Very, very poor taste. (as also was the case in the priest who wore the, um, ‘kittycat’ hat’ at Mass).

Now, let’s see if (since the priest in question with the meme) has apologized, taken it down, made it clear it was bad taste and not the stance of the Church) just how fast we will show him mercy and forgiveness. . .:coffeeread:

Just asking…would you feel the same if the situation was reversed and an anti-Trump priest put a meme on Facebook suggesting pro-Trump people should jump off buildings?
It would not have made sense as a joke.It still would have been odd and inappropriate.

I agree. I was just asking her that, since she seemed to write the whole thing off as not that bad. :)👍

Mercy and forgiveness? That seems to be out of the question for me. It is not something to even be considered. What offense should we forgive the priest of? Saying something in bad taste and offending people? No, that’s too easy. Forgiveness is not morally obligatory or even relevant in this case because there should be no moral indignation for expressing his thoughts and sentiments (particular the sentiment of disdain).

I do not insist on vindictiveness. I was initially mildly outraged at the Father Pizzo, but while thinking about it, I am actually grateful for Father Pizzo’s remarks and amused by them since I found them illuminating.

Yes, his remarks were very inconsiderate, but should there be any opprobrium for his inconsiderate remarks? What do those remarks reveal about him? More importantly, are there any other priests who share similar sentiments but do not express them?
“He says he intended it as satire only, regrets the offense it has caused and has deleted it. This post does not, in any way, represent the view of the church.

That is the most important issue.

Those remarks reveal that the priest has contemptuous thoughts and disregards the concerns of social justice. Many of those people have to encounter messages from conservatives saying that voting for Hillary Clinton for any reason is a mortal sin. (I didn’t do that.) They have the impression that the Church on cares about reproductive issues, and could only give lip service to other social issues and isn’t primarily concerned about them. The real issue is how many other priests and bishops who hold the same sentiments but have not directly reveal them. The relevant message for the anti-Trump posters concerned about social justice is that the many in the Church, such as priests, bishops, and parishioners, are indifferent to your concerns are regard you with contempt. You will not find an ally in the Church or any sympathy there.

As for myself, I practically stopped praying when someone told me that torture of suspected insurgents is justified because “they are international terrorists”. I made the conclusion that the conservative ethos of that person’s parish regardless of its magnanimous rhetoric for “human life” does not really afford one with a respect for human dignity. I feel that when I go to Mass, there is no one that sympathizes with me. It is emotionally easier for me not to go unless I have someone sympathetic with me.

Its better to stay away sites sites/groups like churchmilitant and th Lepanto Institute. These groups IMO are thinly veiled efforts to legitimatize homophobia, Islamophobia and climate denial positions. They have stirred up antipathy towards Pope Francis as well. Totally un-Christian IMO.

The priest needs to apologize. Trump’s crudeness and anti-Muslim and immigrant actions (he may back out of President Obama’s promise to Australia to take some refugees from that country) are stirring up scary things among some on the right.

Why should the priest apologize? He revealed what he truly thought about those who fought for social justice and against Trump? What is an apology going to do? Will it change the sentiments of contempt and ideology that influenced to make that post?
