I remember well that controversy about Harry Potter and Jimmy Akin and while they did stretch the truth about the Pope condemning it, you have to realize that part of its mandate is family friendly news. Some Christian/Catholic families don’t like the Harry Potter series.
Fair enough. And that’s fine that parents take issue with Harry Potter. I have no problem with that. What irks me is when people misattribute words or sentiments to our Holy Father that he simply did not say. We get that enough in the secular press, we shouldn’t have to encounter it in the Catholic press as well.
I read Jimy Akins post. It was very narrow in scope. It did not condemn the site. It condemned the manor in; which, a story was written. I find it hard to condemn a site because of one story.

I really struggle with this thread. I have been posting on several “liberal” secular sites and have found that these sites post opinions. They never post facts. The majority of these opinions are based upon political marketing and not facts or critical thinking. For example they will state “Separation of Church and State” which is not in the Constitution and every Founding Father refuted. (I can post all of this on another thread.) Or that pro-life people are one issue voters. We are not. Abortion just happens to be so overwheming that it takes precedent. We certainly look at all issues and try to impact as many as possible. My point is that people fall for marketing gimmics by politicians instead of looking for facts. This thread has broken down to this same concept. People giving personal opinions that they can not defend. As such I am going to leave this thread. Bless all of you.
You are absolutely right. It was narrow in scope. I do not mean to broadly condemn LSN. People were asking for evidence that they can skew things at times, so I offered the example that I remember.

I really do like LSN most of the time. But, in light of things like the “Pope/Potter” articles, I’m always cautious. Of course, I try to be cautious when reading from any news source. So in that way, I don’t think I treat LSN any differently than any other news source.

Applying the criteria that other people have for Lifesite, I do not consider the NYT, CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, and the other Liberal MSM elite credible since they do not spin the story the way I want them to and the censorship of stories that make the left look bad.

Also, there has been a seried of phony story ranging from Jayson Blair to Rathergate that lowers their credibility.

I think that’s a perfectly fair criticism. The good thing about LSN is that they at least wear their bias on their sleeve, so to speak. It’s in their name for goodness sake! You know what perspective they’re coming from.

This is the diocese where I grew up…it makes me  that the bishop will not even speak to correct the situation!

WINDSOR, Ontario, February 12, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The President of the Catholic Assumption University of Windsor told LifeSiteNews.com (LSN) in an interview today that the Catholic Church’s position on abortion “is not an infallible teaching.”

Fr. Paul Rennick, who is also Vice Chancellor of the school, gave the remarks when LSN sought comment regarding the school’s decision to invite Cokie Roberts, a pro-abortion Catholic news analyst who has criticized the Church for preaching against homosexuality and contraception, to address the school as part of the “Christian Culture” lecture series.

Fr. Rennick told LSN that he had “personally vetted” the selection of Roberts and chose her because she was “a woman of faith,” a “well known Catholic” and “successful as an individual Christian.”

LSN asked Fr. Rennick, “Do you think there is a possibility of scandal from the fact that she has professed very pro-abortion views and has criticized Catholic bishops for teaching Church doctrine on homosexuality and contraception?” The President of the Catholic University replied, “No, I don’t.”

Asked to elaborate, Fr. Rennick said: “If you look at the catholic population, you’ll find a whole variety of positions on all of those topics. It seems to me that disagreement on a particular position doesn’t disqualify one from being a Catholic. Unless, of course, that position is whether Jesus is the Christ.”

“Abortion is not an infallible teaching. It never has been proclaimed infallibly,” he said. “This attempt to put everything that the Church teaches in this one set of categories, it seems to me, is not a proper Catholic position, not according to the history of our church,” he added.

LSN sought comment about Fr. Rennick’s remarks from London Bishop Ronald Fabbro who is Chancellor of Assumption University. Mark Adkinson, Director of Communications for the diocese, told LifeSiteNews.com he would not be able to have the bishop comment. Asked if there would be a better time to contact the bishop, Adkinson replied, “No, because I don’t view LifeSite as a legitimate news source.”

