i love how when anyone on here mentions anything with a little bit of charity and compassion we are automatically labeled a “liberal.” this thread has nothing to do with political standings. and i dont see this as protecting young people, i personally see it as sheltering them and then hiding anyone whos ever made a mistake away. what if you dont see them it never happened? its happening. the approach needs to change or the abortions will continue. why not give them a better option, like this school mentioned in the above article? why not give them a chance at the choice of life being a good one?
Ashly,

Those of us who supoport the school are not lacking in charity or compassion. We just reject the idea of charity as our secular culture defines it.

We have to learn that not every proscription is unchraitable and not every *liberal *concession is authentic charity.

Personally i think its a far better alternative than the hate they are being beaten with in their original schools. unfortunately Catholics like this Sister Rose are few and far between when it comes to unwed teen mothers. These girls need positive Catholic influences in their life like her, not others who label them as sinners and cant find it in their hearts to forgive.
Ashly, what you wrote above is uncharitable and really falsely accuses your brothers and sisters in Christ. No one has said the girl should not be forgiven or that she should wear a big S for sinner. The arguments posted here do not reflect what you are saying above.

Why are you equating the schools policy with hate?

Because the schools policies are in fact hateful. im sorry thats just my opinion from the experiances i have had in my life with this issue. im not stating it as a fact, if it comes across that way i apologize. however it is my opinion that the schools like to hide away these girls like they dont exists or humiliate and punish and berate these poor girls. rarely do you ever hear of the boys, just the girls. Why? because the girls have the large belly to show the evidence. so thats why they were punished. i find in my experiance that a certain generation of Catholics are in fact hateful, unkind and uncharitable to unwed teen mothers. they treat them with utter disgust. this is just the experiance i have had.

I am sorry for your experiences. I think the male and female should accept equal culpability. These issues should be seen from all perspectives. We all agree the mother should be supported and loved. How that is done will depend on circumstances. We, also, should be aware that these issues are greater than just the ones most intimately involved. This is particularly true in a school setting.

There are many facets to consider.

Hateful is a strong word that leads to polarization and division in the one Boby of Christ. Maybe you should choose you words more carefully if you wish to enagage in constructive (and charitable) dialogue. Just my opinion.

Brad,

I agree completely, this is issue is more about the school, then it is about the girl. That is why the girl still received her diploma, she earned it. No student earns the right to attend graduation, that is a school decision…the school does not even have to hold a ceremony.
The school protected the student body and its own Catholic standing by telling the girl not to attend.

Lisa,

I often agree with you, but not here. What does abortion have to do with this discussion?

The news blurb does not give enough information to come to the conclusion you seemed to have come to.

Brad,

A Priest can give any penance that is within his justirisdiction to give. Matters of school administration do not lie within his jurisidiction, unless the Priest is part of the school administration…if he was then he has every right to apply that penance.

As I said in the previous message, the action taken to tell the girl not to attend is more about the school, then the girl…she received her diploma, which is all that any student can expect, providing they make the requirements. Attending the graduation is not a right, it can be revoked by school authorities.

abortion has a lot to do with this issue. treatment such as this is what leads a lot of girls into the clutches of Klanned parenthood. wether its from school, church or home being shamed like this and treated so cruely is why so many girls are afraid to keep their babies.

Tarashly,

I agree, they covered themselves by taking proper action.

As I posted before…Do you have any evidence that “banning” the girl because she was pregnant was the only reason or the chief reason? The news report does not give that level of detail. Your assertion is pure speculation. We have no idea what discussions took place or what role the girl’s previous behavior played in the school desicion.

Nonsense. One can say that anything made one commit an evil act.

Tarashly,

Fornication is what leads girls to get abortions. If young men and women ceased having sex, abortion would not be a problem among our young–that is a fact, not opinion.

The sin of fornication is not lessened because a person chooses not to do a worse sin by aborting/mudering their baby.

Amen. it is hateful to punish the mother and not the father. Shame, shame, shame.

no they took completely improper action to try and hide the pregnant girl. afterall this is a Catholic school, they dont have those problems right? or at least it seems they dont because the visibly pregnant girls are hidden away out of sight.

Tarashly,

They upheld the faith…very simply really. There mistake was allowing the boy/father to attend.
