I that makes a great deal of sense. I think I also find it repulsive because some priests are in essence saying “none of you like me acting in this manner but there’s not a darned thing you can do about it.”When you think about it, though, these are affectations that are just as annoying in heterosexual women. It isn’t that the person is being effeminate or feminine that is annoying. It’s that he or she is indulging in eccentric behavior meant to call attention to himself or herself. Even if the person is self-less–and perhaps especially if the person is self-less–the behavoior is still extremely self-centered. That is why it gets old so quickly.
For instance, if a person uses an exaggerated accent, it doesn’t matter if they’re using a lisp and saying “darling” and “fabulous” every third word or if they are pretending to be Sherlock Holmes or Mr. Spock or someone from the “Hahvahd” Class of 1930. In the absence of an extreme affection for the person or knowledge that there is an honest reason for them to talk like that, the desire to smack them can become intense, and the desire to get away from them almost certainly will be overwhelming. You really, really have to like a person to let them get away with that.
That kind of self-indulgence is problematic in a priest, forget what flavor of affectation is chosen. It isn’t the sexual orientation that is the problem, but the self-centered eccentricity.
