Priests Who Fall In Love

True and understandable, but what some people don’t understand is that a priest is already married and anything else is adultery.
I’m talking about the priests themselves. Marriage to another human, while never perfect, does provide people with an outlet to fulfill their psycho-sexual yearnings. Priests, who are no less human than other men, have no such outlet in which they can effectively engage these parts of their nature, and it can do weird things to their psyche.

And a married man who would fall in love with a woman other than his?

And a single who would fall in love with a married woman?

And a single who would fall in love with a single woman who does not love him?

the question asked is not a problem specific to priests …
Not the best comparison. As far as single laity are concerned, there are always other fish in the pond, while a priest can never hope for that sort of intimacy,

Do you think that priests should be allowed to marry? Because this question is an aspect of the OP.

What?? Here you are on CAF and saying you don’t know the answer. I can’t believe such a comment. Unheard of. You must come back in 30 minutes with a very strong opinion, defending it until the bitter end.

And a married who fall in love ? he has another alternative? perhaps his spouse according to you?

“the spirit indeed is willing but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41

They are human. It happens. It happens to all of us.

Well, the spouse would be the only alternative, wouldn’t they?

Sometime it is said, that a wayward priest never truly had the priestly vocation to begin with. I think this is sometimes true. A vocation to the priesthood is a supernatural calling. It is not something one decides to pursue.

In this case, a priest who falls in love has only to be satisfied with his wife who is the Church or Christ as the case may be! the problem is solved no?

Not really. You can’t have sex with the Church.

However, I think it’s important to remember that married couples often face not-so-different challenges, such as loneliness, sexual frustration, and temptations to marital infidelity.
Amen to that.
There are times when you can be terribly lonely even in a reasonably good relationship.
Priests who joined the priesthood at a young age might not have a frame of reference to know that, any more than they have the emotional intelligence to know that telling Girlfriend A you’ve been seeing Girlfriend B is going to create a drama storm.

St. Hedwig. She wears a crown and carries a little church in her arms. I’ve since seen other statues of her with the crown and little church.

I was intrigued to see that this happened with one of the priests in the article and that they were stunned it went so badly when it was so obvious that it would end in disaster. But you are right. It likely has to do with a lack of emotional intelligence that is gained with relationships over time. Some priests who join the priesthood very early without any relationship experience are stunted psycho-sexually, and that also can cause issues. Another good reason why men are encouraged to date in the seminary.

I agree. The Seminary is like going steady with someone. You’re free to back out if you discern it’s not for you, but it would be wrong to see someone else simultaneously.

Maybe it’s different from seminary to seminary? I have a friend in one and he’s not allowed to date.

Yes. Dating in the seminary is allowed and even encouraged. Though it’s not universally common. Most men don’t date.

However, dating might be one of the most under-rated and important things one could do when discerning the priesthood. You need to know whether you want to be “father” or “father”.

Also, I should mention that the “dating is allowed” data I have only comes from three US seminaries. It’s possible there are others who don’t allow it, but it would not be wise in my opinion.

Could you provide references that say dating is allowed at these 3 seminaries you speak of?

Edit: I don’t know either way myself. Intuitively, my tendency is towards, no, they can’t date, but I could easily be wrong there. Matter of fact, I heard a story about a parish priest that I know fairly well that says he was dating two girls simultaneously while in seminary. 🙂
