Prayers for my pregnancy

Can someone tell us the name of this test that shows so many false positives for Down Syndrome, etc.? Does anyone know why this test is so inaccurate?

I have heard of this before, and these false positives give pregnant women and their families so much anxiety that it’s a wonder the women don’t have a miscarriage.

Sometimes I think it would be better if they told the doctor to skip the test. Women do enough worrying about their unborn children, so why have a test that causes unnecessary worry?

Fortunately, years ago when I had my children, this test (whatever it is) had not been invented yet.

I have heard this test referred to as both the AFP test and a penta screen. It basically gives you a ratio for the chances that your baby will have a chromosomal defect. At my ob office, you will be flagged positive if your chance is greater than 1 in 100 so there are many false positives. I was told our chance was something like 1 in 30 for trisomy 18. We were then referred to a maternal fetal medicine specialist for further testing. It is an optional test. This is our seventh pregnancy and I have always gotten it since it is a noninvasive test that can provide some extra assurance that all is well. Unfortunately, the opposite is also true and it can cause much undue stress as well when you are referred for further testing. Age plays a big factor in this test so older moms are more likely to get false positives (I am 37)!!

When pregnant with my soon-to-be 19 year old daughter, I also had a positive result on an AFP test. Unfortunately, I wasn’t home on a Friday afternoon when they called and left the message for me. So I had to wait until Monday. I was told she might have Spina Bifida. We opted to have an amnio. Turns out she was fine. Several women wo had the test around the same time as me ended up with false positives. I didn’t even have the test for my next pregnancy. I think it’s horrible to make a pregnant woman worry about something that you aren’t completely sure of. No one needs that kind of stress!

Hello,

Please be strong and put your trust in God. Our sixth child had trisomy 18, which put our trust in God and carried our son Joshua to term. God blessed us with 5 precious weeks with our beautiful boy, i have never regretted choosing life for our son and would go through it all again for that time with him again. I did pray to St. Rita throughout my pregnancy and i feel she had interceded for Joshua.
God bless you and your precious child.

Eternal God , in whom mercy is endless,
and the treasury of compassion inexhastible ,
look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us ,
that in difficult moments we might not despair
nor become despondent , but with great confidence ,
submit ourselves to Your Holy Will ,
which is love and mercy itself . Amen

Memorare (Prayer to Our Lady)
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen

Indeed. I plan not to have these tests, even when I hit the magic age of 35. If we have a baby with a chromosomal problem, we’ll deal with it, and we don’t plan to weed out the “genetically unfit” in the womb. Women’s health care too often proceeds along lines that follow assumptions, like maybe you want to get rid of your defective offspring.

I am sorry; that sounds terribly self-righteous, and I have never been in the position of a parent whose child has a serious problem. My prayers are with you, and I hope your sweet little one (who is beloved of God) is healthy.

My aunt was told that it appeared one of her children had Down Syndrome. It was a false positive. You never know!

And, if your child does have a chromosomal abnormality, consider this video. I think it is really beautiful. It’s called “Dear Future Mom”.

The test was the Neuchal Translucency test. When I first posted, the results I had were based on the fluid behind the baby’s neck as seen on an ultrasound. I’ve never tested with my other 2 children, but the U/S indicated there might be a problem and so we want to be prepared to deliver in the best place possible and provide the best care to the baby that we can. Since my last post, we have received the first blood test result back. Normal risk for my age is about 1 in 500. Anything over 1/250 is considered high risk. Mine came back on Monday as 1/37 for Down syndrome after the combined ultrasound and blood test result, so that is considered Very High Risk. 😦

I was asked if I would want amnio or cvs, and I declined both because of the risk of miscarriage. I did take a new blood test called Harmony that detects 99% of chromosomal problems by extracting the fetal DNA from my blood. We will get those yes or no results next week. Please continue your prayers. Our baby doesn’t have a name yet (we don’t know boy or girl), but it will start with R. So please keep baby R and his/her family in your prayers.

Dear Lord please bless baby R and his/her parents. Please grant good health to this dear child. Please grant mother and baby will come safely through pregnancy and delivery. Thankyou Lord for hearing our prayers Amen

Dear Lord, please help this family and baby R. Thank you for the gift of life and thank you that this mother has chosen to avoid treatments that might put her at risk of miscarriage. Please give this family the grace they need at this time. Help their baby and give baby R good health. Help them continue to trust in you. Ease their worries. We know you can make everything all right and provide all the grace needed. We ask for your grace right now. Amen.

Holy Mother, please intercede for us.
Hold the sorrowful, strengthen the fearful,
mother the neglected, abused or forgotten,
give aid to all needing help or healing,
assist those who are sick, in pain or suffering,
be with those needing peace, console the lonely,
comfort the lost or hopeless, guard the unborn,
pray for those who are dying or who have died,
soften those with hardened hearts,
enlighten those who do not yet see truth,
help us be brave enough to let our hurt and anger go,
show us the way to do the right thing,
protect those who are in danger,
and guide us from every evil.
May all who keep your sacred commemoration
experience the might of your assistance.
Amen :gopray:
