The OP needs to tell the priest what he did. That might solve the problem right there.
That whole issue aside, I feel conflicted about the whole private/public Baptism thing. My parish has infant Baptisms twice a month and the preference is to have them immediately after Mass. The parish is invited to stay and watch. They only seem to do the Baptisms during Mass during the Easter season. When they have more than one baby, they do them in front of the Altar. When there’s only one baby, they do them at the official Baptism font located in a lovely chapel in the back. I personally love seeing the Baptisms at Mass. I think it’s really important as a community to have them. If they didn’t have them during Mass occasionally, the only way I’d get to see a baby Baptism is if I have a baby myself! (And I love seeing them! Sometimes they make me cry!) That being said, with my first, we had a “private” Baptism in the chapel with just my own family and it was much more intimate and just nicer.
So, I guess my conclusion is that they should have private Baptisms for my kids, but Baptisms during Mass for everyone else so I can watch. That’s reasonable right? Oh, and neither method is at all Protestant-y.
