Predestination

Okay so this so-called “atheist” I work with asked me if I believe in the freedom of choice, and I said yes, and he says well how can you if you believe in Jesus and God, because according to him all Christians believe in predestination ( when he uses the term it is in its extreme form like Calvinism ) so that no matter what choice I make in my life it isn’t a real choice because God already had it planned according to his will, now I know only some protestants believe this, but what is the church’s understanding on predestination?
