Reports are preliminary, but this attack doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the recent sex abuse news.
Initial reports were that Manriquez was a transient, but Samudio could not confirm that. Police say the suspect was known to the church staff and was reportedly demanding his baptismal records at the time of the stabbings.

It sounds like he is simply an unstable person.

Fortunately, both victims are doing well.
Conway’s daughter is a nurse at Maricopa County Medical Center where the two are being treated. She was on duty when her mother called her to tell her what happened.

the latest i read was that the man was shouting something about wanting his baptismal records.

the priest and the woman both survived the attack and have been stabilized.
