Sorry to have to add this sad news to this thread but thought you might want an update. The OP of Father Larger’s arrest was two summers ago. Below is from charges brought on in July:
July 13: Priest Indicted For Sex Abuse
AUDIO/VIDEO
Prosecutor Joe Deters announced a six count criminal indictment of a Cincinnati Priest Wednesday, for the rape and sexual abuse of a child.
Deters promised abuse victims he’d review former prosecutor Mike Allen’s plea deal with the archdiocese to see if he could bring additional charges.
I-Team reporter Laure Quinlivan broke many stories on the archdiocese sex abuse scandal and joins us now with the latest.
Laure on set:
Deters says he learned of this because the 21-year-old man applied for the church’s victims’ compensation fund.
Apparently, the three-person tribunal didn’t believe him. But deters investigated, believed him, and took it to a grand jury.
Today they indicted Father Raymond Larger, a well-known priest who pastored St. James in White Oak and Our Lady of Visitation.
Larger turned himself in today after he was indicted by a grand jury. He’s now charged with six counts of rape and sexual battery of a child.
“These occurred thru the years 1995-1997. It is the grand jury’s belief and our belief that this occurred when this young man’s mother was dying of cancer. Father Larger was at the time, I believe at St. James in White Oak,” said Joe Deters, Hamilton Co Prosecutor.
Dave Washington is the 21-year-old victim’s attorney. He says the victim is scared of going through a trial, but he’s willing to do what it takes to bring Larger to justice.
Victims say they’re content with Deter’s work but feel betrayed by former prosecutor Mike Allen’s plea deal.
“We look at the settlement fund as the sweetheart part of the deal, the victims were never asked about the settlement fund,” said Christy Miller of SNAP.
Deters agrees with victims that Allen handled it poorly.
“I think if I had been the prosecutor I would have brought the victim’s groups in and said look, we can’t proceed criminally because of statute of limitations but here’s what they’re offering, what do you think about it, how should we deal with this. But I don’t think this was done here,” said Deters.
Deters says he supports the victims trying to pass Senate Bill 17, a law to extend the statute of limitations so victims’ civil lawsuits can go forward.
“Based on what I’ve seen in the last six months, I think it is an important remedy that these people be held accountable for what they’ve done. I think it was an egregious error on hierarchy of the church to not have brought this to law enforcement,” said Deters.
The archbishop isn’t saying much beyond ‘the church cooperated with the prosecutor and Father Larger is once again on administrative leave.’
Larger was put on administrative leave in August 2003 for nine months after he was arrested and convicted of exposing himself in a Dayton, Ohio, park.
The archbishop assigned him to St. Peter in Chains Cathedral downtown where he said mass as recently as yesterday.
