How does one pray in this manner. I know that God is a spirit but that’s all I know on the subject.

I am not sure what you mean, but the “Praying in the Spirit” part is an important practice of the Charismatic Movement. There are some past threads on this site that deal with Charismatics. You might want to review these.

Rom 8:14 “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.”
Rom 8:16 “The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
Rom 8:26 “the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings.”
Praying in the Spirit and the Truth = Praying in tongues.
For those that can not see the connection, pray that God will enlighten your hearts & minds so that you will no longer continue in your ignorance.

At Mass, we join ourselves to the sacrifice of Calvary that is offered to God the Father. We are in union with Jesus’ sacrifice by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The Mass is the highest prayer that we can offer to God, and we can only offer up a sacrifice that is pleasing to God if we are united in Spirit and truth to that sacrifice. The prayer of contemplation can only be done by praying in Spirit and truth. When we meditate on the mysteries of the Rosary, God’s grace opens up the mysteries that we are meditating on because we pray the Rosary in Spirit and truth.
The Sacrament of Baptism brings to the Christian the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Baptism immerses us into the death and resurrection of Christ. Because we are united by Baptism to the resurrected Lord, we become partakers of the divine nature of God.

Thanks for this insight and for your other post w/ the list invoking the Spirit…I truly was of the mindset that it was praying in tongues…which I do occasionally do.

Yes, I agree that the Mass is the greatest prayer we have as Catholics, but all other devotions are mere devotions. When we surrender to the Holy Spirit we allow Him to work His will in our lives. We do not surrender to contemplation nor meditation on the rosary, but only to God - Father Son & Spirit.
Devotions & contemplative prayers lead us to a closer relationship with God, speaking in the Spirit is God’s Spirit seaking for us.
Rom 8:16 “The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
In SPIRIT, the HOLY SPIRIT bears witness, speaks for us. The is praying in Spirit & in Truth. God is Truth. His Spirit prays for us.

Another way is by using the Jesus Prayer, ‘Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.’
The way of prayer taught by this book is endorsed by the Catechism of the Catholic Church, promulgated by Pope John Paul II:
2667 This simple invocation of faith developed in the tradition of prayer under many forms in East and West. The most usual formulation, transmitted by the spiritual writers of the Sinai, Syria, and Mt. My understanding is one of two ways: first is praying in the direction God is obviously leading and the other is praying in tongues. You know you need to pray for something but you’re not sure what. The Holy Spirit knows and leads the prayer even if you don’t know exactly what you’re praying for.

We cannot even speak the name of The Lord unless moved by The Holy Spirit, nor can we even think it since thought precedes speech. Undoubtedly there may also be special gifts of The Spirit such as praying in tongues which is also mentioned in the New Testament I think.

I’ve prayed once or twice in this manner of being led. One prayer erupted from inside me and had so totally bypassed my brain that it scared me at first and I didn’t even know it was a prayer except in hindsight. And that’s exactly what it was-a petition from deep inside for something I wanted-the salvation of another person- but didn’t even realize I wanted until it was prompted to come out. The tongues that I’ve witnessed I don’t believe have anything to do with the Spirit although they were purported to be. But I’ve heard some awesome sounding testimonies about tongues on some threads here at CAF.

My husband was recently in the hospital for seven weeks. During that time he went into complete renal failure. When we took him to the hospital on that Monday - he was lucid and pretty clear headed. The hospital chaplain - a priest - met him in the ER(the waiting room even) and gave him Eucharist. By Tuesday, it was pretty clear he was not going to be with us as he was fast slipping into - well he ended up with only his heart and mind working for four days by that time the next week. As he entered this time beginning on Monday, in his pain and suffering, when he could not communicate (I believe he had a visit from Our Lady - Blessed Mother becuase of some conversation he was having - then I heard him say loudly - ‘God I told you I can’t do this by myself’) he was going fast - yet, he was always in prayer. One could see on his lips and hear by listening closely that he was either praying the Our Father, the Jesus Prayer, or he would be praying in tongues. As they moved him to MICU our deacon - my husband is also a deacon - came by and laid a small icon of the Theotokos on him. We could not find it, and somehow, he had gotten it under his gown, and if anyone tried to remove it, he would moan loudly - he could not talk - yet he knew if someone touched his icon.
Well, I loose track of time, as I ended up in the hospital myself. Anyway, at whatever point it was, after four days of not being able to communicate with him, the Lord sent three priests in the same day to annoint him and pray over him. That morning, the first annointed and prayed. Then, in the early afternoon, second one prayed that God would be merciful - that if he was to live his life as a vegtable that God would take him home right then, if not restore his life. Then, our priest came in the later afternoon. He annointed him and prayed, by the time father had finished, my husband was trying to pray the prayers with him. That evening, our kids (not really kids 23 - 32 years old) were in his room and his eyes opened. He followed them around the room with eyes. He had been ventilated becaue of too much carbon dioxide in his body - his blood gases began stablizing. The third day after that, his kidneys started working again. Well, it has all been nothing but miraculos - he has been home for a week and half now, and is getting stronger and we belive will be stronger than he was before all this started.
I tell you all this, to say, that though he could not pray consciously he was always in prayer. Now thanks be to God that we don’t have to go through all of that to pray, but to pray in Spirit and in Truth is to always have our mind and souls in an attitude of prayer. If we do, then no matter what the circumstances, the Holy Spirit will pray through us and for us, when we ourselves can no longer pray.

Such insistence on praying in tongues, usually without interpretation, has turned many against the charismatic movement. I was amazed by the anger displayed in another thread. However, let’s look at what Saint Paul had to say:
The gifts of the Holy Spirit are given as the Lord wills, so each Christian may exhibit different gifts:
How about asking the Lord to release your intended gift so that you may use it for the sake of His Kingdom?
