An interesting perspective:
Why does everyone assume that the royal baby born last week will one day become King? It seems most unlikely to me that the British Monarchy will last that long.

I am a keen monarchist myself and am sorry that an institution I love and revere is dying. But there is no point in pretending things are better than they are.

What actually holds it up? All the major parties long ago drove the hereditary nobles from the House of Lords. They implicitly accepted that inheritance didn’t entitle anyone to any office. It is only a matter of time before that logic takes its final step.

Nobody but me stands up for inheritance – though there’d be no private property or liberty without it – or challenges the idea that the rigged, corrupt and closed system we humorously call ‘democracy’ is the best possible way to choose our rulers.

Hardly anyone believes in the Christian God any more – though a growing number believe in Allah – so that means they also cannot believe the Monarch is divinely chosen.

We all know that the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats are crammed with republicans who are waiting for the chance to get rid of the Crown. They circle round the royal finances in the hope of working up a public demand to impoverish and humiliate the Monarch.

The Tories, who pretend to be monarchists, would cheerfully guillotine the Queen or Prince Charles if they thought it would help them stay in office. They prove each week that there is nothing they won’t swallow, with this aim in mind.

I never wrote that. I was quoting another post.

And here I am just sitting wondering if Mike will get a divorce or if Rachel in suits will die?

Oh wait. They never married. Okay maybe she will just “move on”. I don’t know. I just hope she will not be in some bad car crash and that’s how it ends for her…

I still don’t understand why some people think the monarchy is dying. Sure, there are cut-throat politicians who would do anything to save their jobs, But the Queen, I’ve read, has made preparations for her own funeral and Charles taking the throne. And Charles will do the same for William and William for George. Most Britons love the Royals. Go to any YouTube or site featuring them and it will be filled with comments, most positive, especially for the Queen. She is a likable woman as was her mother. People seem to be crazy about William and Kate, too. I have a friend, James, who is a butler to Charles and Camilla, and adores both of them. They seem to treat him wonderfully. I think the monarchy is fully entrenched in the UK.

Maybe Mike and Rachel will marry and move somewhere else. Or they will both die in a plane crash. I heard he wanted to leave the show, so maybe this is his out…

Phil you got me on annulment. It amounts to the same thing. No, wait a minute. The Pope denied him. Catherine went bye-bye w/o Popes approval.
It may be a moot point. She’s gone. Henry left church and started CofE. Ann had her time in History. Gave us Elizabeth I, and list her head. B/C Henry fell in love w Jane Seymour.

Dear Constant Learner,
There are a lot of ppl who intensely, dislike Camilla. Me included. Charles will be in jeopardy b/c of Camilla.,
God bless our enemies.
There was a time the Queen was bypassing Charles to William.,
That would be good, in my humble American opinion.

The Queen knows her oldest son has prepared his entire life to be King. She also knows William does not want to be King and has said he thinks he’d be terrible at the job. I don’t believe it’s crossed the Queen’s mind for a second not to make Charles her heir. She has even said he will use the name George when one ascends the throne.

I don’t think thr British dislike Camilla as much as Americans do, and Americans don’t count in this case. Camilla won’t harm Charles and his reign one bit. I adore Camilla, and I adored Diana, too. Charles should have been allowed to marry Camilla in the beginning. Diana might be living and happy now. She didn’t care for royal life, even though she was a minor royal before marrying. Both William and Harry have expressed a high regard for their stepmother as well as great love for their late mother.

I’m still left with the question: How is the monarchy dying? It looks pretty vibrant and “here to stay” to me.

I have heard the poll numbers for Charles and Camilla are not that good.
Or maybe it was just for Charles, I can’t remember. The British public still remember Diana and some feel she was treated unfairly. It will certainly be a sad day when the
Queen and Phillip pass away.

It’s always sad when people pass away because we - and others - miss them. But it’s a glorious day for them. They get to enter eternity!

I have heard the poll numbers for Charles and Camilla are not that good.
That time has passed, thankfully:

Polls suggest that people are warming to the idea of Camilla as their queen. In 2005, only 7 percent thought she should be queen, according to a YouGov poll. Fast forward to a 2015 YouGov poll and 53 percent of the public thought she should be queen consort, with 32 percent saying she should be given a lesser title out of sensitivity to Diana.

Public perception continued to improve as Camilla was lauded for being a positive force not only for Charles, but also for Prince William and Prince Harry.

“She is a fantastic stepmother to the boys, she knows when to be quiet, when to stand down, and how to be a great royal support as well,” said fashion retailer Louise Aiken.

The princes have always expressed their royal seal of approval for their stepmother.

“She is a wonderful woman and she’s made our father very very happy, which is the most important thing,” Harry said in a 2005 interview before Charles and Camilla got married. “William and I love her to bits.”

I am not sure I would call her a national treasurer. She and Charles were both guilty
of adultery, but so was Diana.

Yes, Diana was committing adultery, too. I liked her, felt she was very compassionate and caring, but I also like and understand Charles and Camilla, as much as an outsider can. I’m happy they are finally married and happy.

Diana’s death was quite tragic - she was so young and a mother - but it was due to getting in a car with a very drunk driver, plain and simple. That doesn’t make it any less tragic. I wish she could have gone on and found real love with someone else. Hers is one of those life plans only God can understand.

Diana was not quite the innocent victim she hoped many would see her as. Due to her
childhood, I think she was deeply troubled and insecure. I think she was enamored of
Prince Charles in the beginning, but the age difference was too great. I feel Charles robbed her of her youth and used her to some extent. She had a lot of growing up to do and had both boys quite young. She was definitely one to manipulate the press to her
advantage. I wish Camilla could have denied herself to Charles. He was a married man.
She should have discouraged him. I can understand Diana’s frustration when she claimed there were 3 of them in the marriage and it was a bit crowded. Charles has
always struck me as wimpish. I think Camilla gives him the affection and attention he
never got from his Mother. A tragic story all the way around. I don’t think Charles will be
a good king.

i don’t wish to comment negatively on “english royalty” any more than i’ve already done

the entire concept of “royalty” to me seems to be ancient, stupid & anti-american

we don’t need multi-millionaires on the public dole
