I would like to see a time when there are no abortions performed because all babies are wanted and healthy. Unfortunately, today not all babies are healthy or wanted.

So that leaves a quandry. Do you immediately outlaw abortion and hope that the lack of legal medical intervention changes society views so that fewer people are having unwanted pregnancies or do you keep abortion legal for the time being and work on other methods to reduce unwanted pregnancies through better sex education, birth control methods, etc until there are no unwanted pregnancies at which time you can revisit outlawing abortion because it’s ‘need’ isn’t as strong. Same with healthy babies. Do you outlaw abortions and hope/pray that all babies are healthy and if an unhealthy baby is born start, at that moment, the process of deciding for natural death or intervention, or do you keep abortion legal until such a time that the scientific community has come up with ‘fixes’ to ‘problems’ such as the Trich-18 genetic malformation (I don’t think I spelled that exactly right). Note: I’m usuing generic terms for ‘fixes’ and ‘problems’ because I realize that this is a touchy subject, especially for parents with children whom society considers not normal. But who’s to say what’s normal?! Just using this topic for discussion.

This is the problem I have. Do I want abortions? No. But does making abortion immediately illegal have the long-term affect of reducing abortions over the alternative of keeping abortion legal for a little longer to allow for changes in society. I don’t know. And that’s what I struggle with.
How about if you take your argument and substitute some other heinous action by the members of our society such as incest, pedophilia, etc. Do you believe that the fact that these are illegal decrease the incidence of them occuring? Could you see how making them a choice to be3 had by those so inlined could increase the incidence of them occuring?

Belagarion:

You offer us this: " . . .the infallible Church has spoken. It decides when abortions are necessary, and its only when the mother and child are threatened. (OR even just the mother, I believe)"

Not only does this not sound infallible, it sounds half-baked. Do *you * believe abortion could be a necessity only when the mother and child are threatened? Or do you believe that abortion might be a necessity when just the mother’s life may be threated?

I’m not asking for what the “infallible Church” has handed down. I’m asking what you think.

Thank you.

marietta
Hmm…Let me think…

I agree with the Church, of course.

For quite a few reasons though.
  1. Because I KNOW the Church to be the one True Church founded by Jesus Christ (Who I literally KNOW the be God. I’m sure you’ll find my forensic evidence for this somewhere one the forums)
  2. Because scientific logic states that an individual’s life starts at conception. It states that at 8 weeks, the child is not only developed enough to be considered ALIVE, it developed enough to feel pain, and to actually look human.
  3. Natural Law (Logic) states that killing another human (which an unborn is) is wrong. (Unjustly killing I should add. Self defense is fine, though saddening that it had to come to that)
Church teachings, and scientific logic go hand-in-hand.
You cannot give me one argument that I could not refute.🙂

**Holy Spirit, PLEASE come into the hearts of those here who think it is ok for any reason to murder the most innocent among us for any reason:gopray2:

All I ask of anyone reading this is that they pray about this issue. You need not be Catholic. You need not even be sure that there is a God. You just need to open your heart and mind to allow Him to work within you. What can you lose?

None of us can be sure that we are right 100% of the time. Even in issues of faith and morals I am open to different opinions and perspectives and try to sincerely pray that I am on the right path. The day I think I know it all and no longer have any use for a higher authority is the day I doom my soul…

Why won’t my wish of no unwanted pregnancies/unwanted babies never come true? Isn’t that part of the goal of outlawing abortion?

No The goal of outlawing abortion is stop the slaughter of the innocents. Being “unwanted” is such a subjective term it could be used to jusify killing anyone on the face of the earth.

You’re right. Making something illegal doesn’t necessarily reduce the number of occurances of the illegal activity. That’s why I see that the immediately outlaw of abortion won’t get the end result that I want. Sure, it will significantly reduce the number of abortions performed in the immediate aftermath of the restructuring of the law but what about years down the road? Won’t people have simply turned to other illegal means to have these performed? That’s why I think more than just making abortion illegal is necessary to stop abortions. Society needs adjustment as well. So will it work better/faster if society adjusts prior to making abortion illegal or afterwards? I don’t know. Erring on the side of society adjusting after-the fact is the better course of action for unborn children, sure, but in the mean-time (while abortion is still legal) what are we doing to change society?

