2 Peter 1:20
“Yet always you must remember this, that no prophecy in scripture is the subject of private interpretation.”

Doesn’t this actually forbid the private/personal interpretation of the whole scriptures?

👍
Especially when you read it along with:

2Thes 2:15 - Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.

And

1Tim 3:15 - But if I should be delayed, you should know how to behave in the household of God, which is the church (ekklēsia) of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth

2Peter1 continues
21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

So, We need to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit for our interpretation.

Indeed! The Holy Spirit works through the Church to guide us on the path to God through Christ. 👍

This doesn’t say anything about a church.

So you take one verse to base you entire belief on?

I wouldn’t think so. Is it not true that Catholics have room for personal interpretation of things not dogmatically/doctrinally defined by the Church?

No, What I pointed out in response to your post “Indeed! The Holy Spirit works through the Church to guide us on the path to God through Christ.”, was that there is no mention of a church in 2Peter1:20, 21

20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
2Thes 2:15 - Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.
The oral statements and epistles spoken of here were given by (name removed by moderator)iration to Paul (an individual) not to “the church” and this tradition and letters talk of the same thing.

1Cor.2
1And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
1Tim 3:15 - But if I should be delayed, you should know how to behave in the household of God, which is the church (ekklēsia) of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth
Pillars and foundations are things that hold things up and that is what this is saying that the churches function is to hold up the truth of Christ that has been given to individuals through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name - he will teach you everything and remind you of all that (I) told you. -John 14:26,
Jesus is talking to His disciples here, individuals, who were soon to split up and go into the world. Again not a church.

I was not saying that verse stated such. Just a general comment is all. 😉

Paul’s letters were given to Paul? Paul’s letters and the Tradition passed down from the Apostles were given to the faithful. The letters were written to Churches.

The Church does uphold the Truth that was Given by Christ. No disagreement here. 👍

They were establishing a “Church” 🤷

I was not talking about beleif systems at all.

Paul did write his letters to churches, however they were written by Paul, an individual, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

But the Spirit would be sent to individuals. Thats my point. God does not inspire churches. He inspires individuals.

Fair enough
Paul did write his letters to churches, however they were written by Paul, an individual, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Yes that is correct. Paul was a member of the Church that Christ established on earth. He was inspired by God to spread the Gospel to those who did not believe and to right the wrongs of those that did. Corinth was a problem child lol
But the Spirit would be sent to individuals. Thats my point. God does not inspire churches. He inspires individuals.
No problems here. God does inspire those in the Church to uphold the teachings on Christ and the Apostles.

The problem with private or personal interpretation is that how do you know you are correct in your interpretation? How are you sure that you are being inspired by the Holy Spirit?

If you align yourself with what is inspired, the bible, ther is no problem.
Very true! Also with the Church Christ established as well and the Sacred Traditions that the Apostles handed down! 👍

Remnant…Private interpretation is not based on your way of looking at things, but being in the Church instituted by Christ through the apostles and realizing the epistles of the New Testament are addressing emerging churches.

Tradition is how the faith of the apostles was put into practice and lived out – as Church.

God never called us to be part of divisions or factions, or to think that our personal way we perceive as Holy Spirit is to conflict with others who believe in Christ, and to go on to condemn.

We need the Holy Spirit with those authorized and ordained by the Lord to properly teach us Scripture, esp. in the times we live in.

The Lord did not leave us as remnant, just a few chosen souls. He does say many are called but few are chosen, but only the Lord can judge, and we who have the position to judge others must do so mercifully.

We are always to test the spirit. And we have a long tradition of communal discernment. We do not follow break away or 1800 self proclaim prophets. Be very leery of those teachers who condemn that what they do not understand, or make you feel you are better than other Christians, or base your faith on trumped charges of self-righteousness.

We have nothing to brag about, but find our righteousness in grace alone of Jesus Christ.

In heaven, there will be many surprises. There will even be popes and other Catholics up there.

Really? That totally contradicts the fact thousands of denominations exist and all claiming:

We are aligned with the Bible.

Well if one aligns what is inspired, the bible, and there is no problem, then why the need to create thousands of different denominations, sects, etc?

Evidently not all align accordingly-eh?

Remnant…how would know what inspired and what is not? what will be you basis for determining what is inspired and what is not?

And who would decide what is truth and what is not? The individual? the church?

Remnant…Private interpretation is not based on your way of looking at things,
That’s exactly what it is.
but being in the Church instituted by Christ through the apostles and realizing the epistles of the New Testament are addressing emerging churches.
I agree, but the churches are not inspired the individuals writing the letters are.
Tradition is how the faith of the apostles was put into practice and lived out – as Church.
Don’t you mean faith of Jesus?

Galatians 3:22
But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

How do you know this.

God’s remnant church is clearly defined in scripture.

Revelation 12:17
17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 14:12
12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
We are always to test the spirit. And we have a long tradition of communal discernment.
I’m not familiar with this term. What does it mean?
