Prayers to Mary

This is wrong.

The Bible and Catholic theology are clear.

The Marian doctrines are Christological. You must understand this. As Christological doctrines they are there because of what we believe about God.
Will you please provide a reference to where this is taught by the Church? Thank you.
God CANNOT act against His nature because anyone with a modicum of philosophy in their background understands if God acts against HIs nature He ceases to be God. THis is impossible because God is both omnipotent and eternal. A protestant who says “God can sin” is, to be blunt, philosophically and theologically illiterate.
I agree that God cannot act against His nature. I never said He could. But I am confused about why you are so angry with me when you say that protestants who say “God can sin” are philosophically and theologically illiterate .
Catholic teaching about Mary is not something that is just “fitting.” Something that is acceptable, but protestant doctrine is okay too. NO.
God prepared a perfect vessel for Himself from the beginning. Have you heard of the Proto-evangelicum?
I don’t understand what you are attempting to say here.
There is one person who is both at the beginning of the Bible, and the end, and that is Mary.
Where did I even mention this?
Catholic doctrine is TRUTH.
Agreed. Where have I said it isn’t?
It isn’t just fitting that Mary be without sin. It is true, because of what we know about Jesus. It is because of Jesus that we believe what we believe about Mary. The Church stands on solid theological ground, and she proclaims absolute TRUTH, not just things that are fitting or acceptable.
I said that we believe what we be believe about Mary because of what we believe about Christ. Mary is sinless because of the fact that she is the person from whom Jesus entered the world.
Please provide a reference to official Church doctrine which states this. Thank you.
Your statement that me saying so makes me an embarassment to all Catholics is about the most offensive, mean spirited, uncivil, and poorly reasoned thing I have read here on CAF. I request an immediate apology.
I* never* stated that you are an embarrassment to all Catholics. If you can find where I stated that I will apologize.

You don’t think saying my statements were an embarassment to all Catholics was over the top?

Does “LittleSoldier” also have a problem with St. Augustine?

Even the modern Scott Hahn says: “Saint Augustine put the doctrine in its proper, familial context saying that it would be offensive against Jesus to say that His mother was a sinner.” (Hail Holy Queen 96).

This is exactly what I said. I said protestants who say Mary was born in sin attack Jesus, but they do not know what they do.

Apparently “LittleSoldier” finds Augustine offensive.

So be it.

I say again:

The Marian Dogmas are Christological. We believe what we believe about Mary because of what we believe about Christ. Mary is sinless because to say should would be born in sin is offensive to Christ, and arguably contrary to the nature of God.

I repeat my demand for an apology. Little Soldier didn’t just give us Church teaching. He or she gave her impression of it and tried to silence someone who, within the bounds of orthodoxy, made a statement in a way he or she couldn’t understand.
I did not try to silence anyone. Now you are accusing me of finding St. Augustine offensive. I love St. Augustine! And I never said anything about him in this thread. I don’t understand why you are accusing me of finding him offensive.

Umm…

Look… Augustine said that those who claim Mary was born in sin demean Christ. I said the same thing, and LittleSoldier called me an embarassment for saying it.

See the connection? Its a direct parallel. It fits the rules of logic and reason.
You said it as if she had read Augustine and disagreed with him. I highly doubt that is the case.
No I didn’t leave out a word. The sentence is pretty clear. Go back and re-read it.
Here is a copy and paste of your exact wording: “because to say should would be born” I find that confusing. “Should would”?
Did you understand the section I quoted from Hahn’s book? It says the same thing.

The Marian doctrines are Christological, and if you deny the Marian doctrines you ultimately detract from Christ. (another way of saying the same thing).
Again, I think you are missing the point.
Calling someone an embarassment for typing isn’t an attempt to silence them?
I think I see the problem. Nowhere did LittleSoldier call you an embarrassment (for typing or for any other reason). If you will re-read the post, you will see she called your *statement, *not *you personally *that.
I am glad you say the opposite. Is your understanding of the issue complete.
I think we may be talking past each other.
This is PURE conjecture. However, it is a valid form of argumentation, and for an apologist or theologian totally within bounds. But asking a question is NOT professing Church teaching.
Which is what I’ve been saying all along. I only said God had options.
Sure. He is making an interesting argument. It is one that he is making. It is an apologetic argument, surely not a theological statement, and it is an argument of his own invention I think (because I haven’t seen it anywhere else). Of course its possible I missed it.

But DO NOT confuse apologetics with Mariology or Church teaching. Apologists make arguments for the faith.
I’m not. I don’t understand why you think I am.
Poor Mr. Akin! You have taken him entirely out of context!

Look. Mr. Akin was making an apologetic argument and asking a theological question at the same time. It is clear from the context of his statement.

He wasn’t professing Marian dogma or Church teaching per se here!

My goodness! I essentially proposed an answer Jimmy Akin’s question and got smashed for it?
Do you really think I’m trying to “smash” you? I’m not, you know.

I didn’t take Akin out of context because I used what he said as an example. He spoke of a hypothetical situation, an option God could have chosen, and gave a reason why God could have chosen it—exactly what I (and I believe LittleSoldier too) have said. Nowhere did either of us say it is church teaching that God actually did other than what He chose to do (for some strange reason, you seem to think we have). God can choose to do whatever He pleases, and it could have pleased Him to bring Christ into the world in some other way.

This all boils down to the definition of “necessary.”

We’re saying it wasn’t necessary for God to bring Christ into the world the way He did* because nothing is impossible for God. He is therefore capable of bringing a person into the world in many different ways*. Look at it this way: The Father didn’t necessarily have to have Jesus even be born because He could have brought him into the world as an immediate adult. It is something God has the power and ability to do. Because God has the power and ability, it was an option. If He had had no options, then it would have been absolutely necessary for Him to do it the way He did because it would have been impossible for Him to do otherwise. That’s all.

You seem to be saying it was necessary because God would choose only the best way to do something, and since that is the way He chose, it was therefore necessary. (Again, correct me if I’m wrong). While what you’re saying is true (if, in fact, that’s what you mean) that’s a different definition of the word.

My definition: “necessary” means no other options were available
Your definition: “necessary” because God chooses best option (again, please correct me if I’m wrong)

I hope we’re okay with each other now. 🙂

I haven’t seen one instance of a protestant attacking Mary in this thread or in any other. I’m sorry, but I see your statement as an insult to every protestant and an embarrassment to every Catholic.
There is the quote…

I await your apology.

Also…
  1. Anyone who claims God can sin is theologically and philosophically illiterate. I won’t back down from that.
  2. Anyone who does not understand that Marian dogmas are Chrsitological doesn’t know the first thing about theology either.
I am being serious here.

You need to read more if you are going to start calling other Catholics embarrassments.

Some good books for starters:
  1. Hail Holy Queen by Hahn (very basic and introductory… but solid and educational)
  2. All Generations Shall Call Me Blessed by Manelli
  3. Both of Luigi Gambero’s books.
I took you task on Augustine because when I said that protestants who argue Mary was born in sin attack her and demean Christ, you said I was being offensive etc. etc.

BUT this is exactly what Augustine said!

If you love Augustine, why do you take a stance contrary to him regarding Mary in this thread?

Look, I don’t have a problem that you did this. Its okay to ask questions. But the way you addressed me is absolutely inappropriate and I DEMAND an apology.

I can think of things that are embarrassments to all Catholics, and neither I, nor my posts, qualify.

Good day.
