Of course it can.

Just think of the story in the Scriptures of the Centurion whose servant was dying and he met Jesus along the way. It is as follows:

5 And when he had entered into Capharnaum, there came to him a centurion, beseeching him, 6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, and is grieviously tormented. 7 And Jesus saith to him: I will come and heal him. 8 And the centurion making answer, said: Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof: but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed. 9 For I also am a man subject to authority, having under me soldiers; and I say to this, Go, and he goeth, and to another, Come, and he cometh, and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. 10 And Jesus hearing this, marvelled; and said to them that followed him: Amen I say to you, I have not found so great faith in Israel. 11 And I say to you that many shall come from the east and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven: 12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 13 And Jesus said to the centurion: Go, and as thou hast believed, so be it done to thee. And the servant was healed at the same hour.

***From this story it is clear to see that it was the faith of the centurion that moved the heart of Jesus to heal the servant. Faith was the key not distance.

It is not the prayer alone that heals, nor the proximity of the person praying to the one who is sick, but the power of God through the Holy Spirit. With Him there is no distance as He is omnipresent.

One day I took my younger daughter to the doctor because she was sick. I was awfully sick myself, and getting sicker as we were standing in line, waiting to check in. I could barely stand up. I was beginning to wonder how on earth I was going to drive her home–that’s how bad I felt.

Then, out of the blue, I felt immensely better. I still felt sick, but it was like a wave of relief came over me. It was so strong, it confused me. Why should I feel better so all of a sudden? I hadn’t taken any medicine or done anything.

Later, when I picked up my older daughter from school, she asked, “Mommy did you feel better today? My class prayed for you this morning.” I questioned her about the time this had happened, and it was the same time I had experienced this wave of relief.

Can prayer work from a distance? Of course it can. God isn’t limited by space.

Sirach14:
I remember a West Wing episode where some Congressman was holding up a multi-billion dollar budget bill in committee.

Josh: What does he want?

Toby: A $3 million NIH study . . .

Josh: Three million? Is that all? Give it to him!!

Toby: . . . three million dollars for an NIH study fo remote prayer. We can’t do it, it’s church and state.

Josh: I don’t care if he wants if for Communion wafers, give it to him!

I laughed so hard my side hurt – the fact that the show’s writers were no doubt trying to make a serious point about protecting the First Amendment from congressional yahoos just made it even funnier.

In real life it would have been money for stem cell research
