A FORMER vicar-general in the archdiocese of Munich has claimed that he was pressurised last month into taking the blame for a mistake made 30 years ago by the then Archbishop of Munich, Joseph Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict), concerning the case of a paedophile priest.
Fr Gerhard Gruber has now said he did so only after coming under huge pressure from unnamed Catholic Church sources to take responsibility, so as to “take the pope out of the firing line”.
In a letter to a friend, seen by German weekly magazine Der Spiegel , Fr Gruber wrote that he was “begged” in numerous phone calls and after receiving a prepared statement by fax for him to sign. The magazine said Fr Gruber expresses unhappiness in the letter at being given the sole blame in public

This doesn’t seem to be going away…😦

Where can we see the documents supporting this?
Looks like *Der Spiegel * got sight of a personal letter. We’ll probably have to wait for Fr Gruber’s response to learn if he, in fact, wrote what he is alleged to have written. However, I do think it unlikely that Der Speigel would make it up.

This entire article seems to be nothing but heresay. They find something suspicious and put it in print just to stir the pot…Believe non of what you hear and half of what you see.

Hmm. In a climate whereby we have seen already that the MSM does not have a correct grasp of many facts to begin with, and has sensationalized and slanted ‘facts’, AND in which we have seen that they are absolutely fanatic about ‘going after’ correspondence, and ‘dig up’ things, we are expected to believe that with the whole FOCUS being on supposed ‘coverups’ by the Church that the Pope would be such a FOOL as to try to engineer ANOTHER (supposed) COVERUP?

Yeah, and I’ve got a SWELL bridge in Brooklyn and some land in Florida you’ll want to buy. . .

No, it is far more likely that this priest is the one being besieged and/or tempted into deception. Note that he is ‘unhappy with being assigned sole blame.’

We all like to think that we’d be ‘martyrs’ for the faith so to speak, and that DOESN’T mean that I’m saying he agreed to take the ‘fall.’

It means that he WAS responsible. But this is a HUGE story and it isn’t going away. It is likely that when it ‘started’ that some members of the Vatican may have encouraged him (not to ‘take the fall’ but to 'show the press that we are man enough to take our mistakes), but that with the insistence of the press etc. and a lot of twisting and rationalization he may have ‘sounded off’ to a friend that hey, he is getting all the flak and the Pope WAS the archbishop so it doesn’t seem fair. That could have been twisted by the media and it probably was.

I feel sorry for all involved but since my faith in Christ’s Church isn’t dependent on the ‘impeccability’ of its members, up to and including the Pope, even if it turned out that the Pope was guilty of grave sin, it still would not invalidate Catholic teaching nor destroy my faith in Christ and His Church. EVER.

That, unfortunately, isn’t what it appears the media wants to hear. What they seem to hope is that they can ‘prove’ that Benedict was ‘guilty’ of some ‘grave’ sin so that they can then claim that the “CATHOLIC CHURCH” is no longer a moral voice. The lack of logic is staggering but sadly expected in today’s topsy-turvy moral cesspool. . .

yes… 😦 I think that through this, some people hope to destroy the Church. (which won’t happen but it might cause a lot of damage nonetheless).

FWIW, I just went through the coverage in die Süddeutsche Zeitung, and is all, that I could see, just “he said, he said" – no actual evidence, just words.

The headline is inaccurate. It should say “Unnnamed source who claims to be friend of priest claims that priest was pressured…”

I think I would need to see a lot more to back up these claims. Has Fr. Gruber actually said these things or are they being misconstrued? The Der Spiegel article has all that’s necessary for a juicy cover-up story. I mean we have an elderly priest coming under intense pressure to take one for the team, then he goes on to say he never signed certain documents that have his signature, the Archbishop calls him up and thanks him for being the fall guy.

The story seems to be based upon one source with no outside verification from other sources. And, it very much seems to support Markomalley’s characterization of the other article as hearsay “he said, he said” innuendo. I don’t know what’s really going on here, but something smells fishy.

The Media is definitely salivating and circling the Catholic Church (The Pope in particular) like sharks that smell blood, I believe there are a few other things going on here as well. No doubt there are people that want to bring down the Church and the Papacy being their prey. There are people right inside the Church and a few in high places inside the Church that would love nothing more than to bring down Papal authority completely. This is nothing new. Satan is alive and well within the Church of Christ in 2010, and has been for a very long time. He is now, however, working overtime.

According to Fr. Z’s blog, Msgr. Gruber is saying this story is [GASP!] inaccurate.
