Where do Catholics find it biblical to pray to saints. what keeps placing the saints they pray to into a category of idols since they are worshiped or prayed to?

along side of god

It is not specifically discussed in the Bible. There is nothing in the Bible to either specifically endorse of condemn the practice- at least, on the surface. It seems to me, though, that the practice is justifiable through logical application of Biblical principles.

Please look at these biblical verses. Romans 8:27, Ephesians 6:18, Revelation 5:8, Revelation 8:4, 1 Kings 13:6, Psalms 148.

This shows its biblical.

Your in the wrong forum with this thread, too. You need to be in the Apologetics forum. THIS is the Philosophy forum.

Could you possibly explain “logical application of Biblical principles?”

(Edited) Someone offered a list of verses. What are your thoughts on those?

Romans 8:27, Ephesians 6:18, Revelation 5:8, Revelation 8:4, 1 Kings 13:6, Psalms 148.

These are the verses the catholics can prove.

Jesus, our High Priest and perfect example to follow in the faith, prayed on the mountain and conversed with Moses and Elijah. This confirms that:
  1. the saints are alive in heaven
  2. they ARE able to hear and perceive the world
  3. they ARE able to pray and commune with us.
  4. it is morally acceptable that we are allowed for our prayer to include the saints (if Jesus can do it, it MUST be moral)

Prayer does not necessarily equate to worship, and no true catholic worships the saints. Ergo, if i get what you’re asking correctly, this question is a moot point.

As you might ask a Christian friend to pray for you, so we ask these Chiristians who have died to pray for us. They have proven to be faithful children of God.The saints aren’t worshipped. They are seen as a good example. In the gospels, many times others asked Jesus’ help on behalf of their family, or servant, or friend if He would grant healing to the one on whose behalf they asked.

You asked what I meant by “logical applications of Biblical principles”- I mean that, if we learn “x” from the Bible, and we can easily deduce that “x” leads to “y” (“x” and “y” being ideas, beliefs, or practices), then “y” is Biblical, even if it is not expressly stated in the text.

Yes that can be true but… how many times do people (mormons, jahovahs witness, even some Christians and Catholics) find a “y” which is “out of context” or in other words not what “x” necessarily meant. For example mormons believe in three different stages within heaven when deeper insight shows that the bible is refering to the earth as one, space as another, and heaven as the third level.

Where in the bible did Jesus pray to the saints? Why would he pray to someone lower then him? Where does it say they communicate with us from heaven?

Romans 8:27 (The Message)

26-28Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.

I do not see any reference to saints in this verse. If you could help with this if you do see something I am missing

Ephesians 6:18 (New International Version)
18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

It says to pray FOR the saints. I see a big difference between praying TO someone (Jesus) and praying FOR someone (friend, family, etc)

**We only ask our heavenly family members, because those in heaven are our families, to add their prayers to ours in making requests of God.

Do you not ask your fellow Christians to add their prayers to yours…that is, to pray for your intentions? We ask our fellow Christians in heaven as well as those on earth, to join their prayers with ours **

who prays to saints? I don’t, however because they’re in heaven separated from sin, and united to the body of Christ, I’ll ask them to pray for me all day long. Kind of like I’m going to pray for you that your honest heart that loves Christ is led to the fullness of his truth! But I, unlike the saints am a lowly sinner.

Revelation 5:8 (New International Version)
8And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers OF the saints.

These are the prayers of saints not to

First off I want to apologize if I am coming across condesending or angry. I know messeging cant show emotions along with what Im saying but I am just trying to search deeper into what I believe and what others believe.

Along with the ephesians verse I already posted about the bible also does refer to all believers as “saints”. So could this verse mean to pray for all other believers?
