Are priests allowed to wear real clothes? Like aside from priest uniforms? Are do they wear their black uniform with the collar all the time outside of mass? Is it optional?

Sure they can wear non-clergy clothing. I have a lot of priest friends that only wear their Roman collar when they are attending some kind of church function or some event that is somehow related to their pristly duties. Some people believe that prists should always wear their roman collar because it identifies themselves as a priest. In doing so, it gives more visibility to God and the church. It might also instill something in someone to either make a confession or approach the priest and confide in them about a problem they might have. It is always important to remember the priesthood is not a profession, it is a calling. Being a priest means one must be prepared to be needed 24/7. That being said, just like anyone…a priest will need some days off and vacations. I am willing to bet, a majority of priests do not wear the clerical garb when on vacation.

Peace

This may sound funny, but I always thought if I were going to be a priest I would be the priest with the roman collar, shorts, shades, and a baseball cap. The “cool priest”. 😃

What would a priest wear if he was invited to a formal event that would usually require a suit and tie? Would he wear a suit and tie? What if he is a religious priest? Would they even be able to buy a suit?

You could always go the Legionnaire route. They were their collar under a double breasted suit. I think it would relatively easy to put a jacket over the collar. For those who wear cassocks this might be a bit more of an issue.

A priest certainly could wear a suit and tie, but typically he would wear black suitcoat and dress slacks with a black shirt and Roman collar to such an event. (Or, in cases where another color is prescribed, say grey, that the similar outfit in that style). Many, if not most, religious order priests also have this sort of set up readily available in their closet, even if they don’t wear it regularly. If the event were even more formal (tuxedo) it could be appropriate for him to get all decked out in cassock and whatever acoutraments are appropriate to his rank in the clergy.

At the seminary I attended, we all burned our ties as a part of the yearly tradition before we are ordained transitional deacons. From then on we never wear ties again, it’s always the Roman collar. Heck, I even wear it deer hunting!👍

Do you have a picture of such a thing? I always wondered what all the accouterments would look like.

On a side note, I saw Father Larry in the full black dressy thing with the color today. That was cool and made me smile.

A black cassock?

Our pastor wears his collar and for “dressy” functions he’ll wear a suit coat in grey or black. It’s been said that he shows up “incognito” to our summer festival. I can’t blame the man for not wearing the all black clothing during our humid Ohio summers.

I work at a Jesuit High School. The priests wear a black suit coat with their black slacks and black shirt with collar. It is generally accepted that the collar takes the place of a tie.

I prefer the above look myself, but it’s up to the individual priest.
Father Larry was wearing something like the above yesterday after Mass. I thought it looked shnazzy!

Both pictures are the same style (cassock), but one has a centure and the other does not.
