Last December the Catholic Worker House in Des Moines, Iowa, had a woman priest say mass. Women cannot be priests in the Catholic Church, and she has been automatically excommunicated for simulating a sacrament. The local bishop then ordered them not to have mass at their place again “for the time being.” When representatives of this organization just met with the bishop, in a cordial meeting they say, they said that they disagree with Church teachings in this and other things. This center has also said the same female priest is coming back, though apparently they have not said if she will be giving another fake mass. The bishop has said the suspension of mass there remains in effect.

Why do they refer to her as Rev. Janice Sevre-Duszynska? My understanding is that the RCC still holds that women can’t be priests. If they can’t be priests, how is she a Reverend?

It wasn’t the Church calling her “Reverend;” it was the Des Moines Register. The media often takes the position that the ordinations are valid but the “rules” of the Church won’t let these women into active ministry. That’s why you will see things like “Reverend” or statements that a women was ordained when actually she simply attended a simulated ordination ceremony. 🤷

or this
Roman Catholic canon law dictates only men may become ordained priests and give the sacramental rite of communion or perform liturgy services.
Wrong on so many levels.

“The reverend was ordained by the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests, an independent group not recognized by the Vatican.”

And Servant of God Dorothy Day is probably rolling in her grave. Seriously, how do so many organizations founded by devout Catholics (in full communion with Rome - and with the permission from their local ordinaries and later the Vatican) become so secularized?

I’ll bet it wasn’t a Latin Mass.

]had a woman priest say mass. …ordered them not to have mass at their place again
There was no “mass” the first time, as a woman cannot sacramentally represent the sacrifice of the bridegroom. It is an impossibility and objections to the Church’s teaching inevitably fail to confront the theology of a sacrament and the natural resemblance they require. Usually arguments against the Church on this matter appeal not to theological arguments, but 21st century social arguments about a world where “women can pursue whatever career in all other aspects of life” or some such.

I just don’t understand why they would call themselves Catholics if they don’t agree with the teachings of the Catholic Church? Why not simply join an organization whose rules are in line with their beliefs? 🤷

Because if they just go off and be priests in another religion they lose their own sense of importance.

Brain washed activism needs a constant opponent so they can immerse themselves in a constant struggle against people they define as the enemy.

I agree, 😦

Hearing of people doing things like this, I just want to go up and say “What are you doing?” :ehh: Why did they join the Catholic Church in the first place? and do they care at all for what Christ thinks?

Very upsetting to hear of people tearing at the Catholic Church all the time, Christ’s truth is a dictatorship, not a democracy. It’s not swayed by public opinion or a majority vote. The truth is the truth even if none believe it and a lie is a lie even if everyone believes it.

I hope this has helped

Thanx for the heads up, the things people do
to try to change the NATURAL order of things!!
It is surely AGAINST nature to have a woman
priest, just as it is to have a homosexual relation-
ship!!

The group is no longer allowed to have Mass at its location, even with a validly ordained priest. The Bishop gets to decide where Mass can be said and he is saying “no” to this location. Presumably, the “fake” Masses with the pretend-priest were not the only services held there.

When a Bishop gives permission for a Mass to be said in a location other than a Church, he is expressing a measure of trust that it will be celebrated correctly. The Catholic Worker House betrayed that trust. 😦

Letter to the Bishop which made him aware of the problems…

Many. many problems.

Perhaps the Bishop would consider withdrawing any support for the house, and declaring it not to be associated with the Catholic Church.
Thank you Itrust, very good letter, I’m also not surprised that there are many other abuses going on and if this is what we are seeing I shudder to imagine what we are not seeing. 😦

I think Bishops need to come down firm with a solid ‘no’ for those who depart in such ways from the true faith. I thought the letter to the Bishop which made him aware of the problems was very good and I’m glad something is being down about it, at least to warn the faithful to stay away from this group.

I hope this has helped

The thing is, it’s this particular Catholic Worker House. And, though I’m sure there are other Catholic Worker Houses with similar problems, I’d be shocked if it’s the majority (or even a large minority) of Catholic Worker Houses. As I said before, Dorothy Day must be rolling in her grave, just as St. Ignatius Loyola must be crying in Heaven with regard to the direction of many Jesuit universities in the US (even though most Jesuits - including our Holy Father - are extremely faithful to the teachings of the Church).

Thank you, that’s encouraging. At least there are still many who are faithful to Christ and the truth, who do not have itching ears trying to change it to suit their own likings as described in 2 Timothy 4.

Perhaps they joined because like most Catholics they feel the Catholic Church is the “true” Church on Earth but they also disagree with some of the Church’s rules and are hoping to change the “true” church from the inside? They can’t do that as members of other faith groups. And yes it is the Church’s current “truth”, but perhaps they believe that it’s “truth” that can be reinterpreted or altered. 🤷

I agree, but what’s upsetting, is trying to change it from the inside will destroy it. It’s not the ‘truth’ if it changes to whatever is going at the time, especially to things like same sex marriage, abortion etc which we have always opposed and have always been contrary to the teachings of Christ. But nevertheless, I trust in Christ and no matter how bad it gets I know He will look after and guide His Church. I trust in the foundations, founded by Christ on St Peter, the rock. The One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
