ONE priest said he learnt more about God from Alcoholics Anonymous meetings than the Catholic Church. Another compared the fervour of World Youth Day to the Hitler Youth.

Pretty meaningless survey. Two thirds of the priestdeclined to take part in the survey and in the end the author talked to exactly 50 priest out of the over 1500 he originally contacted. As is usual with self-selected surveys the naysayers are grossly overrepresented.
 
Being a ‘naysayer’ doesn’t necessitate your opinion being invalid.
 
While the study is worrisome, perhaps you should google “sampling error” before making too many decisions based upon these somewhat flawed results.
 
I used to think that I wasn’t learning anything…then one day I opened my eyes and discovered everything I wanted to know had been right in front of me the whole time, I only had to “knock on the door.” I’m not a priest, though.

Note: I’m not saying that there isn’t room for improvement
 
We can learn alot from GK Chesterton who tells us, “Statistics are inherently evil because they are slanted to the view point of the one taking the survey, statistics very rarely represent absolute fact.” or something to that effect, and needless to really say here, it’s the truth.

Thats a great quote and it should stand right next to Mark Twain’s “There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.”
 
I take this survey to mean that priests who disagree with the Catholic Church on morality, and who are opposed to World Youth Day, are becoming discouraged.

I think thats good news for the Church.

Is there a reason a Catholic can’t think World Youth Day is a bad idea without being a heretic?
 
These opinions seem overly representative of those who are unhappy, yes. In my early journey into the church, I am meeting deacons, priests, and lay people alike who are generally very very happy in the Church and therefore in life. If these priests are so unhappy, why are they still priests at all?
