This is talking about the creation of Adam from the earth, not babies that are created in the usual way. It in no way implies that the ability to breathe is what makes a person a person.Genesis 2:7 — then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul
Yes and Douey Rheims says “breathed into his face”, not breathed into his nostrils, so you can tell the subsequent translations were bending over backwards to try and twist this to make it more about biological maturity rather than spiritual breath like what you correctly stated.Genesis 2:7 — then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul
What this actually says is that life begins with the infusion of the soul into the body, which happens at conception.
So, in fact, it says nothing at all about birth, and the “breath” at which life begins in this narrative is not man’s breath but God’s. Indeed, Gen. 2 concerns Adam and Eve, who were not “born” but formed from the slime of the earth, and animated by the breath of God.And the Lord God formed man of the slime of the earth: and breathed into his face the breath of life, and man became a living soul.
