I was intending to pray the Rosary and do a good hour or so of prayer and meditation when something happened that made me mad and I said the Lord’s name in anger, and at the same time I managed to disrespect my Dad. 😦 I know that I’ve sinned, and when I said Jesus’ name like that I felt really bad and I don’t feel like I can pray after saying.

Now I know that it’s ok to pray in a state of sin (there’s prayers before Confession and stuff), but it just doesn’t feel right. If mortal sin technically separates your relationship with God, would praying be pointless until I have Confession (the soonest opportunity I’ll get is on Saturday and I don’t want to wait that long to be able to pray again).

So, is saying Jesus’ name in vain a mortal sin? And if it is, is it ok for me to pray the Rosary?

If it were me (and it has been on many occasions, I wont hesitate to add), I would say an act of perfect contrition with the sincere intention of going to confession at my next opportunity. And then I’d follow up and go to confession. I believe God hears all prayers and knows when our hearts are truly sorrowful and contrite.

Hi!

IMHExperience
Love of God and sin are mutually exclusive. If you make a good act of contrition, resolve to go to confession, and pray, you’ll already be removed from self-love towards love of God, which destroys sin.
And the Holy Spirit has already moved you to pray, so why resist?

And the Blessed Mother is the “refuge of sinners” (Litany of Loreto). Don’t wait - old clubfoot wants you to hang back- don’t wait- pray. Immediately after any sin- as St Therese of Lisieux encouraged-God can’t resist a repentant sinner.

If a friend does something offensive to you, would you want that person to stop speaking to you? It is absolutely okay to pray after sinning. An act of contrition might be a good place to start, or even just a quick, “I’m sorry Lord.” Any spiritual force that wants to you stop praying after sin is not of God. Please pray.