So it sounds like they are ok with us picking and choosing the commandments that we want to follow. Obviously “Thou shalt not kill” is optional in their opinion. I wonder if that original tablets that Moses had the commandments on contained asterisks and footnotes. Maybe God really meant for them to be the “Ten General Guidlines and Suggestions” 🤷

So, does this make Fr. Rennick a formal heretic, or just a material one?

Unbelievable

I wish I could just make it up as I go along.
LOL
I understand your comment, but heartily disagree. Everytime I have gone against the Church…by just committing a sin (not even to say that it isn’t really a sin)…I have come to realize just why it is a sin. Take fornication for example. History and common sense let us know even the why’s of it being grave sin.
I am glad for God’s laws to follow.

Since LifeSite is a pro-Life Catholic information source it will always lean toward the hard line life side. I really like the information they give me and send this along to others 😃 as often as I can.

I understand that someone that is not pro-life and is a non-catholic might think it is an extremist news source.
You will not find anyone more pro-life than I, and I am sometimes troubled by LifeSite news and their bullheaded prorogation of certain positions that are just plain incorrect. That, and they have a knack on having such a slant on an issue, that they end up not giving the whole truth.

I do find a lot of their material to be good, but I’m troubled by some subjects where they seemingly refuse to tell the whole story. Problem is, very well meaning, holy, pro-life people go there looking for information to defend life, and they trust LifeSite implicitly because they are on the same ‘side’. I have heard Drew Mariani quoting articles from Life Site to his radio audience on subjects where they are downright WRONG, and even he doesn’t know it. He trusts them! The media, any media, has an obligation to report the truth, and in some cases Life Site fails miserable in this area.

It completely undermines the whole pro-life movement when they seemingly purposefully give false or incomplete information. I think there are a bunch of more credible pro-life news sources out there.:twocents:

As with any site we use we must use our God given judgement as to the value of the information.

I agree.

But how are people who go there looking for answers because they trust them going to know?

Like I said, even someone like Drew Mariani trusts them seemingly implicitly, and then goes and shares what he hears there with his entire radio audience. So, how do people know who to trust? And what harm does it do in discrediting the pro-life movement when people then go out in their lives and espouse these errors?

You’re right, people DO need to use their good judgment, and to fact check their articles, because obviously LifeSite has decided not to at least some of the time.:twocents:

As a homeschooling family for the last two generations, I would say that understanding the articles as written requires an educated population that is able to discern the truth from any information. I have observed the reading and comprehension scores go down each year for the last 40 years and now (they sometimes look like things are improving but the standards keeps getting lowered) news papers and other print media are aimed at a fifth grade education now. IMHO this is a deliberate dummying down of our society by the government that wants to remain in power and control what we think, say or do.

I will disagree with you on your opinion of LifeSite. I find them quite well informed. My only problem with them is that sometimes I have to work on finding their research source as they do not always post the secular studies. I have never seen a deliberate misquote of secular or religious authors. When errors have been made they send out e-mails with the corrected information.

Hi shannyk: I’m starting to wonder if any media outlets really do report the truth? I follow LifeSiteNews.com, but I would really appreciate it if you would share what you have found to be more credible pro-life news sources. Thanks. 🙂

  1. A Catholic University is only one that is Pontifical. In the USA there are only to Catholic Universities: The Catholic University of America and the Josephinum.
  2. There are universities that are Catholic, but are privately run by non profit organizations such as St. Leo’s University, Christendom College and the one in question.
  3. There are universities that are Catholic, but are religious. They are owned and run by a religious order, such as Franciscan University, Georgetown, Boston, Notre Dame and many others.
The Church has no jurisdiction over two and three. They answer to their legitimate authority within their institution.
From my tours of “Catholic” universities, I would call them neither Catholic, nor religious. GLT organization sponsoring get togethers, coed housing, and “being pro choice in a green world” seminars were enough to convince me my kids would go to Ave Maria, Christendom or a nice Baptist school.

Land of Lakes was one of the great religious catastrophes of our time.

Not having read this entire thread, I wonder how he justifies his comment (statement) with papal infallibility on faith and MORALS, which certainly applies to abortion.