Oh, my dear, my dear.
Do you realize that you’ve changed YOUR terms.
You’d said Unwanted and UNHEALTHY.
Check it out.

In either case, says who?
Man is not and will never be God.

Good point. Unwanted is a very subjective term that has caused problems in the past (extreme example is unwanted Jews being killed by the Nazis). But couldn’t a part of outlawing abortion be to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies that were caused from pre-marital sex? If so, what’s the best way to ‘combat’ this problem? What can we, as a society, do to reduce this number? That’s what I’m getting at with wanting to reduce this number through societal changes during a time when abortion is still legal.

You’re right. I did originally say unwanted/unhealthy and then mistyped in the next post. It should have said “Why won’t my wish of no unwanted pregnancies/unhealthy babies never come true?”

That’s an interesting point you bring up. God is, and should be, the decider of life, yet I believe that God also created man with an intelligent brain fit for medical learning and advancement. So at what point does medical advancement start to incroach upon God’s power? By this I mean, there are babies that are created with heart problems such as a heart with a hole in it. Medical knowledge has gotten us to the point that we can surgically go into the heart of an unborn baby and fix the heart problem. (So cool!) But we also have medical interventions, ventilators, that keep people alive longer than perhaps God intended. So where do we draw the line against medical intervention and no medical intervention? To stay on topic, do we continue genetic testing (not talking about stem cells) to get rid of the Trich-18 disease I talked about earlier or consider that a trial from God for a purpose we don’t yet understand?

If you want to help cut down on the number of abortions while it is still legal go volunteer at you local CPC(like many of us in this thread have). Make sure you representatitves know you will not vote for them is they support abortion on demand and above all never fall ino the trap of ever justifying or rationalizing any abortion.

You’re considering crossing several lines that designate absolute morality - that separate us from beasts (animals). Getting rid of the runt(s) of litter is something I witnessed first hand when I had to serve as a lab tech and care for a colony of white mice one summer. If the “mothers” had too many offspring, they ate the smallest (as in, why waste the protein?)

Re “To stay on topic, do we continue genetic testing (not talking about stem cells) to get rid of the Trich-18 disease I talked about earlier or consider that a trial from God for a purpose we don’t yet understand?” … God allows MANY things that we can’t possibly understand, natural disasters and weather-generated famine, for starters… As to medical intervention, all of us are allowed to say NO to medical intervention for ourselves - but NOT for others.

 i don’t think what your asking is wrong.i too think the same as you.Say for example you have a married couple. They already have three kids. The mom is pregnant with her fourth child. The first 3 pregnancies were normal, however, there is a serious problem with this one.The woman could even lose her life if it continues.
The doctors say that abortion is the only way to save the lady.So after much agonizing, they the couple decide to go through with this after talking to various doctors and specialists.
Do I think they are bad people,no.Why,because they already have three children who need their mother in their lives, especially if the kids are under the age of 14 or 15. They gave it a great deal of thought, and they were concerned about their other kids and the impact her death especially on very young ones would have.
It was a very hard choice to make.

This is different from where you have some woman who has sex with various men and is too lazy to use birth control and resorts to abortion to get rid of a baby she is not capable or willing to raise.
I think some of this has to do with how sex was explained to these women by their mothers growing up. They equate the use of birthcontrol with “bad girls”,so don’t use any.
I at 53 could find someone to have sex with, but choose not to because I want it to be with someone I care about, not to be used and abused like some old chew toy, like some women.
Plus when I was much younger I wanted to be a nun,and I never dated in highschool, wasn’t interested in it anyhow.Took care of both my parents in their later years due to their health problems.

Both women and MEN need to take resposiblity for their sexuality. If they did, then there would be no reason for abortions in this country. If they practiced absitanace or if they choose to have sex, they would use birthcontrol.
While many Catholics condem people who use artifical birth control,I donot.A woman who uses the pill or better the implant is being cautious and might be less likely to get an abortion perhasp, because she wants to have a child with the right partner at the right time.
Forms of birthcontrol like condoms are ancient and so is abortion too,you will never get rid of either as long as people continue to have sex.
It is only when people learn to control their urges and respect one another instead of using each other for some personal gain will we maybe be free of both abortion and bc.
Maybe people should be sterlized so to speak at birth or very young. Then when they get older and get married and show proof
of a marriage license the procedure could be reversed so they could have children.Of course this smacks of Big Brother and government control, but it would be the only way to stop abortion.

