Praying a Rosary during Mass

I’m old enough to have attended Latin Mass during my childhood and teen years. I recall my mother praying the Rosary during Mass.

I attended a Latin Mass today and tried to pray a Rosary during the Mass and had a hard time meditating on the Rosary.

My son said one can pray a Rosary during the Latin Mass due to quiet time because the priest usually speaks very softly. This would be during a low Mass without singing or chanting.

I guess my question is, should I pray the Rosary during Mass?

I know I can’t say it during a NO Mass since the liturgy is said out loud.
 
Honestly, I don’t knwo why anyone would want to.
Our Lady will not be offended if you focus on her SON.
 
You can say it during the OF if you choose. You don’t have to make any replies. If no one says anything back sure it would be awkward but the priest doesn’t need the faithful to make a valid Mass.

The short answer is no, you should not pray the rosary during mass.

St. Zélie Martin (Saint Thérèse of Lisieux’s mother) used to go two masses each Sunday. The first to pay attention during mass and pray the mass quietly along with the priest.

Then, she would stay for the 2nd Mass to pray the rosary and do all her other prayers/devotions quietly during Mass.

My suggestion is to use St. Zélie Martin as example: pray the rosary during mass only if it’s your second mass of the day.

Praying the rosary during Mass can be a hindrance to participation. Nothing wrong with the rosary, of course, but as the old adage goes: there is a time and place for everything. Why not just pray the rosary after Mass? Or sometime later in the day?

I do pray a couple of Rosaries a day outside of Mass, sometimes in the Adoration Chapel.

I think the Lord was letting me know “No” since I was having difficulty meditating on either the Mass or the Rosary.
 
We have a Rosary group that meets right before Mass. I have seen that a few parishes I’ve been in.
 
I personally feel our Mother Mary would want you to focus on her son during mass. If there is a lol and quiet during the Latin mass focus on Jesus breaking the bread, the last supper, Jesus thinking about Judys during supper knowing he will be soon betrayed, think about Jesus during mass.
 
You don’t need to participate. We can all never respond to anything and the Mass is still valid. The priest can do Mass by himself. In the Old rite people didn’t say anything back only the altar servers did. I guess they want us more engaged now but it doesn’t make the Mass work if we do or don’t.
 
I agree with you. I just wondered if saying the Rosary would help me to focus more on the liturgy. Obviously not.
 
Well you know when you say a rosary you ARE focusing on her Son. . .
 
I’m not going to argue that because that’s not what I meant. The Mass is the premier prayer of the Church.
that is the point. Rosary is great in church, at Adoration even. But during Mass, we should be focused on the Mass.
 
We are certainly called to full and active participation in the liturgy.
What makes you think we’re not?
Ever taught Sunday school? Or Youth group. Catechists spend HOURS trying to explain why the Mass is important to young people, that it’s not boring, that we need to be present for each other as the one Body of Christ and that our prayers are UNITED with those of the priest. It’s not a show that we watch.
 
I think she was speaking of an EF. . . and in that case, it’s a slightly different thing. Focusing on the Mass in the EF can include practices like saying the rosary that we wouldn’t do in the OF. But that doesn’t mean that they’re wrong or off-putting. Honestly, if you get the chance, do read "Noble Beauty, Transcendent Holiness’. . .the author explains things a lot better than I do about the differences.
 
I guess that’s why I don’t go.
I can’t imagine not being completely focused on t e sacrifice.
I do my devotions outside of Mass.
 
I think it’s inappropriate to pray the Rosary during Mass. The Rosary is my favorite devotional- I have prayed it every single day for nearly two years- but I don’t think that the Mass is the time for anything besides the Liturgy.
