Praying the Hail Mary

I was reared in a family where the rosary was recited every night after supper. The mysteries were never mentioned and we concluded the rosary with the Act of Contrition. It can become a rote exercise, a means of simply “doing devotions” rather than praying…
I’m glad it is not only me!
I was beginning to think I was in the twilight zone or something, like my catholic upbringing was different from everyone elses.
Thanks for sharing that.

I didn’t grow in knowledge of truth and I don’t think it sanctified me either.
That is the reason for the question.
But you have no real idea as to how GOD viewed your faithful recitation of the rosary, do you?

BTW, I note that you have kinda skipped over the fact that the rosary is not required…would you like to comment on that?

In my post above, I asked how you came to such a misunderstanding…

:rotfl: LOL! No, you don’t understand.

The Rosary does not replace the Bible for Catholics, but both the Rosary and the Bible are different ways of meditating on the Word of God. If you come right down to it, the Rosary is somewhat dependent on the Scriptures because both the prayers and the mysteries/meditations are largely taken right from Scripture.

I think if you eschew the either/or mindset you seem to be laboring under, you may find you understand the Catholic Faith a little better. With Catholics, when it comes to the good things God gives us to grow closer to him and to deepen our understanding of him, it’s not either/or, but both/and! 👍
It was heisenberg who said the rosary was the bible in post#28.
That is not the catholic view?
I expect the apologists on this forum are giving me the official catholic teaching. My mistake.

I already knew the rosary is not required for salvation.
How could it be?

I believe he meant that since the Rosary meditates on most of the significant events of the Gospel, that it can be used as a Bible study.

Now I am understanding the Catholic position a little better.
The rosary is your bible. Now I understand. Thanks.
More sniping and bitterness.

Clearly, you did not understand what the poster was saying, and you took the opportunity to take another cheap shot.

He said “abbreviated”, didn’t he?

Meditation on the mysteries of the rosary was very useful to a populace that was illiterate and unable to afford expensive handwritten bibles. Stained glass windows and statues in Churches served the same teaching purpose.
On a side note, I never contemplated any mysteries while reciting the rosary. I was never taught to do so. Maybe that is why it never became my bible.
Since you now acknowledge that you were not taught properly, perhaps you might reconsider a wholesale re-examination of the Catholic faith which you obviously misunderstood before you abandoned it.

Hope this helps. :tiphat:

This explains why it never made any sense to you. The Mysteries are the essential element - everything else is just timing devices for the Mysteries, and to keep the “wandering” part of your mind busy so that you don’t get distracted while contemplating the Mysteries.

(It would be like opening your Bible and turning each page after a short interval of silence, but not actually reading the words on the page.)
We have been over all of this with her in another thread. She knows this but simply can’t accept it.

Contemplating mysteries or not, I still wouldn’t pray the rosary.
It puts something before God. I don’t do that anymore.

Rosary can be used as a bible study?
You’re meditating on the subtle messages and complex meanings of Jesus’ teachings and actions. You can either do that while reading the words or while saying a prayer.

If the Rosary puts something before God, then I contend than so does Sola Scriptura, since you’re taking your own interpretations of scripture over the historical ones (hint: sola scriptura was nowhere to be found in the early Church).

Often, the student needs the lesson repeated several times before he can finally understand it. (One rule I’ve been given is that the most essential information should be repeated at least seven times over the period of a course of studies.)

Yes. In fact, it could be the basis for a series of 20 Bible lessons; one for each of the 20 Mysteries. 👍
You mean you open the bible and read it as you are saying the hail Mary?
Personally I can’t read and pray at the same time

Possibly. Some people just rock at multitasking like that.

Personally, I would try to read all of the passages relating to the meditation before I pray the Rosary so the exact words are fresh in your mind.

Yeah, the Apostle’s Creed, the Our Father, and the Glory Be can do that.

Then there’s all that meditation on the life of Christ while praying the words of the Angel spoken to Gabriel in the Hail Mary.

And taking time out of one’s busy day to spend a few minutes contemplating these things sure diminishes God in our lives.

Yeppers, I can see how He would be very upset by all of this.

I often notice the same thing.
I have to repeat things over and over and over.
Sad part is most times they never get it.

Actually I memorized the Bible passages before, and I just think of them in my mind while I am praying the Rosary. But you can also read along in the Bible, if you haven’t got them memorized yet - there’s nothing wrong with that.
