This is thought-provoking. When we are young, we tend to have ideal visions of our futures. We think that if we do things right, we’ll attain that vision, not realizing how much rests on other people–the woman who doesn’t hire people who look like her ex’s new wife, the man who steals the company funds, the car wreck, the tornado…
And we can begin to learn that from our elders: the parents who did everything right whose child turned away from goodness, the libertarian who had to accept government help when a family member had cancer…
Life is not A+B=exactly what we want. And those people who get what they want aren’t getting help in attaining holiness, which really requires suffering.
