I’m of the school of thought that given the scandal the school has caused with their actions, if they have some more information that has not been public, they should come forward with it. certqinly the media has repeatedly asked them for comment.

But to my friends who say the school should be trusted to do the right thing against all evidence to the contrary and has the right not to disclose whatever they don’t wish to disclose, then I would say for all we know the girl is married to her classmate and the father of her child.

Both sides can have “secret” information.

Tarashly,

They upheld the faith…very simply really. There mistake was allowing the boy/father to attend.
And therefore by their admitted mistake, they DID NOT uphold the faith.

Do you have any proof that the school had any other reason? your defense of the schools behavior is pure speculation.
My defense of the school is based on reason and the concept of submission to legitimate authority, not to mention the student acted out in a manner that hardly leads one to presume she is innocent in other matters when she blatantly defies authority.

I am not speculating. I am asking how you draw a conclusion based on limited knowledge?

Unreasonable. The school is the authority and the school did not act out in an unjust display as the student did. The school may be doing a service to the girl by not revealing more of her case and they may be bound legally and morally not to reveal more.

Untrue. We do not have all the information. You are making charges without merit.

Possibly, but we do not have all the information, only a limited news report.

Katherine,

You are correct when you say the boy/father should have been included in the school’s actions, I have said that all along. Yet, the school had not choice but to take action in such obvioulsy publicly commited sin. To do nothing would simply mean the school is not Catholic at alll. This is really more about the school giving a message to the student body, then it is to the pregnant girl…and she showed the state of her mind with her defiance.

If one of my kids ever get into this situation I would demand that the school take appropriate action.

fix,

You are quite correct, it is very possible that the boy was told not to attend…we just do not know.

What ever helps you sleep at night. i SERIOUSLY doubt that this school acted with this girls best interest in mind. i think they tried to cover their hides and put on a front that they dont have any of these problems. its the “holier than thou” garbage that makes me sick. im sorry i mean no offense. i will admit my emotions play a lot into this with what happened to my sister the one time i took her to mass with me when she was visibly pregnant. i was so ashamed of my church that day. it broke my heart to see my sister cry after mass and her ask to leave as soon as possible because of the looks and whispers she received. there are people at that church that i will no longer associate with, people i assumed were my friends, whom i assumed were good compassionate Catholics. im not sure who was more humiliated, my sister or myself. it disgusts me even thinking about it. i was so ashamed to be associated with that type of people. Thank God i have my faith, otherwise i would have walked out of that church never to return.

As **fix **has pointed out, there are not enough details to know the specific reason for “banning” the pregnant student. In all likelyhood, the school is acting in the best interest of the student and the entire school body, feelings and personal sentiment aside. Lets not fall into the “sin” of presumption.

As Trelow has previously posted on a parallel thread an excert from a Catholic school student/parent handbook that would indicate this:

From their handbook.

Student Pregnancy

If a female student becomes pregnant, the Guidance Department and Administration must be notified immediately. The student will be required to bring a doctor’s note indicating her time of delivery. Medical safety, psychological wellbeing, and social issues will be taken into consideration when deciding how long a student will attend classes or extracurricular activities, if/when she needs to begin home schooling, and when she may return to school after the delivery of her child. Both the female student and the father of the child (if he attends St. Jude Educational Institute) and their parents/guardians will meet with the Principal, and Guidance Counselor to determine the need for counseling and special support.

i dont understand why one wouldnt take it upon themselves to take appropriate actions as a parent in what should be a family matter.

It is nquite impossible to live in this world today and hide from the realities of sexual activity among teens…it is a well known fact. Yet, just because everyone is aware of those facts, that does not mean we are supposed to accept it.

Jesus was counter cultural. So was that school by sending a message to the student body that fornication is a sin.

That is just it, it is not solely a family matter. These actions have deeper repercussions. All our acts, good and bad, public and private impact the mystical body of Christ. Schools and the like have a duty.

His name was printed in the program produced by teh school. Her’s was not.

Tarashly,

Fear not, I would take swift and very appropriate action if one of my kids did something like that. However, Catholic schools have a role in this matter as well and if they did nothing I would pull my kids from that school. I would not pay for private “CATHOLIC” education if the school refused to defend the faith.

Now your getting more at the root of the problem in alot of these unfortunate situations. Effective parenting begins with the first diaper, and the parent-child relationship becomes more essential as the students confronts the challenges of adolescence.

katherine,

We do not know when the list for graduation was made, we do not know if the boy had already made some statement prior to graduation, we just do not have enough information. However, if the school was biased against the girl, then that is just flat wrong.

Why does everyone keep tossing around this bible quote like its going to “change our minds” or shut us up? i dont think allowing a pregnant student to walk across the stage at graduation says “hey fornicate and be merry!” you honestly think shes the only girl or boy in that school whos had sex?? no shes just the only one who either got pregnant and decided to keep it, or the only one whos far enough along to show. the standard should be the same for all students if they are going to have one right?

Not to nitpick, but as I am sure you will agree on further reflection, there was no “publicly commited sin.” The sin in question (I certainly hope) was committed in private. The knowledge of the sin and both of the parties involved in the sin was known to the particpants and the school authorities.

The school caused scandal by publicly disciplining the girl while not the boy.

Tarashly,

Well I suppose when Jesus says something I take it as having some meaning. And when Jesus says we must not do anything to cause the young to stumble into sin, I take that very seriously.

When sins become a public scandal, the school MUST take public action or else they are giving public support of that sin. If the school gives public support of any sin, then they are causing young people to possibly stumble into that sin, which directly goes against what Jesus said in that passage.

Scripture also tells us that those who are in positions of teaching authority will be held to a higher standard.
