Interesting development and not surprising either…

Bishop D’Arsy of South Bend/Ft. Wayne has chosen not to attend the commencement because of the speaker. Here is the story

wthr.com/Global/story.asp?s=10065119
Here is the full statement by Bishop D’Arcy:

diocesefwsb.org/COMMUNICATIONS/statements.htm

I have been a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception parish in Fort Wayne for 25 years and have no doubt where our bishop stands on the sanctity of life. Still, I am sure he would appeciate a brief note of support on his statement.

I spoke to Bishop D’Arcy briefly after mass on Sunday, but did not know about this matter until yesterday. Our bishop has been a great supporter of and partner with Notre Dame during his time with us and I am sure he finds this very distressing. Notre Dame has hosted our Eucharistic Congresses and our Superintendant of Catholic Schools is a faculty member at Notre Dame.

If what you said is different than what I said is somehow different, that wasn’t my intention…

One would not be able to find this document at Notre Dame. What I can get for you is a list of Universities and College that have committed to teaching the Magisterium. The absence of the University of Notre Dame on that list should be the proof you are looking for.

I’ll post that link as soon as I’m able. What sources will be acceptable for this proof?
Sean when you post this, would you post it here so all of us can see it. If you could give the source of the list that should be all you would need, I would think.😉

Hi. I went to the site, but couldn’t find an email ads. for the Bishop. Am I blind? I would love to support him. I procrastinate when it comes to snail mail. :o

I tried to find an e-mail address for the Bishop, but with no success.

If procrastination is a problem, how about a phone call? That’s even faster than e-mail 🙂

I did find this, also: diocesefwsb.org/FAMILY/ :

The Office of Family Life assists the Bishop in his pastoral care of marriage and the family and in his promotion of a culture of life. The office coordinates pro-life activities in the diocese

There are several e-mail addresses listed for the OFL:

Fred at fredeverett@sbcglobal.net
Lisa at lisaanneverett@sbcglobal.net
Helen at haustgen@fw.diocesefwsb.org
John & Monica at msikorski@fw.diocesefwsb.org
Margarita at rubymar7@gmail.com

Since they’re the pro-life arm of the Diocese, perhaps they would be a good group to receive your e-mail message. 🙂

Thanks Morwena. 🙂

I’m not a graduate, but if I were, this is the kind of thing that would cause me to mail back my diploma.

Your vision is probably as good as mine and I have worn glasses for almost 50 years. Bishop D’Arcy is not really of the email generation. He will be 77 in August. I am sure he will be informed of any messages of support sent to the family life office.

As you may have guessed based on the location of our diocese, many of the people in our family life office and our liturgy office are Notre Dame grads. Even our conservative protestant republican congressman earned his master’s degree at ND.

I will personally see the bishop several times during Holy Week and would be happy to convey any messages of support I see here. I have yet to hear any criticism of his message.

Pass on a big a hug and kiss from me!👍

I have hugged him before. He washed my feet once. I am not sure about how I will pass on your kiss.
Please give him my regards and tell him I will offer my mass for his intentions on Palm Sunday…He makes me proud to be a Catholic

Oops I mean my communion … for some reason I couldn’t edit my prior post

Yours is good question. Here are some possibilities.

For being solidly anti-Catholic.
For being absolutely committed to suppressing the pro-life movement and promoting abortion.
For … Notre Dam has earned the reputation for being so open-minded that, long ago, their brains fell out. They should change the name of the school.
You hit the nail on the head. To have that pro-death advocate speak at a Christian Collage is scandulas.

Bishop D’Arcy was not at the catherdral today for the 9:30 mass. I did speak with Father Robert Schulte, who is the rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception(a 900 family parish), as well as vicar general and chancellor of our diocese. I am not sure what he does in his spare time, because he does not have any spare time. 😃 Father Schulte did not realize there was no email link to Bishop D’Arcy, but assured me that messages sent to the Family Life Office would get to the bishop.

Bishop D’Arcy also has a much longer scholarly statement on the relationship between the bishop and catholic universities that you may want to read. Grab yourself a snack before proceeding:

I can see where you guys are coming from as catholic.

But…he’s the president, perhaps the most important president we’ve had since FDR. I don’t like his stance on abortion, but he’s done many other good things in his short run as our commander in chief.
“He’s done many good things”???!!! WHAT? He’s been in office 60 days and I’m scared to death of him.

Furthermore, no Catholic should have ever voted for him because of his stand on abortion and embryonic stem cell research. That should have been a major heads up!

What kind of honorary degree and for what is Notre Dame giving him? I wish we could fire him.

Those are, of course, very important issues for Catholics to consider. And you’re opinion regarding President Obama is of course important.

However, the Bishops of the United States do not teach that no Catholic could or should have voted for him. What they teach can be found on their Faithful Citizenship web site: faithfulcitizenship.org/

Typical liberal response is to pretend and make up stuff about a person despite the truth. One can say the same thing about villians of WWII.
