.

Presently I am reading “The Life of Mother Theodore Guerin”. She says the same thing you do. Obedience. Obedience. Obedience.

Funny. That is the one reoccurring bit of advice everyone gives me.

Obedience.

And to be obedient, you must be humble.

Now you know why I have a problem with obedience.

Hahaha - I was close, but not quite! 😃

The author’s name of the St. Louis bio is George Rigault.

Glad your feeling better Brother JR, continued pray for you.

Peace

When I read the bolded part I thought you were still talking about the dog, until you said he ran the largest Catholic Press in the world 🙂

Glad to hear you’re feeling a little better, my prayers are with you.

Wow!! :juggle::

Thank you brother for being here. Prayers for your health and endurance.

This from your post really grabbed me:
