Overexposure–A new kind of clerical scandal
Brace yourself for a new kind of clerical scandal. In the past, law-enforcement officials might have kept things quiet when priests were arrested for immoral behavior, trusting their bishops to apply the necessary discipline. No longer; the cases are hitting the headlines.

One shady staple of gay culture is “cruising” for sex in public places—typically parks, public restrooms, and highway rest stops. It appears to be the quickest and most reliable way for an overheated gay man to find a partner for the purposes of satisfying his disordered sexual appetite in one manner or another. This frequently entails anonymous public sex, usually between consenting adult males who don’t know one another from Adam. By any standard, it’s reckless behavior. It’s also illegal.

Father Raymond Larger made that startling discovery the hard way. This summer, the Cincinnati priest was arrested and charged with two counts of public indecency in Dayton, Ohio’s Triangle Park, some 50 miles from his parish. Fr. Larger made the mistake of soliciting sex from an undercover police officer. His method: groping the man’s groin and exposing himself.

Triangle Park has long been a popular meeting ground for anonymous homosexual encounters. Fr. Larger was not there by accident. In fact, according to the arresting officer, Fr. Larger told the detective that he’s a frequent visitor to the park. In other words, the priest regularly “cruises” for public sex, a far cry from fitting behavior for any grown man, let alone for a pastor of a Catholic parish.

Fr. Larger pleaded no contest to sexual misconduct charges, was convicted, and given a 30-day suspended jail sentence and one year of unsupervised probation. He was also temporarily stripped of his priestly faculties and suspended indefinitely by Cincinnati’s Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk. It is instructive to note that the convicted priest was not immediately placed on leave. It was only after reporters from Cincinnati’s Channel 9 News confronted the archdiocese about the priest’s arrest and conviction that the archbishop addressed the issue. An archdiocesan spokesman told the Cincinnati Enquirer that the archbishop’s decision to place Larger on paid administrative leave was "a response to loud and numerous complaints from Larger’s flock."

**In 1999, Fr. Robert Betz, a priest of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, was arrested in a public park for lewd and lascivious behavior, including masturbating in front of an undercover officer. **

Still a pastor
This last case is particularly interesting one. Although the arrest is public knowledge, Father Betz has continued in his role as pastor of two parishes in South Milwaukee. (The parishes were “merged” earlier this year.) In a letter dated January 27, 2003 to Stephen Brady, President of the Illinois-based Roman Catholic Faithful, Archbishop Timothy Dolan responded to an inquiry regarding Fr. Betz’s standing within the Milwaukee archdiocese. Writing on behalf of the prelate who replaced the disgraced Archbishop Rembert Weakland, Fr. Joseph F. Hornacek explained to Brady that “Fr. Betz publicly acknowledged his sinful behavior… repented, took advantage of professional counseling and spiritual direction, and promised this behavior would never occur again.” This was the prelude to Archbishop Dolan’s justification for allowing the convicted priest to remain a pastor in good standing. Fr. Hornacek explained that parishioners at Betz’s parishes “asked the archbishop [Rembert Weakland at the time] to allow him to remain their pastor,” and that Archbishop Weakland acceded to their wishes because “Fr. Betz has never been guilty of any behavior which would pose a risk to the children of the parish.” Archbishop Dolan, touted hopefully as a “conservative” prelate who might just turn things around in long-suffering Milwaukee, ratified his disgraced predecessor’s judgement.

It is interesting that, in Cincinnati, Fr. Larger’s parishioners are angry and demanded that Archbishop Pilarczyk remove the sex offender from ministry, while in Milwaukee, Fr. Betz’s parishioners are so understanding of their pastor’s lewd and lascivious conduct that they asked their archbishop to keep the convict at the altar and in the pulpit. Either Fr. Hornacek is lying—I do not think he is—or something is seriously wrong in South Milwaukee. **What parent in his right mind would knowingly leave his son (or daughter) alone with a priest who was arrested for masturbating in front of an undercover cop in a public park? **

And that is based on a false assumption that all homosexuals that “cruise” are pedophiles. “Cruising” behavior has nothing whatsoever to do with a desire to touch kids. In fact, men who are engaged in this behavior tend to avoid places and/or times when families and/or children are present in order to avoid being seen. I know this because I used to do it a long time ago (not something I’m proud of – I was more careful about it, too). It’s a behavior that is rooted in a desperate need for male attention and acceptance. It’s a distorted way of trying to get that attention and acceptance and an outgrowth, for many, of the issues that homosexual persons deal with.
 
