Yours is good question. Here are some possibilities.

For being solidly anti-Catholic.
For being absolutely committed to suppressing the pro-life movement and promoting abortion.
For almost single-handedly dismantling capitalism.
For changing utterly the American ethic from a motivation to work hard to get ahead to a deep and abiding sense of entitlement.
For being the most secretive president in history, while telling everyone that he is actually transparent.
For his solid and profound commitment to remove Christianity from the public view.
For instigating class warfare in this country.

Those were just the ones that occurred to me now. I suspect there are many others. Notre Dam has earned the reputation for being so open-minded that, long ago, their brains fell out. They should change the name of the school.

Indeed they should - what an insult to Our Lady.

This is so bad on so many levels.

Here’s the note I sent:
Dear Father Jenkins,
I was shocked and saddened to learn today that Notre Dame would not only be welcoming President Obama as its commencement speaker but would bestow upon him an honorary degree. Please do not give up so easily on your ability to restore Catholic values to the University!
As a student at the University of Michigan, I knew many ND students and alumni. Over the years, I have met many more. While the Catholicity of the university seemed to be on life support, there was much hope when you were announced as president. So much progress has been made in the last few years. My oldest son will be a freshman at a Catholic high school in the fall and I have been mentioning Notre Dame in a positive way to get him thinking in the right direction for college. Why, one must ask, is there such an urgent need to go backwards into the gloom of secular humanism? Why is the university driven to reject the Gospel of Life?
President Obama is this country’s most pro-abortion president in its history. That is no secret. He has focused with precision on pro-abortion nominations and executive orders even to the detriment of what should be his prime focus, the economy. His attack on the conscience rights of hospitals and health care workers drew sharp criticism from bishops and Catholics all across the US. His policies on life alone should be the antithesis of what Notre Dame stands for.
From the ND website, I found the mission statement:
“We have a much more challenging mission than most universities. Most universities strive simply to be excellent educational institutions by the accepted standards of the profession. We do this at Notre Dame, and we have had great success. But we also foster and celebrate a distinctive mission to be a Catholic university, inspired and guided by a great spiritual tradition.”
The mission of a Catholic university cannot be to abandon one of the most precious truths of our faith, the commitment to protect all among us, especially the most vulnerable.
Please reconsider and rescind the invitation to President Obama. Please do not give up on the Catholic identity of a great university.
Sincerely,

Mr. Obama will be the ninth U.S. president to be awarded an honorary degree by the University and the sixth to be the Commencement speaker.
The above sentence is from the article linked in the first post of this thread. The
article lists the other Presidents who have been awarded with an honorary degree
from Notre Dame as commencement speakers.
I’m saddened by the quick condemnation of President Obama and Notre Dame
by some. Please read the article.
I hope we can all pray that the President be inspired by Jesus and the Blessed
Mother in the decisions he makes.

And none have had anywhere near as dismal of a record for protecting life, especilly vulnerable, innocent life, as President Obama has in his less than 100 first days.

I did read the article and there is nothing in there that points to a reason we should not be saddened and angered at Notre Dame for this travesty.

Of course we do. Praying for the President and holding Catholic Universities to a standard to uphold Catholic teaching are not mutually exclusive.

Thank you for the address, Mark. Most kind of you.
The decision by ND to HONOR Obama is disgusting to me. I sent this:

"Obama will be the commencement speaker?
Obama will receive an honorary degree?
Obama? OBAMA?

Obama, the most avid supporter of abortion to serve as POTUS is your guest.
Is there a soul on your campus who supports pro-life work?
I’m guessing there are many - yet you spit in their faces."

I always had respect for Notre Dame. No more…Roanoker
Roanoker, while you are not Catholic, you are generally quite well informed and charitable. while I will continue to believe that you do not have the complete deposit of faith, I admire your faithfulness and pleasant discourse.

These few and simple words from you, a non-Catholic, are an even more stinging rebuke of what the once proud Notre Dam is doing.

My letter to him:

Dear Father Jenkins:

I can’t begin to say how sad I am to see that Notre Dame, a CATHOLIC university named after Our Lady, is giving such an honor to the most PRO-DEATH president in the history of this country. A man who has publicly stood in front of a Planned Parenthood banner and said he would make it a top priority of his administration to sign legislation to completely unravel 40 years of hard fought pro-life regulations. A man who called a child a punishment. A man who thinks it is above his pay grade to know when life begins. A man who thinks nothing about spending taxpayer’s dollars to kill the unborn children in other countries. THIS is the sort of man Notre Dame chooses to bestow such honor upon. How many of these lost children would have been students of your university and go on to do great and amazing things? Guess we will never know.

My heart breaks for our Church and what this esteemed institution is doing to her by this act of scandal. What a very very sad place Notre Dame has become. There were no champions present the day this decision was made.

very well said .I hope you do not mind but I used the wording of your letter for the most part and sent a letter to Father Jenkins myself via E-Mail

The priests who own and run Notre Dame are with the Congregation of the Holy Cross.

That’s an international community of priests (might include brothers too).
I contacted the locals at Notre Dame (school and priests) yesterday and today.

Today I also contacted the international authority of the Congregation.
I hope all will do the same!