I’m not suggesting getting rid of the runts of the liter. I’m saying, in response to the answer posed above about not knowing God’s reasons for doing things, i.e., allowing for unhealthy children, when do we take our medical knowledge and change what God has given? For example, God created a child born with a clef lip. Our medical knowledge allowed us to learn how and eventually succeed at fixing this clef lip. So at what point do we draw the line where we say we’ll modify what God has done and we won’t modify what God has done? I guess this is a slightly rhetorical question as no difinitive answer could be set, but if we could use our medical technology to learn from and eventually be able to succeed at removing some genetic malformities (that are currently a reason why some women are chosing to abort), shouldn’t we?
… God allows MANY things that we can’t possibly understand, natural disasters and weather-generated famine, for starters… As to medical intervention, all of us are allowed to say NO to medical intervention for ourselves - but NOT for others
But don’t we make medical intervention decisions for others now? We choose to put premies on ventilators to try to save their lives and we take people off ventilators to let them die? What am I misunderstanding? I do agree that God allows many things that we cannot possible understand. But working through possible answers is sometimes helpful.

I think the ‘problem’ I have is that I’ve seen some women who have desperately wanted a child find out that their baby has developed with a major genetic malformity and the agony they’ve gone through when presented with the option to abort. I know many posters here have mentioned seeing woman abort with what appears to be no guilt, and I’ve seen that as well. So I see the agony and I see the apparent lack of guilt and I don’t think I see things as black and white as other posters do.

Truthfully, I haven’t come across a situation where I’ve had to make a firm stance. By that I mean I personally have never been pregnant so I don’t know what it would be like to not want my own baby, in voting most of the candidates I’ve been able to chose from don’t have a firm one way or the other stance for me to go with, and other than the occasional debate among friends I haven’t had to state a stance one way or the other. So this thread is helpful to explore the issue without actually making any life altering decisions that I couldn’t go back from.

**A someone who has been pregnant and is now raising a two year old I can appreciate how incredible difficult that situation would be. But having been pregnant and having a fierce love for my baby from the moment I knew of her existence, killing another one, for whatever reason, could never ever be an option for me. Just as I could not consent to the murder of my two year old. My child is my child is my child. I would never murder any child, inside of me or out, sick or healthy, doomed to death or destined for a long and healthy life.

With medical advances and technology where it is at I would have to guess that there are not many situations where a woman would find herself choosing between her unborn child and certain death of herself. Possible death, sure, but we cannot know the future. Even people diagnosed with terminal cancer can experience miracles:shrug:**

In preparation for working at the Right to Life booth tomorrow at our 4th of July parade, I have made a sign which says:

Terrorists have killed
over 4000 American
troops since the
beginning of the
war in Iraq.

Abortionists have
murdered over 4000
American babies
since yesterday.

For our friends who vociferously share their disagreement with the war, but promote/support/accept abortion. Just wanted to share.

There's no question that the only ones who gain immeasurably from abortion are those who pick up a paycheck for their involvement for providing and/or supporting the "procedure."

Aborted women don't gain; they've lost a child and an opportunity of growing into life as a caring and more selfless adult. The fathers don't gain. Some of them never even heard there was a pregnancy. Grandparents don't gain; they've lost the best promise for their own joyful futures. Siblings don't gain; they learn (eventually) that Mama killed my baby brother or sister - and Mama could have killed me too. (My mama?!!) Society doesn't gain; when any life is de-valued, all life is de-valued. However, staff who offer abortions do experience financial gain.

It's a business and it yields financial profits.

Some folks, even other women, won’t accept the fact that to you, to me, to many others, the absolute of life itself is the central absolute! Yes, killing a 2 yr-old is the same as killing a pre-term baby or a 6 wk-old fetus

The difference between one child and another is only related to the size and age of victim.

Plenty of us know these factoids. They’ve been around since pre-nternet days.

If you knew a woman who was pregnant and she had 8 kids already…of which 3 of them were deaf, 2 were blind and 1 was mentally retarded…and she had syphilis, would you recommend that she should have an abortion?

*If you answered “yes”, then you would have killed *

HMMMMM… you were gonna drive that pregnant mama to the abortuary?
