I was against it for a long time. I spoke out about it. I said it was profane, disgusting, and unholy. I lamented the death of gilded pages marked out carefully with finely dyed linen ribbons, the death of sewn bindings and of supple goatskin covers.

But with an increase in cell phone reimbursement from my employer, Santa saw fit to bring me an iPhone for Christmas - my first smartphone. I put the Divine Office app from Surgeworks on it of course. Today I listened to the midday prayer through the bluetooth headset, reciting each word just a half second behind the narrator and…

I have spoken but did not understand;
things too marvelous for me, which I did not know.
Therefore I disown what I have said,
and repent in dust and ashes.

(Job 42:3,6)

I still won’t bring it to Mass, but let’ just say that I get it now. 👍

I totally agree. I have tried it a couple of times… But then there’s all the emails and texts and–ooo look internet browser-- and those game notifications… Its hard enough to pray on my own lol.

Yea my ADHD would kick in no way that I could use it and not have something distract me. But I will say I see nothing wrong with it and if the church was using like iPads to go green or something that had all the other stuff turned off than that would be fine with me. I feel kinda wrong saying that.

I love love LOVE the iPieta app, and listen to the Rosary on my commute on most days on my fave Rosary app. And I have been known (like yesterday morning) to pray the Divine Office with my Breviarium Meum app after daily mass in front of the tabernacle. Luckily, I have a very understanding (and tech-savvy) priest. Heck, one time in the middle of a weekday homily about the Martyrology, the priest pulled his iPhone from his cassock pocket and read the martyrology from his iPhone on the pulpit.

Then again, this is the same priest that when I started talking about the woes of the world like people having distorted priorities by buying too many shiny things with apples on them, he looked down at his iPhone, gently petted it and said, “It’s okay, she didn’t mean it.”

One of my next “splurge” purchases is going to be the bookbook case for my iPhone so I can be a bit more subtle about my iPhone usage in the chapel.

👍

I downloaded it early on in my journey. Sure beats flipping back and forth through a breviary.

I also have Brevmeum, which is the app that corresponds to the 1960/1962 office on diviniumofficium.com.

I visited a lay Dominican meeting and there were a couple of folks reading the office from their iPhones.

If you haven’t already checked out iPieta for iPhone, you’re missing a lot.

I need the app from latinnounderstandium.com.

LOL. Well in brevmeum, you can select to have English display side by side with the Latin.

And before anyone steps in with “The English is not approved”, I know. But at least you know what’s being said, if your Latin isn’t awesome, even if the translation may not be completely correct to the “T”.

Actually, the first songs I bought were O Salutaris and Tantum Ergo by the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia so that I could learn the tunes. Yep… Latin! 👍

The deacon or priest often asks me to lead the songs while he exposes, incenses and reposes the Blessed Sacrament and I do butcher them pretty good.

Now I’m thinking that I might play them with the bluetooth headset and just sing along with the good Sisters from Nashville singing in my ear. I might try that.

Ooooh, that’s gonna make them mad. How could you?

That’s almost as bad as that polka Mass or the video of Wierd Al Yankovich chanting Preface II to the tune of Another One Rides the Bus over in that other thread.

In all seriousness, I prefer a book too. There is something about putting a Bible or a leather bound copy of Christian Prayer down on a table. The book itself claims the space for God. It is clear to everyone present what the book is - it makes Christians smile and makes non-Christians uncomfortable just being in the same room.

But I used the phone with a bluetooth headset - a top of the line headset given to me by my employer. I was at my desk and decided to pray the midday prayer from LoTH. Two clicks and then I just closed my eyes for ten minutes or so and listened to the audio. It was wonderful. I followed what was being said and said the words quietly to myself just a moment behind the narrator. It was wonderful to just click, close my eyes, and suddenly be in the heart of the prayer of the Church.

My point is, that with the headset, one can lock the screen on the phone, sit still, and just listen. It was wonderful.

But yes, there is something holy about a fine book dedicated to God. I will never give that up.

I have a lot of apps, but I prefer paper. I do enjoy the narration features on my Bible app for long drives, but it requires internet connection.

And then there’s this:

You know Catholic Answers has a podcast right?

I’d like to remind everyone that the Holy Father has an Ipad and posts twitter updates from it 😃

What’s the Father’s twitter username??? I would totally follow him. 🙂

Just realized how packed that statement is with double meanings lol.
