It seems that whenever someone talks about “pre-Vatican II days,” what they’re really talking about is the US in the 1950s and early 1960s. Given the polarized feelings that exist regarding this period of time, how many Catholics feels about “pre-Vatican II” will be colored by their opinions of the 1950s. The pre-Vatican II Church can refer to medevial cathedrals, missions in Africa, hidden Christians in Japan, the Chinese rites controversy, Jesuits preaching to Native Americans, the martyrdom of St. Charles Lwanga, etc. But generally, this diversity is not what’s being discussed.

The assumption seems to be that the teachings and the liturgical practices are often presumed not to have changed since the Council of Trent until that pesky Vatican II threw everything up for grabs. True some elements of Church architecter are sometimes touched on, but rarely the happenings good, bad, or wonderful that took pl;ace in various parts of the world in the lives of ordinary people. 🙂