If a priest is out soliciting sex then it is clear that he really cannot live out his vows of celebitcy and I would think he has other issues as well.

Therefore, I don’t think he should be allowed to continue to exercise his vocation of the ministry of the ordained priesthood.
 
I wouldn’t leave my child alone with a priest full stop. This is no different than the fact I wouldn’t leave them alone with any other adult I didn’t know really well. If I did kow the priest well, then it might be different. I don’t approach my relationships with priests any differently than I do with any other person.

Homosexuality is a disorder just as beastiality is a disorder. Some people have more than one sexual disorder. I’m not saying that all homosexuals who cruise are pedophiles but I wouldn’t want to risk my child’s safety to test your theory out.

Father Larger’s sexual disorder wasn’t limited to adult homosexual sex.

To be honest, I agree with mumto5’s post where s/he says that s/he wouldn’t trust his/her child with any adult s/he doesn’t know very well.

In cases like this, I think that this kind of charge (or any other sexual morals charges against priests) warrants at least a suspension of his priestly duties is in order until a full investigation has taken place. If it has been determined that he had committed such an act, then he should be laicized (or, in popular parlance, defrocked). If it has been determined that he had not committed such an act, he should be reinstated.

And Fr. Larger’s case is not indicative of all, or even the vast majority, of persons with homosexual attractions.

A priest does not break his vow of celebacy by having sex; that is this sin of fornication or adultery. In order to break a vow of celebacy, he would have to get married.
 
I voted no, but only because I never leave my child alone with anyone who isn’t in the family.

When it comes to these bishops who “just don’t get it,” I think every future consecration of a bishop should require that a letter of resignation be sent to the pope prior to the priest’s elevation to bishop. This was the policy of Abraham Lincoln, who decided on this strategy to get rid of hornery cabinet officers during his presidency without having to go through the controversial process of a public firing. His officers acceded to his demand.

Such a policy, executed by the pope, would put him and his successors in a position to “quietly” remove bishops who act like criminals in defending criminal priests by keeping them in the hire of the Church. Just publish the letter of resignation and presto … the bishop goes away.
 
The Pope doesn’t need a letter of resignation. As Pope, he can remove any Bishop at any time. But the problem is, what will the Bishop do once he is removed? He remains a Bishop. His ordination to that state is permanent. Ordination can’t be undone just like Baptism can’t be undone. As Bishop, he still has the power to ordain priests and bishops. So the potential for schism is there. Removing a Bishop is a very delicate matter. It’s crucial to ordain the right man in the first place.
 
Miguel, are you trying to sell the idea that most, if not all, homosexual men have a secret desire to boink little boys?

I am opposed to homosexuality just as much as any other orthodox Catholic. I wish I could wave a magic wand and heal the issues in my life that cause me to feel sexually attracted to other men, I would in an instant. I am getting tired of is this broadbrushing by so many and their refusal to acknowledge the true issues underlying homosexuality. It’s refused by the “gay movement” as well as those who believe that “homasexials” are kindling for the flame of hell and that God hates them, so we should, too. Also, this ridiculous notion that someone would actively choose to be homosexually attracted has got to be understood as silly.

The underlying causes of homosexual attractions are gender-identity deficit coupled with a defensive detachment toward other men. The normal need to fulfill the need for a man to identify with his own sex through association with other men is perverted in men who are homosexually attracted. I state firmly that pedophilia is a completely different issue as it is an exclusive desire to boink children. There can be homosexual pedophilia, bisexual pedophilia or heterosexual pedophilia. But it’s pedophilia.

It’s difficult for a heterosexually attracted person to understand, sympathize or relate to this. It’s also easy to sit there and blame homasexials for all the ills in the church. It’s so easy feel grossed out by “those faygets,” to sit in judgement over “them thar homasexials,” instead of reaching out to help a homosexually attracted person and try to help them with their issue and to show the love and compassion of Jesus to them.
