Prayer for the Poor

For the poor and the oppressed, for the unemployed and the destitute, for prisoners and captives, and for all who remember and care for them, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.

Holy Michael the Archangel defend us in the day of battle.
Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,
by the Power of God,
thrust down to hell satan and all the wicked spirits,
who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession and was left forsaken. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand, a sorrowful sinner. Despise not my words, O Mother of the Word, but in your mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen

For the Poor and Marginalized

Dear Lord,

We lift up to you the poor and the marginalized.

We know that these are your cherished ones, that you are a God whose heart cries out for justice, that you are a God who longs to feed the hungry. We ask simply, Lord, that you give us your heart.

Fill us Lord with your compassion, give us your eyes to see, give us boldness and selflessness and wisdom, so that we too might cry out for justice and feed the hungry, so that your light might shine throughout the earth.

Lord, we especially life up the children among us who are poor and marginalized, finding themselves in circumstances they did not choose and helpless to change. We lift up AIDS orphans, children of war, children suffering abuse and neglect, children smitten with malnutrition an disease, lacking education, housing or the most basic of life’s necessities. Might they somehow come to know the love of their Creator, who knows each hair on their head and collects their tears.

Lord, you know every wretched tale. Every overwhelming statistic, you know personally, one by one. Thank you that one day you will make all things right through your Son, Jesus Christ.

Until that day, let us be tireless in doing what is good and what is right unto the least of these, knowing the Father’s love for them.
Amen.

Prayer to St. Claire

God of Mercy, You inspired Saint Clare with the love of poverty. By the help
of her prayers, may we follow Christ in poverty of spirit and come
to the joyful vision of your glory in the kingdom of heaven. We ask this
through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You
and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

“For He will deliver the needy when he cries, the poor also, and him who has no helper. He will spare the poor and needy and will save the souls of the needy.” -Psalm 72: 12-13

God the Father, we stand on Your promise that You will deliver the needy and the poor. As servants of the King, help us, Lord, as we strive to help the suffering poor. We acknowledge that without You, we are nothing and can do nothing without Your mercy and Your grace. Hear us O God; hear the cries of the poor; make haste and answer the prayers of Your children, in Jesus’ name.
Amen.

God the Father, I beg You to have great mercy on the poorest of the poor people around the world, but especially those within my country. God, help me to feed the poor in whatever ways I am able. Please help me to be diligent to their needs. Motivate me to pray for them often. And God, please show me the ways it would please you most to feed Your lambs. Amen.

JESUS, YOU SAID that the poor
would be with us always—and they are here.
On street corners in blistering heat and in tent cities.
They are here—
women and children,
young folks and old,
some displaced suddenly,
others who slid slowly into the abyss
that hides them from us.

Here they are, Jesus,
hungry and thirsty,
in need of a doctor and a bath,
living in desperation in a land of plenty
ragged and shoeless but criticized
for not pulling themselves up by their bootstraps.

Wake us up to their humanity, O God,
and shift our views from “us” and “mine”
to these who are thine. Amen.

Jesus said, “blessed are the poor in spirit.” We pray for the children, women, and men across the world who struggle each day to survive, pitted against economic conditions beyond their control. Give them strength to meet each day and hope for a different future.

Jesus said, “blessed are the peacemakers.” We pray for the people and groups of people campaigning for change to harmful economic policies. May the call for just trade, an end to debt, and more and better aid echo across the world.

Jesus said, “blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.” We pray for the leaders and politicians with the power to change things. We pray especially for the decisionmakers at the United Nations as they struggle with the question of poverty. Help them to take the side of the poor, to resist the voices of self-interest and complacency, and to make bold choices for the good of all people.

We ask all these things in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and friend of the poor.

Amen.

For Those Living with Poverty and Hunger

Our Loving Creator God, We bring before you this day the burden the whole world carries as it endures extreme poverty and hunger in every land. Stretch out your loving arms, we pray, to embrace the suffering women, men and children whose bodies, minds and spirits are shrinking before our very eyes. Help us to look, really look, with clear eyes and open hearts, to see the pain and hopelessness in their bewildered eyes. Kindle within each one of us a flame of love and purpose, and then Enable us to channel our love into action in every way possible and impossible. For this we pray. Amen.
