When one considers what this Gift of the Holy Spirit did for the Early Christians, …
would you use this Prayer language if you had it ?

do you have it ?

do you use it ?

do you recommend it ?

just wondering what you know about it,

gusano

Yes to all. And while doing this I raise my hands in the air… then side to side… then up and down, repeat. I properly yell “Alleluia!” and then get back to the liturgy. http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon14.gif

In truth… I know little about this. I don’t concern myself with it.
Why …
Don’t you concern yourself with it ? …

You must concern yourself with it enough to at least
mock it … a little . 😃

The Peace of Christ to you,

gusano

Please clarify, so we can underestand. . If you do not concern yourself about the praying in tongues during Liturgy, what was your answer about?
God bless you,
Teresa

Praying in tongues reminds me of going to an Assembly of God church while I was growing up. This is a protestant “thing” - I’ve never seen it in a Catholic Church and hope I never do. I’m not sure the people I saw speaking in tongues were genuine but they sure did love the attention. 😉

If the Church didn’t mind the speaking in tongues they might as well allow a priest to yell (while damning everyone to hell if they don’t change their ways), cry, pound the pulpit and dance crazily. Oh and don’t forget there would be a need to have a choir in the background clapping while moving side to side, people would be in the aisles dancing while thinking to themselves “Now people REALLY know I’m devoted to God”.

Lastly, church wouldn’t be church without calling the sick, poor, depressed, lactose intolerant, hungry, full, those who speed in their cars, those who don’t speed in their cars, etc. up front to be slain in the spirit!

Lastly, we wouldn’t be able to let the congregation go without calling the sick, poor, depressed, lactose intolerant, etc. up front to be slain in the spirit!
I think our friend Lorrie summed up my response.

Thank God someone else is on the same page as I am when it comes to this topic. The whole idea of praying/speaking in tongues gets under my skin (obviously). I guess its just because of what I was raised around. Bottom line? From what I saw it was showboating, plain and simple.

Hi Lorrie,
Yes, I have been to those too.
That is not what I am referring to.

Maybe these folks have not discovered THE ALTAR and He who is there.
Maybe they have not yet discovered 1 Cor. 14: 2
Maybe they have not yet discovered Heb. 12: 28
Maybe they overlooked 1 Cir. 13: 1

Yes," attention seeking" can replace TRUTH AND LOVE …if one seeks attention.
But if one loves The Spirit of Truth…
The Spirit of Truth will lead us THROUGH all the immitations
into Worship that is IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH.

Thanks for bringing it up

Peace,

gusano

I’m sure these people we refer to have all read the scriptures in your above post, its all about interpretation and who is guiding them to intemperate them a certain way.

Its pretty neat because my mom just recently came back to the Church after being in the Assembly of God church for 20 some odd years. She’s read the Bible cover to cover about 30 times. We were talking on the phone last night and she was so excited to read me a certain scripture. She was excited because she “got” what it was saying. Now this is a woman who is smart and has dissected and analyzed the Bible over and over.

One may ask, “Why didn’t she “get” what that certain scripture was saying 10 years ago?” Because now she’s seeing things in a new light, she’s being guided by the true Church of God. This is what most protestants are lacking. They’ve probably discovered the scriptures, but haven’t actually discovered their true meaning.

WOW ! again Lorrie,
Sounds Like your Mom and you have tapped into one of God’s tenderest “nerves”
I mean in what "He hides from the learned and the clever…
and what He reveals to the merest of children."

Matt. 11: 25-28

The Holy Ghost. Let us not forget about the Lord and Giver of Life.

I always take it as they all go hand in hand. Meaning by speaking of one you are speaking of them all.

Much can be said about the subject. I just added my (name removed by moderator)ut because, it seems to me the Holy Ghost is sometimes forgotten, or pushed to the side.

This is true. I’ll be the first to admit that I tend to rarely mention the Holy Spirit in point. I pray that I never take it for granted.

I kinda blew through the posts but, there is such a thing as a charismatic Catholic Mass. I suggest that the person that started this thread, find one in their community. That is the place to express themself in that matter. Otherwise that manner of expression is not in order.

The gift of tongues ( which in my opinion is simply gibberish) is the least of the gifts and Paul made that clear. He said it only builds up the individual and does not build up the community of the church. It should definitely kept out of Mass.

Pope John Paul II was invoved with the charismatic community. Here is a link.

I think that one must look at the track record of a person.
Yes, many people were involved in the Charismatic Community when it was in vogue. Mother Angelica was as well.
However, as will all trends, if it does not become a lifestyle, it is just that, a trend.

I don’t mind at all if someone wants to belong to a Charismatic Community. I do have a problem when people want to make it the norm of a “Catholic Community” when the congregation does not feel it.
If all of us would be kind and consider different tastes in the liturgy, we would not have the infighting. Bring a Charistmatic Mass to any church but leave one “Historically Catholic” Mass there as well. In that way, one can see the needs and wants of the parish, not insist that they must feel Christian while ignoring Catholic tradition.

I thought that speaking in tongues meant that someone, somewhere could understand it. Not speaking in gibberish but, for example, if the person next to me started speaking in Aramaic, I would know the Holy Spirit is upon them. (not like I understand Aramaic but I think I would know the sound, thanks Mr. Gibson)
