Priest accused of ‘anti-gay indoctrination’ for teaching Catholic view of homosexuality in class

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, March 29, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A Catholic priest has come under fire from homosexual activists for “anti-gay indoctrination” after he taught his students what the Catholic Church teaches about homosexuality in his high school course on gay “marriage.”
Equality Matters, a media and communications group for homosexual rights, on their website accused the chaplain of Indianapolis’ Cardinal Ritter High School of “spouting a stream of homophobic and offensive falsehoods about same-sex marriage and gay people in general to a classroom full of students.”
Fr. John Hollowell, chaplain and teacher at the private Catholic high school, had posted the videos of the lectures on YouTube and his personal blog last week.

I think these groups are riding high in light of the Church’s loss of respect due to the priest scandal and the press helping cover the actual problem - homosexual priests.

They are pushing hard.
 
Perhaps so, but Christians of catholic mind and spirit, formed in Holy Scripture, should rally together with persecuted priests like this, and show our support. We ought not let our Roman brethren stand alone, when they stand clearly for the doctrine of Christ.

Need more priests like this who are willing to teach all of the faith no matter the backlash.
 
Well, what does he say, specifically, that got these people angry?
 
Someone in his class had to “turn him in”. I would bet that it is a Gay student that did this.

According to the article, they don’t like that he said homosexual acts are an “abomination”, that SSA can be treated, that he’s against homosexual adoption, and that he compared SSA to alcoholism.

… or it could be any pro-gay cause faction, or an LGBT organization, or a powerful homosexualist in the IT business who can pay someone or a whole department to mine the Internet and the blog world. It’s really not hard to do, especially if Fr. Hollowell’s his lectures are on youtube.

These people yell “Gay ‘marriage’ is our civil right !!!” and yet will not accept the exercise of the first amendment right.

The Church has been silent for too long, now that our leaders begin to speaking up, they want to shut us down. It is about time that the Church takes her leadership in the world. Glory be to God.

I’m not surprised they’re up in arms about any of those beliefs. What I am surprised about is why they care when he’s teaching them in a private school, and a Catholic one at that.
 
This courageous priest is responding to the call of Pope BVI to join the blog world to spread the gospel and true Catholic teachings.

Every non-Catholic and atheist/agnostic organization is doing the same, exact thing to advance their particular beliefs and world view. Why not the Catholic Church through its priests?

The Church should be poised to defend its rights and not be cowed by these bullies.

There are public interest law firms that specialize in religious freedom / first amendment violations, such as the Thomas More Law Center and the American Center for Law and Justice. I hope one of these firms pick up his diocese fast before this claim by Equality Matters does snowball into a lawsuit.

What a wonderful post.

A very good direction to take – an inter-faith cause drawing on Scripture, and men and women joining forces in their wish to preserve the tradition of marriage between two people, male and female, as designed by nature by our Creator.

Father did a wonderful job of outlining Church teaching on this subject! Bravo! Hopefully, the inevitable lawsuit will be successfully defended as it should and must be if we do truly have the rightand freedom to practice our religion and the right to free speech. Let’s pray for this priest and for all clergy so that they, too can be a strong and consistent witness to our faith and teach our children well.

Well, why don’t we take a guess at what he said.? I’ll take a guess without peeking at the You Tube video.

I reckon he would have quoted section **2357 **of the Catechism which states -
Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.” They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.

I also reckon he might have thrown in a quote or two from the Bible. Maybe this one from Leveticus 20:13, which bluntly says -
“If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination.”

Or this one from St. Paul who was a pretty tough dude and who wrote a Letter to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 6:9-11) -
“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived, neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”

Maybe he even threw in a quote from an ancient philosopher like Plato, who in his “Laws” (Book VIII) rejects homosexual intercourse because it can render men unfit for marriage and because it is contrary to nature and a shameless indulgence. He wanted it criminalised, along with adultery, fornication and the use of prostitutes.

Maybe he said something along the lines of the very idea of homosexual marriage is like gluing wings on pigs.

So what else did this good priest say that might have upset the gay lobbiests?

With all due respect, I think it would more accurate to call them pedophil priests rather than homosexual priests. There is a difference.

A couple of points:
  1. It’s not “Church teaching” that SSA can be treated if by treated you mean cured. One is certainly free to hold that opinion but its not a teaching of the Church.
  2. Comparing SSA to alcoholism is an analogy which like all analogies falls short in some respects. Alcoholism is an addiction, whereas SSA is simply a sexual attraction.

I don’t think the press has tried to cover the problem of the pedophile priests but they have, if not covered up, then seriously tried to minimize the problems caused by homosexual preists and their role in the abuse scandals.

This was only an aside by buffalo as it has nothing to do with the OP. But he is right that the Church sex abuse scandal was more about homosexuality than pedophilia.

You can read the John Jay Report directly or a shortened wiki summary here. Briefly, the profile of the victims is reported as follows:

The John Jay report found that 81% of the victims were male; and of all the victims, 22% were younger than age 10, 51% were between the ages of 11 and 14, and 27% were between the ages to 15 to 17 years.
