I may have spelled it wrong or even have the wrong word 😊 It is what is tied around the priest’s waist in the first picture.
Nah, you probably used the right word - I just never heard it before. Thanks,

Catholig

Actually, the above picture of the Cardinal ā€œall dressed upā€ shows His Eminence in Choir Dress, which is reserved for when a cleric is present at a liturgy but not performing any sort of liturgical duty (for example, when watching the Masses from the Vatican on EWTN, you will see the Cardinals and Bishops sitting in the congregation wearing the mozetta, rochet, and choir cassock, while the concelebrants (if there are any) are wearing full Mass vestments).

The appropriate attire for clerics when suit and tie are required, if the cleric choses to wear a cassock, is the ferruaiuolo. For more on this garment, see

Why did some of the priests and bishops have the hats with the brims instead of birettas?

The hats with brims are the traditional gallero hats. You might remember the character on Saturday Night Live ā€œFr. Guido Sarducciā€ wearing one. Though priests are still entitled to such hats, they are rarely seen nowadays. Where you will see the image of a gallero yet is on some priestly heraldic and stationary. It is common practice for bishops to use it in such a way. The color of the hat and number of tassels is also changed/increased as you go up the ladder. In some places (such as Chicago) the tradition of hanging a cardinal’s gallero over the cathedral sanctuary after his death is still maintained (even if the cardinal never got one from the pope or wore one in his life).

Do priests have the option of how they would like to dress? Aside from mass and other specific ceremonies.
Sort of. Really, they are supposed to wear standard clerical garb of one sort or another. The cassock is certainly an option. But, in reality, there may be certain social pressures not to or if you are a member of a religious order, perhaps the superior would not assign or allow you a cassock. For ā€œpastoral reasonsā€ or some sort of practical concerns, a bishop might ask his priests not to wear one under normal circumstances. On the other hand, I once heard the story about a priest who asked for permission to NOT wear a cassock (when their order requires it as standard dress) for such things as the playing of sports and was denied.

I think Bing Crosby wore one too when he played a priest in movies. Do you know if there are occasions when these are to be worn, and if there are occasions when birettas are to be worn instead?

I know that birettas can be worn commonly with the everyday house cassocks that priests would wear commonly, as can zuchetti and cappeli romani. Furthermore, the biretta is worn with Mass vestments by all ranks of clergy in procession–at the beginning of Mass and the end. The zuchetto is only worn by bishops and above at Mass, but not during the Eucharistic prayers.

This may sound funny, but I always thought if I were going to be a priest I would be the priest with the roman collar, shorts, shades, and a baseball cap. The ā€œcool priestā€. 😃
The cool priest is the man who exemplifies the most holiness. šŸ™‚

I agree, but that doesn’t mean they can’t also look cool. I think it is completely possible to look cool AND be a model of reverence and holiness. Look at Fr. Stan Fortuna. He’s got the smokin’ shades and everything.

My parish priest always wears his collar. He may have jeans or khakis or shorts, but he always has his collar.

I live fairly close to the Fathers of Mercy who always wear their cassocks. fathersofmercy.com

They made quite an impression when they came to town en masse (and in cassocks) to see The Passion.

I should say!
I think the cassock look is entirely too shnazzy and all priests should wear them.
Course, I also think all priests should be able to sing like Bing Crosby and nuns should be like Ingrid Bergman in ā€œBells of St. Marysā€, but I am crazy like that 😃

At the seminary I attended, we all burned our ties as a part of the yearly tradition before we are ordained transitional deacons. From then on we never wear ties again, it’s always the Roman collar. Heck, I even wear it deer hunting!šŸ‘

Awsome!! I cant wait for my deer huntin’ lovin’ hubby to come home so he can see this pic!!! If you are transferred to Louisiana you’d probably have my hubby as a huntin’ buddy!! LOL

I like traditional clothing for priests. A nice black cassock, tight around the middle, with the white collar showing just above the black collar of the cassock.

For formal wear, the Ferraiuolo can be worn over the cassock

Sometimes we pay more attention to the look.

What do we think Jesus wore as He taught? Fancy colorful clothing with a nice hat? I missed the Chrism Mass this year, though remember the last one I attended and was surprised at the glimmer of some of the hats being worn by some of the senior priests. Almost looked like a costume party. As the Baptist taught us, He most increase, and we must decrease.
