The historic process is easy to understand. Catholics have always been attracted to positivism, which which fact is reflect in the organization of the university into departments. It is no longer pulled together by theology but by a worship of science. Faith is reduced to sentiment and ritual with no connection to truth. Finally even the symbols are disposed of.
When academic freedom becomes more important than the truth they are seeking, they lose both truth and freedom. There are many universities where free speech and the exchange of ideas are restricted more than anywhere else in our society. This battle is not new and it is not over. Here is a statement from Bishop D’Arcy from 3 years ago:

Even to the point of allowing possibly the most pro-death person in the entire US to teach our Catholic youngsters all about abortion. It is only a matter of time before God utters the great “Enough!” When He comes to the aid of the slaughtered innocents under the altar asking for justice, as we read in Revelations.
If being Catholic meant thinking like you do, there would be a lot fewer Catholics. Thankfully, the Church does not demand this sort of ignorance from us.

Ignorance is turning a blind eye to 55 million slaughtered innocent babies. There are a lot fewer Catholics; “Many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14).

God Bless

The most recent list of Bishops who have issued statements opposing the Notre Dame action totals 79. Father Jenkins listened to none of these bishops. Seventy-nine bishops statements including the one who oversees the diocese of South Bend Indiana, fell on deaf ears. Here is the list:

Bishop Trautman of Pennsylvania said this:

“In the words of Mary Ann Glendon, professor of law at Harvard University who turned down the prestigious Laetare Medal from Notre Dame University, President Obama is “an uncompromising opponent of the Church’s position on issues involving fundamental principles of justice.”

May 17th will mark not just a bad decision by university officials, it will mark a day of shame and blemish for the Catholic record and reputation of Notre Dame University. Its relationship to the Catholic hierarchy and to the fundamental principles of the Church has been fractured and will take new leadership to rebuild.”lifesitenews.com/ldn/2009/may/09051512.html

Ignorance is thinking that a secular government can end this problem simply by declaring abortion illegal. Being pro-life means a lot more than just trying to make abortion illegal. It also means finding and working to eliminate the sorts of attitudes and priorities that have caused abortion to become as common as it has.

By focusing so narrowly on abortion, you run the risk of becoming like Norman, in the story I have told here.

What has caused abortion “to become as common as it is”–is the Roe V Wade and Doe v Bolton SCOTUS decisions of 1973! The Court mandated the legalization of abortion throughout nine months of pregnancy! Naturally, it became more common. Naturally, abortion rates exploded, reaching a million a year.

Return the decision to the people of the individual states, who at least have the common sense not to legislate unrestricted abortion.

As JimG was kind enough to point out, the secular government caused this problem. The secular government declared murdering innocent babies legal. It only stands to reason that it can be reversed. In 1857 Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Roger B. Taney ruled in the Dred Scott vs Sandford case that Africans were not human, and like animals had no rights.

The Supreme Court made a mistake in the Dred Scott case and it was corrected. The Roe V Wade and Doe v Bolton are mistakes and need to be reversed also.

God Bless

The law is a teacher. For good or for bad the civil law helps form consciences. The Church tells us we have a moral imperative to change such a gravely unjust law. It is not the sole answer but it is imperative. To minimize this is wrong.

BTW, we have had all types of social welfare programs and we still have abortion. Should that mean we should stop supporting these programs?

Oh yeah… But that’s a completely separate thread and I could on and on about “social welfare” programs. Suffice to say, the social welfare state has proven itself to be an abysmal failure. 2 trillion dollars anyone?
