That is not going to happen. IAC, I would make them debate like the VP candidate, seated at a table. With the moderator off to the side and generally off-camera.

I disagree - the debates are the only real chance for the Republican candidates to get their message across with the least possible filtering by the liberally biased media. They also serve the purpose of forcing Obama to finally be subject to the kind of scrutiny that the fawning liberal press has refused to do thus far. If Romney wins, it could be said that the debates played a key role - just like they did in 1960.

In 1960 it was said that Kennedy won the debate for those who watched on television but Nixon won for those who heard it on radio. Why did Nixon lose the debate on television? Not due to what he said but rather his appearance: the fact he was unshaven, had shifty eyes, and was altogether not as personable and handsome as Kennedy. The debates are a performance and the visual and auditory stagecraft counts much more than it should, particularly with the undecided voters.

I expected the bias.
What I was not expecting was the moderator to begin arguing and defending Obama.

That is so completely out of the role of moderator that I was a little stunned.

I doubt she will ever work as a moderator again.
She may have been on Obama’s side, but she ultimately hurt their cause.
Days later and the hot button is still the moderator stepping out of her place and the lie that she was defending.

Obama did much better then I expected, and I would consider it a toss up as to who exactly won. But given that the only thing clearly memorable from the debate actually hurts Obama, I cannot consider him the winner.
The moderator took a close debate and handed any points for the victory to Romney.

Thanks for bringing that up. This is one of the more blatant inconsistencies in Obama’s talking points that night.

I agree. I would have loved to see a debate with those two included. Then, maybe we could have had an actual debate, with a multiplicity of viewpoints and potential solutions offered to the complex issues facing our country. Instead, what we saw Tuesday was two adults acting like children arguing with each other.

It was fun to see Romney taught some manners by the moderator. He was extremely rude in the first debate. I was struck again by how self centered and immature he is. It really showed with Mr. Obama and a strong moderator as his foil.

Did anyone else notice how he scowled and grew more and more uncomfortable as Mr. Obama cut him down to size in the last half?

Yes, because untenable solutions proposed by fringe yahoos like Roseanne Barr would really add to an already limited 90 minute discussion.

Of course, we did spend 5 minutes discussing burning issues the merits of the AK-47 ban, so maybe we could allot that time to proposals for the Dept. of Peace.

If you are going to include everyone in these things, the election will need to be a much longer season. More debates for one thing. One of the reason Romney has surged is because of exposure during the debates.

And having a third party win the white house is one thing. Convincing a Congress of Republicans and Democrats to find middle ground with someone like Jill Stein is almost funny.

I’d love to hear how anything thinks she’d be able to convince Congress to work with her…

I didn’t like his answer on contraception. I thought he missed an opportunity to raise the bar.

Yes. He missed opportunities to clobber Obama on the Libya debacle and the natural resources issues (oil, gas and coal). He is not perfect. But Obama is middling, at best.
