I don’t think “relevant” is the problem. “Relevance” is good. Because religion is relevant, and I think we can make Worship relevant without compromising its dignity.

The line between “relevance” and “stupidity” is not THAT thin…
Are you saying my comment was stupid?

What is worse: my husband sent me the link to this video. He is not Catholic and borders on anti-Catholic since my reversion back to the Church. This video is evidence that the Holy Mass is no different than a Prostestant service. Entertainment is not what the mass IS about. The Mass is SERVICE, discipline, the work of God’s people and most importantly** conversion**. These children will never understand that. And when it is no longer entertaining and caters to the “me” generation desires, they will leave. Sad.

Now do any of you really believe that those people are there for Holy Mass or just to see the priest… 🤷

I would hope the childrens parents hopefully being wiser would find another parish to go to.
As for the priest; he needs a lot of serious supportive prayers. We all owe our priests that sincere support. Its our obliged duty as Catholics.

IMHO, churches trying to be “entertaining” is exactly the reason why the kids stop going to Mass when they grow up. Because they’ve came to expect mere entertainment rather than experiencing the awe of being in the Lord’s presence-and when they grow up, they’ll realize that there are higher-quality forms of entertainment out there, so they leave the Church to focus more on these kinds.

If the goal is to be “entertaining,” then there will be miserable failure.
However, if goal is to bring souls closer into a lifelong relationship with Jesus and to make sure they spend eternity happy with him in heaven-then there will be the greatest success there is, and more souls will be saved!

Respectfully; I fail to fathom the reasoning concerning reasons of entertainment needed to occupy the minds of younger kids a teens as a way to draw them nearer to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Quite bluntly the real reason kids teens leave the Church is much for the same reasons Adults leave the Church. No Faith

I will add one very important sad element about kids and teens very prevalent these days, is the fact that they are sorely misdirected or completely abandoned by a parents true love and discipline. Add too this the rarity of a parents duty to teach their children about God through in the ways of the Church in addition to catechetical studies. Many parents think its the Church’s sole responsibility for their childrens religious upbringing and abandon their own obligatotory responsibilities.

The Church gives us spiritual life through the sacraments of faith and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. What more can we ask for if we are prudent and devout to our Faith.

Kids get enough brain-washing and soul deceiving worldly entetainrment outside the Church, why bring it inside the sacred walls of God;s Holy Catholic Church.

I grew up with strict loving Catholic parents. Something I’ve treasured and will respect all the days of my life with no regrets in thanks to God. Never did I need to be entertained in the Catholic Church by clown acts.

You are absolutely right. I truly wonder about the basic competency of clerics and lay “liturgists” who come up with this sort of stuff. Your posting said a great deal in two short paragraphs. Do they lack the critical thinking skills necessary to ponder this matter?

How could a man make it through seminary, be ordained and then feel this is OK to do? The Church needs to formally study this type of thing so it can better understand and prevent such abuse.

I have to say, there is also a cultural issue going on as well. I think the priest in the video would be considered a “dweeb” by most of the young on the Anglo side of my parish. I think his chasuble would look looks particularly dorky to most English speaking kids. If he tried this at an English language Mass there would also be a huge uproar, even though I am sure he would have some supporters, even if the bishop had approved it.

On the other hand I can actually see this taking place at one of our Spanish language Masses. All you need to do is go to a Mass in Spanish (at least here in California) and notice how loud and unruly many (not all but many) of the children already are. It’s a cultural issue.

As my friends from Guadalajara, MX have stated – “Children are treated like little princes and princesses up to a certain age in Mexico. They are not disciplined.” This cultural phenomena plays a part in what we are seeing in this video.

Great post!! 👍

Now we know why Gallup published it’s recent poll entitled, “U.S. Catholic Hispanics becoming less religious and shrinking!” And it’s a pretty good clue as to why even those in Mexico are leaving Catholicism for Evangelical/Protestant churches.

Wouldn’t evangelical protestant churches have MORE entertainment? More and better music, better singers, probably better preachers, more emotional prayers, more sing-a-long songs?

Thats embarrassing that something like that would happen in a Catholic liturgy (of all places) Really, how does this stuff keep on happening?
It keeps happening because the clergy still feel they can adapt the Liturgy to meet what they feel are the ‘needs’ of their congregation. Instruction from the Congregation for Divine Worship is still either routinely ignored, or clergy look at the Instruction from Rome and ask themselves, “OK this is what the Holy See wants, but how can I push things as far as I can without having absolutely broken the actual wording of the Instruction, even if I’m going against the spirit of it”.

I really hope that when we have our new Pope that a very rigid hard line is taken with regard to the Liturgy, and that no leaway will be given for individual adaptation of the Liturgy.

Yes and no. Not necessarily more sing-a-longs…its frequently a worship band that “performs”. The preaching though, certainly. Public Speaking and Effective writing should be mandatory parts of seminary, imo.

Ya, but do we still have the beer? There was a YouTube video a couple of years ago that was being circulated from Germany that showed the Eucharist being celebrated outdoors simultaneously with an Oktoberfest type of thing going on complete with big frosty mugs of dark amber. I tried to find it again, but my search came up empty.

I wonder if you’re thinking of the mass that also had the Confederate flag on stage during the liturgy? If so, the reason your search is falling short is because it was Austria, not Germany.

Don’t remember the flag - do you have a link?
