Nah, you probably used the right word - I just never heard it before. Thanks,I may have spelled it wrong or even have the wrong wordIt is what is tied around the priestās waist in the first picture.
Why did some of the priests and bishops have the hats with the brims instead of birettas?Actually, the above picture of the Cardinal āall dressed upā shows His Eminence in Choir Dress, which is reserved for when a cleric is present at a liturgy but not performing any sort of liturgical duty (for example, when watching the Masses from the Vatican on EWTN, you will see the Cardinals and Bishops sitting in the congregation wearing the mozetta, rochet, and choir cassock, while the concelebrants (if there are any) are wearing full Mass vestments).
The appropriate attire for clerics when suit and tie are required, if the cleric choses to wear a cassock, is the ferruaiuolo. For more on this garment, see

The hats with brims are the traditional gallero hats. You might remember the character on Saturday Night Live āFr. Guido Sarducciā wearing one. Though priests are still entitled to such hats, they are rarely seen nowadays. Where you will see the image of a gallero yet is on some priestly heraldic and stationary. It is common practice for bishops to use it in such a way. The color of the hat and number of tassels is also changed/increased as you go up the ladder. In some places (such as Chicago) the tradition of hanging a cardinalās gallero over the cathedral sanctuary after his death is still maintained (even if the cardinal never got one from the pope or wore one in his life). Why did some of the priests and bishops have the hats with the brims instead of birettas?
Sort of. Really, they are supposed to wear standard clerical garb of one sort or another. The cassock is certainly an option. But, in reality, there may be certain social pressures not to or if you are a member of a religious order, perhaps the superior would not assign or allow you a cassock. For āpastoral reasonsā or some sort of practical concerns, a bishop might ask his priests not to wear one under normal circumstances. On the other hand, I once heard the story about a priest who asked for permission to NOT wear a cassock (when their order requires it as standard dress) for such things as the playing of sports and was denied.Do priests have the option of how they would like to dress? Aside from mass and other specific ceremonies.
I think Bing Crosby wore one too when he played a priest in movies. Do you know if there are occasions when these are to be worn, and if there are occasions when birettas are to be worn instead? The hats with brims are the traditional gallero hats. The cool priest is the man who exemplifies the most holiness. This may sound funny, but I always thought if I were going to be a priest I would be the priest with the roman collar, shorts, shades, and a baseball cap. The ācool priestā.![]()
I agree, but that doesnāt mean they canāt also look cool. I think it is completely possible to look cool AND be a model of reverence and holiness. Look at Fr. Stan Fortuna. Heās got the smokinā shades and everything. The cool priest is the man who exemplifies the most holiness.![]()
You mean this one:I agree, but that doesnāt mean they canāt also look cool. I think it is completely possible to look cool AND be a model of reverence and holiness. Look at Fr. Stan Fortuna. Heās got the smokinā shades and everything.
Yeah! See to me, Fr. Stan is a great example of mixing coolness with holiness. If I were to be a priest, I would want to be that kind of priest.
I should say!I live fairly close to the Fathers of Mercy who always wear their cassocks. fathersofmercy.com
They made quite an impression when they came to town en masse (and in cassocks) to see The Passion.
Awsome!! I cant wait for my deer huntinā lovinā hubby to come home so he can see this pic!!! If you are transferred to Louisiana youād probably have my hubby as a huntinā buddy!! LOLAt the seminary I attended, we all burned our ties as a part of the yearly tradition before we are ordained transitional deacons. From then on we never wear ties again, itās always the Roman collar. Heck, I even wear it deer hunting!

Oh tight around the middle would do absolutely nothing for my figure.I like traditional clothing for priests. A nice black cassock, tight around the middle,
Isnāt that what you will be wearing in ICCRS?I like traditional clothing for priests. A nice black cassock, tight around the middle, with the white collar showing just above the black collar of the cassock.
For formal wear, the Ferraiuolo can be worn over the cassock
